36. le discusses performance and cost per page issues when printing primarily black only pages with the HP Color LaserJet 4600 series printer The HP Color LaserJet 4600 printer has four print cartridges cyan magenta yellow and black After printing approximately 8 000 pages at 5 percent coverage with a cyan yellow or magenta cartridge the printer will prompt you to replace that cartridge The color print cartridges may need to be replaced more often than customers expect based on the number of color pages printed This happens because the life of each toner cartridge is dependent not only on toner but also on a photoconductive drum and developer that can wear during the printing process even when not printing with a particular color To conserve the color cartridges the HP Color LaserJet 4600 employs a mechanism for partially disengaging color cartridges from the printing process in order to prevent wear of the color photoconductive drums and developers during black only printing It takes up to six seconds to disengage or engage the color cartridges The printer uses this mechanism judiciously not only for performance reasons but because disengaging and engaging the cartridges can also affect the life of the drums and developers Getting the print engine ready for printing and then bringing it to idle cycling up and cycling down adds more weor especially if the color cartridges are fully engaged when the printer cycles down
