17. ide to Air Conditioning System Diagnosis A with all diagnostic procedures one should always have an open mind when confronted with a non operational air conditioning system With power train diagnostics the customer s observation and comments can prove to be invaluable This is less so when it comes to air conditioning In some cases customers report that the system is working but is not as cold as it used to be Investigation then shows that the system has no refrigerant gas at all or a drive belt for the compressor is missing The following diagnostic procedure works well for automotive air conditioning systems Although it is desirable to carry out a visual inspection to familiarise yourself with the various individual components of the A C system in many instances this may prove impractical due to the integration of the A C system in the vehicle s engine bay Something those who have worked on a Peugeot 807 are more than well aware of Refrigerant Identification A refrigerant identifier is a desirable piece of equipment for A C diagnostics Pressure Testing The next job utilises the most unused function of the A C service station the pressure gauges At this stage it is probably unnecessary to have our machine connected to a main supply It is vital that before connecting the service station to the vehicle that the gauges are reading zero Failure to do so may lead the operator to believe the system is pressur
18. ised when it may have a leak A zero pressure indication suggests the system has a leak and an OFN pressure test is required The system must hold 10 bar for 30 minutes with no loss of pressure before it can be recharged If there is a pressure of 4 to 5 bar on the high and low side gauges this is the resting pressure of the system with the engine off It is likely the system is sound It does not indicate the amount of refrigerant in the systems The author has seen pressure of this magnitude on a Volvo 940 with just 90 grams of gas Clutch Cycling Compressor Check Next check for compressor output Start the engine and switch on the A C On systems with a clutch cycling type compressor a clunk will be heard when the clutch is engaged Fairly quickly the low pressure gauges should give a reading of 2 bar and the high pressure gauge 10 bar This indicates a refrigerant temperature of 2 C in the evaporator and good cooling 3 bar indicates a refrigerant temperature of 9 C and poor cooling These are the normal operating pressures of a system with at least 65 of its refrigerant content If the system has low gas the low side gauge gives a reading below 2 bar At about 1 to 1 25 bar the low pressure switch is activated and disengages the compressor clutch No audible clunk confirmed by no reading on the pressure gauges requires diagnosis If possible run the vehicle s own diagnostic system to run the compressor clutch te

31. st If this is not possible then there is an alternative Most compressors are earthed through their casing so if 12 volts positive is supplied to the compressor clutch with the engine amp ignition off it should audibly engage If it does not and the engine earth is good then it suggests the compressor clutch may be at fault If the clutch does engage then the issue may be with the 12 volt supply to the compressor Check the obvious items like the fuse amp relays An outside air temperature sensor that shows 1 C could stop the compressor clutch from engaging If the compressor is heard to engage but there is no output on the low or high pressure gauges check to make sure that the centre shaft of the compressor is rotating If it is this is an almost conclusive sign of compressor failure Even with a small amount of gas there should be some output from the compressor Ambient Temperature All the pressure readings in this article are related to an ambient air temperature of approximately 20 C Noting the ambient temperature is very important and failure to do so can lead to wasted valuable time A real life example demonstrates this A vehicle air conditioning compressor would engage and disengage about every 20 seconds The garage had known this car for some time and were adamant It was not normal Further investigation showed that the compressor was disengaging as it reached 1 3 bar on the low side quite
