5. system board flash the BIOS from the CD If you do not have a BIOS update program CD flash the BIOS from the hard drive Flashing the BIOS From a CD 1 Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly K NOTE If you use a BIOS update program CD to flash the BIOS set up the computer to boot from a CD before inserting the CD 2 Insert the BIOS update program CD and restart the computer Follow the instructions that appear on the screen The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS When the flash update is complete the computer will automatically reboot 3 Press lt F2 gt during POST to enter the system setup program 4 Press lt Alt gt and lt F gt to reset the computer defaults 5 Press lt Esc gt select Save changes and reboot and press lt Enter gt to save configuration changes 6 Remove the flash BIOS update program CD from the drive and restart the computer Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive 1 Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in the main battery is properly installed and a network cable is attached 2 Turn on the computer 3 Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support dell com 4 Click Download Now to download the file 5 If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears click Yes Accept this Agreement The File Download window appears 6 Click Save this program to disk and then click OK The Save In window appea

Loosen the four captive screws on the hard drive cage and then lift the pull tab to flip the cage towards the center of the computer so that the SATA cables and connectors are accessible 1 captive screws 4 4 Carefully remove the SATA cables from the hard drive or drives that are installed in the cage Replacing a Hard Drive in the Hard Drive Cage 1 Remove two screws on each side of the hard drive cage to free the hard drive then lift the drive out of its tray in the cage NOTI CE When a hard drive is not in the computer store it in protective antistatic packaging See Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge in the Product Information Guide 1 screws 2 hard drive cage 2 3 Remove the new hard drive from its packaging Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive Place the new hard drive into the drive cage tray and secure it with two screws on each side a Install the hard drive so that the manufacturer s label faces the bottom of the drive cage and the SATA connectors are at the open end of the cage b Install the primary hard drive in the tray labeled O You can install a secondary hard drive in the tray labeled 1 Replacing the Hard Drive Cage 1 Place the hard drive cage upside down on the bottom of the computer with the SATA connectors and cables aligned and then firmly press the cables onto the hard drives connectors E NOTE Ensure that the power co

Removing the Keyboard 4 Remove the Mini Card cables from the Mini Cards if applicable see Wireless Mini Cards 5 Rotate the display assembly at an approximate angle of 90 degrees to the base 6 Remove the four screws from the hinges screws 4 7 Make note of the cable routing and carefully dislodge the Mini Card antenna cables from their routing guides and pull the cables with their connectors through the system board so that they are clear of the computer base 8 Pull on the display cable pull tab to disconnect the display graphics cable from the graphics card 9 Disconnect the display power connector from the display connector on the system board display power connector display graphics connector 10 If applicable remove the camera cable connector from the system board 11 Remove the display assembly from the computer base by rotating it towards you Replacing the Display Assembly 1 If applicable replace the camera cable 2 Reconnect the display power cable to the connector on the system board 3 Reconnect the display graphics cable to the connector on the graphics card 4 Make note of the cable routing and carefully slide the Mini Card antenna cables through the computer base and into their routing guides 5 Replace the four screws on the hinges 6 Reconnect the mini card cables to the Mini Cards if applicable see Wireless Mini Cards 7 Make note of the cable routing and carefully insert the Mini
11. acing a memory module remove the existing module a Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up b Remove the module from the connector 1 memory module 2 securing clip NOTICE If you need to install memory modules in two connectors install a memory module in the connector labeled DIMM1 before you install a module in the connector labeled DIMM2 Insert memory modules at a 45 degree angle to avoid damaging the connector 5 Ground yourself and install the new memory module K NOTE If the memory module is not installed properly the computer may not boot properly No error message indicates this failure a Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot b Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45 degree angle and rotate the module down until it clicks into place If you do not feel the click remove the module and reinstall it 6 Replace the memory module cover NOTICE If the cover is difficult to close remove the module and reinstall it Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer 7 Insert the battery into the battery bay or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet 8 Turn on the computer As the computer boots it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information If prompted press lt F1 gt to cont
