15. gasoline and oil as instructed below Read the instructions carefully A WAR Use extreme care when handling gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive Never fuel the machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running NOTE Your log splitter may be shipped with motor oil in the engine You MUST check the oil level before operating Be careful not to overfill Gasoline can be added to the engine when the log splitter is in either the horizontal or vertical position However it may be easier when the splitter is in the vertical position 1 Remove oil fill dipstick 2 Check the oil level making certain not to rub the dipstick along the inside walls of the oil fill tube This would result in a false dipstick reading Refill to the FULL mark on the dipstick if necessary Replace the dipstick and tighten 3 If necessary with the log splitter on level ground use a funnel to fill engine with oil to the FULL mark on the dipstick Be careful not to overfill Overfilling will cause the engine to smoke profusely and will result in poor engine performance 4 Check the oil level three times prior to starting the engine to be certain you ve gotten an accurate dipstick reading Running the engine with too little oil can result in permanent engine damage Gasoline 1 Remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank 2 Make sure the container from which you will pour the gasoline is clean and free from

AM AND SPLITTING WEDGE Before each use lubricate both sides of the beam where it comes into contact with the splitting wedge with engine oil The wedge plate on the log splitter is designed so the gibs on the side of the wedge plate can be removed and rotated and or turned over for even wear Make certain to readjust the adjustment bolts so the wedge moves freely but no excess space exists between the wedge plate and the beam ENGINE Check Engine Oil 1 Stop the engine and wait several minutes before checking the oil level 2 Remove the oil fill dipstick 3 Check the oil level on the dipstick With the engine on level ground the oil must be to the FULL mark on the dipstick 4 Replace the dipstick and tighten Changing Engine Oil Refer to an authorized Sears Service Center Service Air Filter The air filter prevents damaging dirt dust etc from entering the carburetor and being forced into the engine and is important to engine life and performance WARNING Never run the engine without an air cleaner completely assembled Service the cartridge every 25 operating hours or every season Service the cartridge more often under dusty conditions To Service Air Filter 1 Loosen the air filter cover screw but do not remove the screw from the cover Swing the cover down to remove from the hinge 2 Inspect the filter for discoloration or dirt accumulation If either is present proceed as follows a Clean the inside o

77. rust or foreign particles Never use gasoline that may be stale from long periods of storage in its container Gasoline that has been sitting for any period longer than four weeks should be considered stale 3 Fill the fuel tank with about 1 5 quarts of clean fresh gasoline with a minimum of 85 octane NOTE Never overfill the fuel tank Fill tank to no more than 1 2 inch below bottom of filler neck to provide space for fuel expansion PREPARING THE LOG SPLITTER 1 Lubricate the beam area where the splitting wedge will slide with engine oil Do not use grease 2 Remove the vented reservoir dipstick which is located in front of the engine on top of the reservoir tank See Figure 8 Figure 8 ASSEMBLY NOTE The log splitter is filled to the proper operating level from the manu facturer with Shell Telius amp 32 Hydraulic Fluid However you MUST check the fluid level before operating If not filled proceed with the following steps A WAR Much of the original fluid has been drawn into the cylinder and hoses Make certain to refill the reservoir to prevent damage to the hydraulic pump 3 Check the fluid level using the dipstick See Figure 8 Do not overfill 4 Replace the vented dipstick securely tightening it until the top of the threads are flush with top of the pipe 5 Disconnect the spark plug and prime the pump by pulling the recoil starter as far as it will go Repeat approximately 10 times 6
