1. Software onto your hard drive as follows Windows 95 98 NT 2000 ME XP 1 Insert the Dragon Drop IR CD into your CD ROM drive If your drive has been set for auto run a Xantech Welcome menu will appear If not access your CD ROM drive with Windows Explorer and double click on the autorun exe file 2002 Xantech Corporation Page 4 Model IRS232A 2 On the Welcome menu click Install DD460 Software If upgrading from a previous version of Dragon Drop IR 460 select REPAIR from the install menu This will add and replace all appropriate files while keeping existing projects and palette files un touched Follow the on screen instructions as the program installs It takes approximately one to three minutes to complete depending on the speed of your machine NOTE For the convenience of the installer the Dragon Drop IR CD ROM contains a complete set of Application Notes the Xantech Product Catalog Factory Learned IR Codes web site browsers and important notes Read the Very Important Notes first click on the desired menu item and follow the on screen instructions STARTING DRAGON DROP IR Windows 95 98 NT 2000 ME XP 1 Installation creates a shortcut on the desktop Double click on the Drag460 Shortcut or 2 From START menu choose Programs 3 Select XANTECH from the list and click on the DRAG460 Icon 4 The program loads and opens to the Xantech Dragon Drop IR programming screen SERIAL PORT SELEC
2. e E f f E i ow KE 2 e ls Eh E E E E e s e Lala el El E b b E Els 2h h le b 2 E E b Figure 2 IRS232 Base Unit and RS232 Command Editor Windows With the system operating and DRAGON DROP IR software open proceed as follows 1 Choose NEW PROJECT CTL N from the File menu or choose OPEN PROJECT CTL O to modify an existing project file 2 Inthe New Project window type a file name such as joneshome and click SAVE The proper file extension is added automatically 3 From the Base Unit menu select IRS232 4 A graphic window IRS232 with 36 buttons and an RS 232 Command Editor window appears Figure 2 VERIFYING COM PORT COMMUNICATION WHO AM FIRMWARE VERSION VERIFICATION Before continuing it is recommended to verify proper COM PORT communication between the PC and the IRS232A By checking the unit s firmware version and verifying a response from the IRS232A you will confirm proper communication and may continue 1 To check firmware version simply click on the Base Unit menu and select Who Am I 2 This should return a version number as shown in figure 3 below Dragon Drop 460 E Received 0040 0000 0000 Figure 3 Who Am Firmware Verification 2002 Xantech Corporation Page 6 Model IRS232A NOTE If a message is returned stating Unable to Determine Base Unit this could be due to one o

AN RC68 PROGRAMMER OPTIONAL When multiple IRS232A units will be used together in the same IR Zone each unit will need to be on a separate Code Group to enable each unit to be addressed individually The code group can either be changed via software during a BASE UNIT TRANSFER as mentioned in the previous section or manually To change manually proceed as follows 1 2 3 4 5 With an IR sensor connected to IR IN GND and 12VDC on the IRS232A as shown in Figure 1 set the Code Group switches on the rear of the RC68 to FF Press the button on the RC68 of the Code Group to be used for control Use the screened characters on the buttons for reference e g 10 Hold the button for a few seconds and look for confirming talkback on IR receiver Change Code Group switch on the rear of the RC68 to the new code group setting 10 Create and transfer a project in DRAGON DROP IR for the IRS232A Using the RC68 test IRS232A for response to the new Code Group ASSOCIATING IR TRIGGER COMMANDS WITH ASCII STRINGS 1 2 Select a button in the IRS232 window It will be highlighted in a blue outline Refer to Fig 5 In the RS 232 Command Editor window place the cursor in the box under the column labeled 01 Type the ASCII text command to be sent If only the HEX code is known simply place the cursor in the row labeled HEX and enter the command NOTE The maximum number of characters in a string is 100 Rep

Any of these methods is adequate for confirming proper operation of the IRS232A Two of these methods can be done before the actual project is transferred to the unit utilizing TEST mode in the Dragon Drop IR software NOTE Test Mode in Dragon Drop IR is only available in Model IRS232A Method 1 Testing RS232 Command Strings Through Dragon Drop IR Directly to the RS232 Component 1 2 3 4 Leave the IRS232A connected as during programming i e PC Comport connected to COM PORT on IRS232A and RS232 Out connected to the unit to be controlled See Figure 1 Click the button labeled TEST in the IRS232 Window The button should now be outlined in RED Click on a button to test in the IRS232 window The green RS232 OUTPUT LED should flash indicating the IRS232A has issued a command string and the unit being controlled should respond appropriately to the command being sent Repeat Steps 4 amp 5 for each string to be tested To terminate TEST mode simply click on TEST in the IRS232 window The RED outline should now disappear 2002 Xantech Corporation Model IRS232A Page 9 Method 2 Testing RS232 Commands Through Dragon Drop IR to PC Screen NOTE This requires either 2 PC s or a PC with two COM Ports A communication program such as Hyper terminal is also required This is an advanced testing method and can be used as a trouble shooting tool if the Method 1 test did not control the unit appropriately This will allow you to

