5. 69 TECHNICAL amp CONSUMER INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION Serial Number Location FRAME SERIAL NUMBER Record the frame serial number and date purchased in the spaces below You will need this information when ordering parts and when making technical or warranty inquiries Frame serial number Date purchased 70 TECHNICAL amp CONSUMER INFORMATION Carburetor Modification for High Altitude Operation At high altitude the standard carburetor air fuel mixture will be too rich Performance will decrease and fuel consumption will increase A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was certified for extended periods of time may increase emissions High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications to the carburetor If you always operate your generator at altitudes above 5 000 feet 1 500 meters have your authorized Honda servicing dealer perform this carburetor modification This engine when operated at high altitude with the carburetor modifications for high altitude use will meet each emission standard throughout its useful life Even with carburetor modification engine horsepower will decrease about 3 5 for each 1 000 foot 300 meter increase in altitude The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetor modification

OPERATION Pull the starter grip lightly until STARTER GRIP you feel resistance then pull briskly in the direction of the arrow as shown Lf NOTICE Do not allow the starter grip to snap back against the generator Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter Direction to pull If the choke knob was moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine gradually push it to the OPEN position as the engine warms up If you wish to use the Eco Throttle system turn the Eco Throttle switch to the ON position after the engine has warmed up for 2 or 3 minutes 25 OPERATION STOPPING THE ENGINE To stop the engine in an emergency simply turn the engine switch to the OFF position Under normal conditions use the following procedure 1 Turn off or disconnect all appliances that are connected to the generator or the parallel operation kit 2 Turn the engine switch to the OFF position ENGINE SWITCH 3 Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position FUEL VALVE LEVER 4 If two generators were connected for parallel operation disconnect the parallel operation kit receptacle assembly after stopping the engines if you do not wish to resume parallel operation 26 OPERATION AC OPERATION Before connecting an appliance to the generator make sure that it is in good working order and that its electrical rating does not exceed that of the generator Most motorized appliances require

SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR 6 Visually inspect the spark plug Replace it if the electrodes are worn or if the insulator is cracked chipped or fouled 7 Measure the spark plug electrode gap with a wire type feeler gauge Correct the gap if necessary by carefully bending the side electrode The gap should be 0 028 0 031 in 0 7 0 8 mm SIDE ELECTRODE 0 028 0 031 in 0 7 0 8 mm SEALING WASHER 8 Check that the spark plug sealing washer is in good condition and thread the spark plug in by hand to prevent cross threading 9 After the spark plug is seated tighten with a spark plug wrench to compress the washer If installing a new spark plug tighten 1 2 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer If reinstalling a used spark plug tighten 1 8 1 4 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer NOTICE A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head 10 Reinstall the spark plug inspection cover and tighten the cover screw 11 Close and latch the left side maintenance cover 50 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed If the engine has been running the muffler will be very hot Allow the muffler to cool before servicing the spark arrester Clean the spark arrester as follows 1

The fuel valve must be in the ON position for the engine to run After stopping the engine turn the fuel valve to the OFF position FUEL VALVE LEVER Choke Knob CHOKE KNOB The choke is used to provide proper starting mixture when the engine is cold be opened and closed by operating the choke knob manually Move the choke knob to the closed position to enrich the mixture for cold starting CLOSED a 14 CONTROLS amp FEATURES Eco Throttle Switch The Eco Throttle system automatically reduces engine speed when loads are turned off or disconnected When appliances are turned on or reconnected the engine returns to the proper speed to power the electrical load If high electrical loads are connected simultaneously turn the Eco Throttle switch to the OFF position to reduce voltage changes ON Recommended to minimize fuel consumption and further reduce noise levels when less than a full load is applied to the generator OFF Eco Throttle system does not operate Generator operates at full speed ECO THROTTLE SWITCH Parallel Operation Outlets These outlets are used for connecting two EU3000is generators for parallel operation A Honda approved parallel operation cable kit optional equipment is required for parallel operation This kit can be purchased from an authorized Honda generator dealer PARALLEL OPERATION OUTLETS 15 CONTROLS amp FEATURES AC Circuit Prot

UPPER MUFFLER PROTECTOR OIL FILLER NECK RUBBER DRIP 4 GUARD REAR COVER OIL DRAIN NECK When installing the rear cover carefully fit the rubber drip guard around the oil filler neck and oil drain neck 53 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR SEDIMENT CUP CLEANING The sediment cup prevents dirt or water that may be in the fuel tank from entering the carburetor If the engine has not been run for along time the sediment cup should be cleaned 1 Turn the engine switch to the OFF position 2 Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position 3 Use a screwdriver to loosen the latch and open the left side maintenance cover 4 Remove the air cleaner cover and paper air filter 5 Disconnect the breather hose from the air cleaner base 6 Remove the 6 mm bolt and two 6 mm nuts and remove the air cleaner base BREATHER HOSE AIR CLEANER BASE 6 mm BOLT 6 mm NUTS 54 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR 7 Unscrew the sediment cup AWARNING Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel Stop the engine and keep heat sparks and flame away e Handle fuel only outdoors Wipe up spills immediately 8 Clean the sediment cup O ring and filter in non flammable or high flash point solvent 9 Reinstall the filter O ring and sediment cup 10 Turn the fuel valve ON and check for leaks 11 Reinstall the air cleaner base and connec

