22. ires here Always use a Spark plug socket to minimize the chance of cracking the plugs insulators Timing Belt Your vehicle has a timing belt be sure to change the belt at recommended interval A broken belt can stop your car in its tracks and you will need to have it towed to where you can have it replaced or do it yourself Stock Miata engines valves are such that they will not hit any other moving parts when the belt breaks which is nice Under the car items O2 Sensor The oxygen sensor monitors emissions and tells the vehicle s computer how to adjust the air fuel ratio Over time the sensor s sniffers become clogged with carbon which produces faulty readings Swapping out the oxygen sensor is similar to changing a spark plug Buying an ex act match sensor one with OE style plug makes the job easier than when using the wire your own style Fuel Filter Most of us hate tasting and wearing gasoline so chang ing the fuel filter puts it way down the to do list To mini mize the mess release the fuel pressure from the system following the service manual s recommendation Discon necting the battery is recommended keep smokers well away pop the old filter loose catch seeping gas in a cof fee can or other suitable container and install the new filter A small touch of oil helps to keep from tearing the o rings making reinstallation easier Next Month Changing Sway bars on a NC UPCOMI NG EVENTS Limata licio J
23. mainte nance are needed to give you the improved fuel econ omy longer engine life and cleaner air However many of us procrastinate until the first signs of car trouble or later We ll give you some basic upkeep maintenance here check your owner s manual for more detailed infor mation Under the Hood items Hoses Radiator hoses fall into the do it yourself replacement category Inspect hoses for chafed areas softness which can indicate interior deterioration hardness which keeps clamps from sealing and swells When replacing radiator hoses begin by draining the cooling system capturing the antifreeze so pets don t drink it and poison themselves or let it pollute our ocean and rivers Refill the radiator and overflow tank with the recom mended mix of antifreeze and water then burp the cooling system according to the service manual s proce dure Heater hoses can be replaced the same way Belts All Miata s NA amp NB use a dual belt and the NC s use a serpentine belt system Tension must be adequate for each belt The drawback is that a broken belt will disable half or all your vehicle accessories This should be moti vation enough to regularly inspect the belt for missing ribs and frayed plies A belt routing diagram is usually included somewhere under the hood Air Filter Paper style air filter elements should be replaced when found dirty or clogged Simply remove the old element www socalm org Janua

28. ry 2008 The Reward official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club and replace it with the new one Also make sure that the new filter is properly seated in the housing Some mem bers like the K amp N cleanable filters And some after mar ket Hi Flow filters Foam So it is up to you to choose PCV The positive crankcase ventilation PCV valve filters gas ses emitted by the engine and then returns them to the valve cover If it does not rattle when you shake it re place it Do not clean it as the spring does loose its ten sion EGR The exhaust gas recirculation EGR valve uses exhaust to reduce cylinder temperature which in turn reduces nitrogen emissions Some Miata s need the small path in the intake cleaned once in a while if it gets clogged Cap amp Rotor Solid state electronic ignition systems have made did dling with breaker points and setting dwell obsolete To a Miata owner a cap is something you wear and a rotor is what helps stop your car Plugs amp Wires Plug wires that have external cracks should be replaced Faulty wires will also show visible sparks in the dark with the engine running This is one of the weak points OEM parts seem to have on a Miata and last about 30 000 Miles Regardless of whether the wires will be replaced or not only remove one wire at a time Also the thicker the plug wire the less likelihood of crossfire among them Miata s come with 7 0mm wires We like 8 0mm w
29. sent in from Pat and Lee Ruecker GREAT PARTY By Bari Russell Mum and I appeared at NBTC a few minutes past 6 00 and all but four guests were there with beverages in hand It was amazing Now that have chilled after all the excitement It s time to thank the 47 members that reserved for our first out of the cozy home into a cozy club Holiday Party At first was disappointed with a final count of 45 last minute Dean and Tassy were unable to attend but it was perfect for our first attempt It was difficult to finding a place that didn t have outra geous fees tried places more central to no avail Fi nally Kathie McClelland found Newport Beach Tennis Club and Bob Davis found Baci s in Huntington Beach A Small group of us were to do the process of elimination so we booked appointments and went tasting Of course both places were excellent the main issue was parking and set up Thus NBTC won out Thanks Kathie it was a great venue even to their decora tions Sorry you couldn t be there to see the end result you should have come for that drink Thanks also to the Board for voting to have the treasury cover some of the costs My being gone for all of November made it difficult so A special thanks to Bob for collecting checks and keeping me up to date Then there is my hero Bud who after un reasonable pressure from me stepped up to the plate and helped with the gift exchange really owe him as all he wanted to