Transferring a Project to the IRS232A A PC running a communication program such as Hyper terminal is also required You will also need a remote programmed with the proper RC68 commands 1 Connect an IR source IR sensor and remote or a keypad to the IR input of the IRS232A as in Figure 1 2 Connect the IRS232A s RS232 OUT to the PC COM Port 3 On the PC connected to the RS232 OUT of the IRS232A open the RS232 Communication software and configure for the proper communication settings 4 With a handheld remote or keypad programmed with the proper RC68 send the IR trigger commands to the IRS232A 5 The green RS232 OUTPUT LED should flash indicating the IRS232A has issued a command string and the ASCII command string should be displayed in the RS232 Communication software screen 6 Make changes to the ASCII text as needed in Dragon and transfer the project again 7 Repeat steps 4 6 until all command strings are verified TRANSFERRING A PROJECT TO THE IRS232A 1 Be sure the IRS232A is connected to the PC as in Figure 1 2 From the File menu select Base Unit Transfer Ctrl B A Project Down Load window appears with the statement Synching Please Wait then Transmitting Please Wait 3 A transfer status bar is shown as the transmission of data progresses The green RS232 OUTPUT LED on the IRS232A blinks until the transfer completes 4 Using the same procedure you may transfer to any number of additional Controllers NOTE If

7. visually confirm the IRS232A is outputting the correct command string 1 Connect the IRS232A as shown in Figure 1 but connect the RS232 OUT via a Null Modem cable to either another PC s COM Port or to another COM Port on the PC running Dragon Drop IR 2 On the PC connected to the RS232 OUT of the IRS232A open the RS232 Communication software and configure for the proper communication settings NOTE If you are using the same PC you should now have 2 programs running Dragon Drop IR and the RS232 Communication software Arrange the two programs so both windows are visible simultaneously 3 Click the button labeled TEST in the IRS232 Window The button should now be outlined in RED 4 Click on a button to test in the IRS232 window 5 The green RS232 OUTPUT LED should flash indicating the IRS232A has issued a command string and the ASCII command string should be displayed in the RS232 Communication software screen 6 Make changes to the ASCII text as needed in Dragon 7 Repeat Steps 4 amp 5 for each string to be tested 8 To terminate TEST mode simply click on TEST in the IRS232 window The RED outline should now disappear Method 3 Testing RS232 Commands via IR Remote to PC Screen NOTE This is an advanced testing method that can also be used as a trouble shooting tool to visually verify the correct command string is being sent by the IRS232A The project created will need to be transferred to the IRS232A Please see

EACHING RC68 COMMANDS TO A HAND HELD CONTROLLER OR KEYPAD FROM DRAGON DROP IR When using DRAGON DROP IR with a PCIR RC68 IR Trigger Commands can be generated from Dragon to teach to the intended controller The following cannot be done in an IRS232A project window 1 Open a new project in Dragon 2 Select a Base Unit other than an IRS232 e g 590 10 3 From the Palette Menu choose SELECT RC68 COMMAND PALETTE a virtual RC68 will appear 4 Select a switch location on the virtual 590 10 It will outline in blue 5 Click the appropriate button on the RC68 The command will appear in the Command List Repeat for all IR codes needed 6 Press the TEST button on the virtual 590 10 It will outline in red Stay in TEST mode for steps 6 7 7 With an IR emitter connected to IR OUTPUT on the PCIR and attached to the learning eye of the device to be programmed one by one click on the switches of the 590 10 The PCIR will output the RC68 IR codes 8 Teach the appropriate IR commands to the remote keypad or controller to be used to control the IRS232A SAVING AND BACKING UP FILES AUTOMATIC SAVE When working on a project in Dragon it is automatically saved on a continuous basis It is OK to quit a project at any time and come back to it for further work by simply clicking on Open Project Ctrl O from the File menu and double clicking the filename in the list SAVE PROJECT AS To create a variation of a proje

