13. 1 SYMBOLS AND CONVENTIONS USED IN THIS MANUAL A number of symbols and conventions are used throughout this manual to help you better understand AVSS procedures They are as follows Convention INPUT CAPS LOCK SHIFT ENTER DEL or DELETE BACKSPACE or lt CTRL x gt BOLD CAPITALS SMALL CAPITALS lt DEFAULT gt AVSS term Description Any specific key or series of keystrokes that you enter See Tables 2 1 2 2 and 2 3 The upper case lock key When it is on all alphabetic characters will be capitalized Be sure that it is on before using AVSS This key is used to select the symbols associated with the upper row of number keys for example the g key It must be depressed and held down when used Using it with the g key will result in the character The Enter or Carriage Return Key The Delete Key used to correct mistakes on DEC compatible terminals and computers The Backspace Key used to correct mistakes on IBM compatible terminals and computers The CTRL key pressed at the same time as an alphabetic key see Table 2 4 For example CTRL C indicates pressing the C key while holding down the CTRL key The circumflex or up arrow obtained by holding down the SHIFT key while pressing the g key The AVSS prompt indicator Indicates your key entry responses Indicates the AVSS response to you A data value already entered by you or by AVSS

101. t is usually problems with telecommunications 4 1 TELECOMMUNICATIONS Most current AVSS sites utilize a central computer connected to remote user terminals by means of electronic communication lines If you are using one of the newer AVSS implementations on a personal computer or if you are connected directly to the central computer this section will probably not apply If you are at a remote site and experience difficulty you should determine the symptoms and follow some easy remedies to attempt to solve the problem yourself If these fail then you should contact staff at the central site to see if the computer is running in normal state The following symptoms and remedies may apply SYMPTOM AVSS does not respond when you try to get a PASSWORD prompt 1 Refer to your notes on the proper procedures to obtain a PASSWORD prompt Usually it is obtained by an ENTER for DEC computers and a CTRL C for IBM computers Continue pressing one of these until AVSS responds 2 If AVSS does not respond use the CTRL Q UNFREEZE command one or more times then attempt to obtain a PASSWORD again following the procedure in 1 above 3 If AVSS still does not respond then make sure all the equipment cables are properly connected and of course that all your equipment is turned on Turn off the display terminal pause for several seconds then turn the power back on Next check any indicator lights that show you are connected to the central co