See the Maintenance Schedule on page 41 84 INITIAL USE INSTRUCTIONS ENGINE OIL The generator is shipped WITHOUT OIL in the engine 1 Place the generator on a level surface 2 Open the oil maintenance cover 3 Remove the oil filler cap 4 Add enough SAE 10W 30 API service category SJ or later or equivalent oil to bring the oil level to the upper limit of the oil filler neck SAE 10W 30 oil is recommended for general use for additional recommendations see page46 Do not overfill the engine with oil If the engine is overfilled the excess oil may be transferred to the air cleaner housing and air filter 5 Screw in the oil filler cap dipstick securely 6 Close and latch the oil maintenance cover DIPSTICK UPPER LIMIT OIL FILLER CAP OIL MAINTENANCE COVER 85 INITIAL USE INSTRUCTIONS FUEL Add fuel to the generator in a well ventilated area Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes may reach flames or sparks Keep gasoline away from appliance pilot lights barbecues electric appliances power tools etc Spilled fuel is not only a fire hazard it causes environmental damage Wipe up spills immediately This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher Refer to 42 for additional fuel recommendations AWARNING Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fu

19. 0 10 20 30 40 C AMBIENT TEMPERATURE The SAE oil viscosity and service category are in the API label on the oil container Honda recommends that you use API service category SJ or later or equivalent oil 46 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR AIR CLEANER SERVICE 1 Use a screwdriver to loosen the latch and open the left side maintenance cover CLIPS AIR CLEANER cov 2 Unsnap the air cleaner cover clips and remove the air cleaner cover 3 Check the foam air filter and paper air filter to be sure they are clean and in good condition If the foam air filter is dirty clean it as described on page 48 If the paper air filter is dirty replace it with new one Do not clean the paper air filter 4 Reinstall the air cleaner cover 5 Close and latch the left side maintenance cover NOTICE AIR CLEANER COVER Operating the engine without an air filter PAPER AIR FILTER or with a damaged air filter will allow dirt to enter the engine causing rapid engine wear This type of damage is not covered by the Distributor s Limited Warranty 47 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR FOAM AIR FILTER CLEANING A dirty foam air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor reducing engine performance If you operate the generator in very dusty areas clean the foam air filter more frequently than specified in the Maintenance Schedule 1 Wash the foam air filter in a solution of household det
20. 4 FRONT COVER 6 mm CAP NUTS 2 Remove the battery holder band 3 Remove the negative cable from the battery negative terminal and then remove the positive cable from the battery positive terminal BATTERY HOLDER BAND NEGATIVE CABLE POSITIVE CABLE BATTERY RUBBER 4 Remove the battery and the battery rubber from the battery tray 57 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR Battery Charging The battery is rated at 8 6 Ah ampere hours Charging current should equal 10 of the battery s ampere hour rating A battery charger should be used that can be adjusted to deliver 0 9 amps 1 Connect the battery charger following the manufacturer s instructions AWARNING The battery will expel explosive hydrogen gas when overcharged A spark or flame can cause the battery to explode with enough force to kill or seriously hurt you Always use a regulated charger that provides the correct charging current to prevent overcharging Wear protective clothing and a face shield or have a skilled mechanic perform the battery maintenance 2 Charge the battery 3 4 hours 3 Clean the outside of the battery and the battery tray compartment with a solution of baking soda and water 58 SERVICING YOUR GENERATOR Battery Installation 1 Install the battery in the generator 2 Connect the battery positive cable to the battery positive terminal first and tighten the bolt

Altering Tampering with or altering the emission control system may increase emissions beyond the legal limit Among those acts that constitute tampering are Removal or alteration of any part of intake fuel or exhaust systems e Altering or defeating the governor linkage or speed adjusting mechanism to cause the engine to operate outside its design parameters 72 TECHNICAL amp CONSUMER INFORMATION Problems That May Affect Emissions If you are aware of any of the following symptoms have your engine inspected and repaired by your authorized Honda servicing dealer e Hard starting or stalling after starting e Rough idle Misfiring or backfiring under load e Afterburning backfiring e Black exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption Replacement Parts The emission control systems on your new Honda engine were designed built and certified to conform with applicable emission regulations We recommend the use of Honda Genuine parts whenever you have maintenance done These original design replacement parts are manufactured to the same standards as the original parts so you can be confident of their performance The use of replacement parts that are not of the original design and quality may impair the effectiveness of your emission control system A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility that the part will not adversely affect emission performance The manufacturer or rebuilder of the part mu

Your safety is your responsibility A little time spent in preparation will significantly reduce your risk of injury Knowledge Read and understand this manual Know what the controls do and how to operate them Familiarize yourself with the generator and its operation before you begin using it Know how to quickly shut off the generator in case of an emergency If the generator is being used to power appliances be sure that they do not exceed the generator s load rating 22 82 IS YOUR GENERATOR READY GO For your safety and to maximize the service life of your equipment it is very important to take a few moments before you operate the generator to check its condition Be sure to take care of any problem you find or have your servicing dealer correct it before you operate the generator AWARNING Improperly maintaining this generator or failing to correct a problem before operation could cause a malfunction in which you could be seriously injured Always perform a pre operation inspection before each operation and correct any problem 19 BEFORE OPERATION To prevent a possible fire keep the generator at least 3 feet 1 meter away from building walls and other equipment during operation Do not place flammable objects close to the engine Before beginning your pre operation checks be sure the generator is on a level surface and the engine switch is in the OFF position Check the Engine Check
