NOTE If the positive battery cable is already attached skip ahead to step 2 1 Remove the plastic cover if present from the positive battery terminal and attach the red cable to the positive battery terminal with the bolt and hex nut See Figure 3 9 Figure 3 9 2 Remove the plastic cover if present from the negative battery terminal and attach the black cable to the negative battery terminal with the bolt and hex nut See Figure 3 9 3 Position the red rubber boot over the positive battery terminal to help protect it from corrosion NOTE If the battery is put into service after the date shown on top side of battery charge the battery as instructed in the Service section your Operator s Manual prior to operating the tractor Section 3 AssEMBLY amp Set Up Checking Tire Pressure WARNING Maximum tire pressure under any circumstances is 14 psi on rear tires and 14 psi on front tires Equal tire pressure should be maintained at all times The tires on your tractor may be over inflated for shipping purposes Reduce the tire pressure before operating the tractor Recommended operating tire pressure is 14 psi on rear tires and 14 psi on front tires Check the sidewall of tire for maximum p s i Setting the Deck Wheels WARNING Keep hands and feet away from the discharge opening of the cutting deck NOTE The deck wheels are an anti scalp feature of the deck and are not designed to support the

SECTION 2 IMPORTANT SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES Slope Operation Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control and tip over accidents which can result in severe injury or death All slopes require extra caution If you cannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasy on it do not mow it For your safety use the slope gauge included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this machine on a sloped or hilly area If the slope is greater than 15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge do not operate this machine on that area or serious injury could result Do 1 Mow up and down slopes not across Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes Watch for holes ruts bumps rocks or other hidden objects Uneven terrain could overturn the machine Tall grass can hide obstacles Use slow speed Choose a low enough speed setting so that you will not have to stop or shift while on the slope Tires may lose traction on slopes even though the brakes are functioning properly Always keep machine in gear when going down slopes to take advantage of engine braking action Follow the manufacturer s recommendations for wheel weights or counterweights to improve stability Use extra care with grass catchers or other attachments These can change the stability of the machine Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction Rapid engagement or braking

NOTE The brake pedal must be fully depressed to activate the safety interlock switch when starting the tractor Seat Adjustment Lever The seat adjustment lever is located below the left of the seat The lever allows for adjustment forward or backward of the operator s seat Refer to the Assembly amp Set Up section for instructions on adjusting the seat position Throttle Choke Control Lever If so equipped The throttle choke control lever is located on the left side of the tractor s dash panel This lever controls the speed of the engine and when pushed all the way forward closes the choke for cold starting When set in a given position the throttle will maintain a uniform engine speed NOTE When operating the tractor with the cutting deck engaged be certain that the throttle choke control is always in the FAST position Throttle Control If so equipped The throttle control is located on the left side of the tractor s dash panel When set in a given position a uniform engine speed will be maintained Push the throttle control handle forward to increase the engine speed The tractor is designed to operate with the throttle control in the fast position full throttle when the tractor is being driven and the mower deck is engaged Pull the throttle control handle rearward to decrease the engine speed Le hand i ord Choke Control If so equipped The choke control is located on the dash panel

Place a block of wood between the center deck housing 5 baffle and the cutting blade to act as a stabilizer See Figure 7 5 Figure 7 5 3 Remove the hex flange nut that secures the blade to the spindle assembly See Figure 7 5 4 To properly sharpen the cutting blades remove equal amounts of metal from both ends of the blades along the cutting edges parallel to the trailing edge at a 25 30 angle Always grind each cutting blade edge equally to maintain proper blade balance See Figure 7 6 Figure 7 6 CAUTION If the cutting edge of the blade has previously been sharpened or if any metal separation is present replace the blades with new ones WARNING A poorly balanced blade will cause excessive vibration may damage to the tractor and or result in personal injury SECTION 7 SERVICE 2 l Test the blade s balance using a blade balancer Grind metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly NOTE When replacing the blade be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked Bottom or with a part number stamped in it facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position CAUTION Use a torque wrench to tighten the blade spindle hex flange nut to between 70 Ibs ft and 90 165 Changing the Deck Belt WARNING The V belts found on your tractor are specially designed to engage and disengage safely A substitute non OEM V belt can be dangerous by not disengaging

18. and can cause burns to the skin Exercise caution to avoid burns To complete an oil change proceed as follows 1 Run the engine for a short time to warm the engine oil The oil will flow more freely and carry away more impurities Use care to avoid burns from hot oil 2 Locate the oil drain hose on the side of the engine 3 Place an appropriate oil collection container with at least a 2 5 quart capacity below the opening of the oil drain tube to collect the used oil Remove the oil fill cap dipstick from the oil fill tube SECTION 6 MAINTENANCE amp ADJUSTMENTS 4 Remove the oil drain hose from the clip on the left side of the frame See Figure 6 1 Figure 6 1 5 Remove the oil drain hose plug from the end of the hose See Figure 6 1 Drain the engine oil into the collection container After draining the oil wipe any residual oil from the oil drain hose Replace the plug on the drain hose and fully tighten Replace the oil drain hose into the clip and snap the clip to secure 7 Replace the oil filter and refill the engine with new oil as instructed in the engine operator s manual To refill the oil re install the plug at the end of the tube and refer to the engine operator s manual for refilling instructions oil type and amount NOTE Maintenance repair or replacement of the emission control devices and systems which are being done at owner s expense may be performed by any engine repair establi
