4. Central Ohio Radio Club Newsletter Letters to Corky Dear Corky How come people say my brand new shiny Chinese 52 handheld radio is barely readable on the repeater I am able to hear all the repeaters just fine I hear many stations on the repeaters that have nice strong clear signals Am I holding the radio with the wrong hand or what D J Reynoldsburg Dear D J Contrary to popular belief handheld radios really don t care which hand you hold them in They all do suffer from several issues Here are a couple the factory equipped rubber duck attenuator and having just a few watts or milliwatts of output power Combine these two issues and unless you are within a mile or two of a repeater receiver your signal will be less than desirable If there is a storm in the area this is even more of a problem There is even more bad news Use it in a vehicle a stucco home an aluminum sided home or a metal roofed home you should expect to use it for receiving only There are some ways to overcome these issues First use an external real antenna outside of your vehicle or home The second is to get a small RF amplifier and boost your signal to 25 30 watts If you really want to have a nice strong signal and overcome storm desense get a mobile radio with 30 50 watts of RF power You won t have stations asking you to repeat yourself several times Please understand handhelds have a value for listening and little talking Dear Corky
