13. with 10 turnovers per minute T for various impeller diameters Impeller diameter 2 5 cm 1inch 20 3 cm 8 inches Impeller speed required 122 000 rom From this analysis it is obvious that an impeller type mixer must be of a sufficiently large diameter in order for the speed to be reasonable This is why it is not possible to use a small impeller or magnetic stir bar in a bag containing more than say 5 liters WAVE Mixer 20 50 User Manual 28 9538 66 AC 41 A Technical reference A 1 WAVE Mixer theory of operation 42 A pumparound loop A pumparound loop is often used for mixing closed systems such as bags These systems have the advantage that they are completely sealed However the mixing efficiency of this configuration is very poor This is because it is very difficult to move large quantities of liquid rapidly through the pumparound loop Typically peristaltic pumps are used These are restricted to fairly small diameter tubing and flowrates are usually below 10 Lpm Higher flow rates are difficult because suction causes the bag to collapse around the inlet to the loop choking off the flow With a liquid volume of 100 liters and a pumparound rate of 10 Lpm you only get 0 1 turnovers per minute requiring a mixing time in excess of 50 minutes Furthermore the liquid velocity in the bag is very low in this setup making It difficult to suspend particles or crystals The WAVE Mixer The WAVE Mixer uses wave motion to m
