Lebanon High School 1 1 Learning Initiative FAQ s What is 1 1 Learning Blended learning involves student learning at least in part at a supervised brick and mortar location away from the home and at least in part through online delivery with some element of student control over time place path and or pace Blended learning courses include a mix of three kinds of instruction e presentation of material through lecture text visuals animation e active learning where the individual student researches information solves problems takes quizzes manipulates digital artifacts engages in drills simulations or games and e interactive learning where students collaborate with other students and instructor s We like to refer to it as anytime anywhere learning This 24 7 learning initiative will enhance personalized learning opportunities Teachers have been working all year on learning about technology that can enhance their curriculum and instructional strategies Transitioning from a textbook driven curriculum to a digital curriculum will take some more time however these computers will be used as the learning environments are transformed Students will be able to use real life real time resources and information Students who have their own computer have proven to be more engaged in the learning process thus increasing student achievement Productivity increases engagement improves and 21st Century skills are enhanced with students havi
7. eir textbook Will students have an email account Yes All students will be issued a school email account that they can use for school related purposes only This will facilitate communication between teachers and students Students will also use My Big Campus to communicate and collaborate with their teachers Why did LCSC adopt a 1 1 computer program at Lebanon High School This is a necessary step towards LCSC students becoming successful in the 21st Century Our classrooms are changing from a textbook curriculum to a digital curriculum and with access to a computer students have instant access to information that they may need Classrooms will spend more time on creating and analyzing instead of knowledge and comprehension How will parents help with homework if they re not proficient with the laptop Parents will get some brief training on the laptop during distribution day Students are encouraged to work with their parents to show them their work online Do I have to tell my insurance company I have it in case it s stolen It is recommended that insurance be purchased however that is left up to each individual family In the event of a claim LCSC does not directly work with the student and his her family s insurance company under any circumstance LCSC expects to receive payment from the student and his her family and will pursue collection of the fees accordingly It is the responsibility of the parent to file claims wit
8. en home for usage It can also be used at LHS before and after school and at any place where they can use the computer It is important to note that all computer usage whether at school or away from school is filtered and monitored by LCSC How will the students be trained to use the MacBook Air Students will get a brief training on distribution day More in depth training will take place during the first few days of school The AppleCare Center will also be open during the school day to answer questions that students might have Is it safe for my child to use the computer LHS will be working with teachers and students teaching digital citizenship and responsibility Students will understand human cultural and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior The Children s Internet Protection Act CIPA and the LCSC computer policies prohibit student access to inappropriate materials on the Internet restriction of access to material deemed harmful unlawful online activities unlawful disclosure use or distribution of personal information and will monitor student use Parents and guardians should also take proactive steps to ensure the safe use of the computer Students will not be able to install any software programs etc The Internet is filtered through the LCSC server to keep the students from visiting inappropriate websites even when they are at home Will student keep the same computer as they progr
9. ess through each grade Students will receive the same computer the following year It is important for the student to keep the computer in good condition because they will be using the same computer throughout their high school career Students are not permitted to personalize the exterior of their computer It is expected to stay in the same condition as it was provided to them Will I still have to pay for a textbook The only textbook fees that will be paid for are ones that involve a class not solely taught by LHS such as dual credit classes with Indiana University and Purdue University Consumable fees will also be paid for such as novels PE clothing and food labs to name a few The technology fee will replace the prior textbook fees There will still be the same auxiliary fees that have existed previously such as dual credit fees and consumable fees The fees that each student pays will be consistent with what they would have paid when we charged for textbooks as opposed to a computer Is Wi Fi or any Internet connection necessary at home It is not required but it is recommended Internet access will allow the student to connect to the classroom using My Big Campus Our 2013 survey showed that more than 85 of students have consistent and reliable Internet access at home Those who do not have access at home can use the Wi Fi at Lebanon High School before and or after school Many places in the community offer free Wi Fi access as well

17. ng their own device 24 7 Saying all of this computers are only on resource in the classroom The primary resource will still be the teacher When do the students get to use the MacBook Air Students will be using the MacBook Air Laptop Computer throughout the school day under the discretion of their classroom teacher The laptop will be taken home with the student to continue their educational tasks Distribution will take place in early August and computers will be collected at the end of the school year The same computer will be distributed to the student the following year Students on a track for a certified diploma will not take home a computer How much will it cost Textbook rental fees are going to be replaced by this technology fee Textbook rental fees average close to 160 year for each student at Lebanon High School Some of the Dual Credit courses with Indiana University and Purdue University have textbooks that are much more expensive A technology fee of 160 year will be charged to students in place of the textbook fee The consumable fees and other non textbook fees will remain the same so the total book supply fee required of students should be consistent with prior years Each student s fees will be unique based on the courses they select But the overall fee will be very similar to what it would have been without 1 1 When do I have to pay Payments are due at the time of billing similar to previous years Bills will
18. r Usage A All student athletes must refrain from bringing their computer to any practice game or athletic event Computers should be locked up in a locker or stored safely at home No computer is to be left in the bleachers a car a bus the sidelines of a competition or practice in a locker room not locked up in a locker If a coach grants permission to work on homework at a practice home or away athletic event student athletes need to make a conscious effort to prepare to complete their assignments without the use of their computer Exception A coach has the discretion to request require a student athlete bring their computer to an athletic event for the purpose of instruction Example film use If this occurs the coach will make arrangements for the student athlete to safely store their computer in a locked secure area A Student Athlete who does not follow A and B will maintain full responsibility for a lost stolen or damaged computer School lockers are available to students both before and after practice games meets etc Monday through Friday when school is in session