12. ater date drag amp drop them back into the Appropriate SmartPad or Palette folder on the main hard drive NOTE To avoid the potential loss of work back up files frequently TROUBLE SHOOTING 1 Communication Problems between PC COM Port and IRS232A Performing Base Unit Who Am returns message stating Unable to Determine Base Unit a Check cable connection between the IRS232A and the PC This cable should be a straight through DB9 Male Female cable wired pin to pin b Check your PC for any conflicts with your COM Port c Verify proper COM Port settings under PREFERENCES hit F2 in the Dragon Drop IR software 2 Problems communicating with Device After the proper RC68 IR trigger is sent to the IRS232A the Green RS232 Out LED blinks but does not control the device a Check for proper cable connection from IRS232A to device The device should be plugged into the RS232 OUT connector on the IRS232A b Check to see if device being controlled needs a Null Modem cable for proper hand shaking communication between the two units c Test the output of the IRS232A for proper command string Please see TESTING COMMANDS FROM THE IRS232A Use test Method 3 2002 Xantech Corporation Page 12 Model IRS232A 3 Problems communicating with the Device After the proper RC68 IR trigger is sent to the IRS232A the Green RS232 Out LED does not blink and doesn t control the device a The IR receiver is not transmitting the
13. ct without having to re program everything from scratch i e Change Jones project to Smith project 1 Click SAVE PROJECT AS Ctrl S from the File menu 2 SINGLE CLICK on the project file name to Save As 3 Type in the new Project File Name e g Smith and click OK 4 If there are no changes to the system type of sources brand of sources zone configuration etc transfer the project If there are any changes to be made modify the new project and then transfer to the IRS232A 2002 Xantech Corporation Model IRS232A Page 11 BACKING UP PROJECT FILES It is always wise to backup all project files to another hard drive floppy disc or other storage media It is recommended that each project be saved to a floppy disc and kept with each client s job files To make backup copies proceed as follows 1 Open the hard drive icon from My Computer usually drive C in Win 95 98 NT 2000 XP Open the DRAG460 beta folder then the Projects folder 2 Locate project files The files in the Projects folder will have an pja pjb pjc extensions All three must be copied 3 Open a window for the backup drive and make a Projects folder for that drive 4 Select and drag the files to be backed up that are in the Projects folder on the main hard drive and drop them into the Projects folder in the backup drive NOTE 1 Project files can be relatively large requiring up to 1 MB of space or more depending on the complexity of your

16. f the following 1 The unit is the original IRS232 non Advanced unit This does not support the Who Am feature 2 There is a problem communicating with the device Please see the TROUBLE SHOOTING section CONFIGURING THE IRS232A You will need to configure the IRS232A unit for the proper IR code group setting and for proper RS232 communication Please consult the manufactures manual for the product to be controlled for the proper RS232 settings i e Baud Rate Stop Bits and Data bits before continuing 1 Click the OPTions button located in the top left of the IRS232 window This will open the Base Options Window Here you can configure the IRS232 unit for proper Code Group Baud Rate Stop Bits and Data Bits See Figure 4 2 Confirm proper Code Group setting The default code group for RC68 IR codes for the IRS232A is 38 NOTE Changing the code group will allow control of multiple IRS232 units e g having one IRS232 unit set to code group 38 and another set to code group 10 will allow both units to operate independently within the same IR Zone When changing code groups be sure the new setting does not interfere with the default code group setting of another Xantech product in use within the same zone Code group changes can also be changed manually using an RC68 programmer Please see the sectioned titled Changing the Code Group Manually With an RC68 for instructions 3 Confirm proper RS232 transmission

18. programming the previous version IRS232 module non ADVANCED version DRAGON DROP IR version 1 04 and higher will transfer all commands to unit during programming with the exception of any advanced parameter options i e Baud Rates outside of 9600 STOP Bits other then 1 and DATA Bits other then 8 A message will appear indicating these features will be excluded as seen in Figure 6 2002 Xantech Corporation Page 10 Model IRS232A Dragon Drop 460 The current IRS232 module does not support ADVANCED FEATURES Such features will be excluded from the download Figure 6 Message when programming previous non advanced IRS232 unit NOTE If project does not transfer check connections as shown in Figure 1 and Com Port connection in Preferences Try Base Unit Transfer again Project should transfer TEACHING RC68 COMMANDS TO A HAND HELD CONTROLLER OR KEYPAD FROM AN RC68 To now operate the IRS232A you must use an IR Controller to issue the IR trigger commands If you are not using a DRAGON DROP IR programmable controller or keypad URC 2 SMARTPAD3 etc you will need to EH the device with Xantech RC68 IR Trigger Commands Using an RC68 Programmer set the code group switches on the back of the programmer to 38 or whatever the code group was changed to 2 Place overlay J over the RC68 keys 3 Teach the appropriate IR commands to the remote keypad or controller to be used to control the IRS232A T
19. project When backing up to 1 44 MB floppies you may need one floppy for each Project NOTE 2 The file sizes can be reduced dramatically if needed by using a good file compression program such as Win Zip USING BACKUP FILES To use back up files at a later date copy them back to the Projects folder located under the DRAG460 directory after un Zipping them if previously Zipped Proceed as follows 1 Locate the Projects folder on the main and backup drives 2 On the backup drive open the Projects folder and identify the files needed with the proper extensions Un Zip them if previously Zipped 3 Click and drag these files from the backup drive and drop them into the Projects folder on the main hard drive BACKING UP SMARTPAD AND PALETTE FILES The SmartPad and Palette folders in the DRAG460 directory contain all the files of learned individual IR commands and specific palettes that have created for all projects These should be backed up in the event of a hard drive failure for transferring work to another computer etc Back up these files to another hard drive a tape drive or a floppy Proceed as follows 1 Open the hard drive icon from My Computer usually drive C in Win 95 98 NT 2000 XP Open the Drag460 folder 2 Locate the SmartPad and Pallets folders 3 Click and drag copy the SmartPad and Pallets folders to the backup drive These files are small enough to easily fit on one 1 44 MB floppy 4 To use them at a l
