DO HAND START all bolts and tighten in staggered sequence to factory torque specifications DO TURN pump shaft by hand to check for free rotation after installation on the engine DO CHECK radiator hoses and belts o Replace all swollen or collapsed hoses o Fan belts that are frayed or cracked must be replaced e DO CHECK thermostat and radiator cap e DO CHECK for bent or damaged fan blades NEVER STRAIGHTEN A BENT BLADE e DO CHECK fan clutch for loss of oil looseness or wobble vibration caused by a damaged or worn out fan Fan clutch will damage the water pump We do recommend the replacement of the viscous clutch unit at the time of installation of the new or remanufactured water pump e DO CHECK all pulleys for proper alignment II Technical Information e DO NOT over tighten fan belts Excessive fan belt tension 1s the number one cause of water pump failure This puts excessive pressure on the bearing adjust fan belts to factory recommended tension e DOSTART the engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached Check for leaks and thermostat operation e DO PERFORM the air bleeding procedure properly e DO NOT stand in line with the fan blade when running the engine Standard or Reverse Rotation Water Pumps Refer to the belt path diagram under the hood typically located on the fan shroud front fender brace or located the water pump pulley on the vehicle Compare with the diagram below Water pump pulleys r

17. and to be re circulated in the engine Basically the cooling system consists of several components and the heart is the water pump Water Pump It delivers a continuous flow of coolant through the radiator and the engine A paddle style impeller mounted inside the water pump housing rotating on the bearing supported shaft 1s responsible for moving the coolant The impeller shaft is driven externally by a belt or directly driven by a shaft Water pumps do not require direct maintenance Keeping the coolant clean and fresh and the belts properly tensioned is about all the maintenance the water pump requires Water Pump Inspection Seepage from the vent hole is a sure sign of seal failure To check for this you must carefully inspect around the vent hole for trails of rust or coolant deposits on the water pump housing If you see rust or coolant deposits on the water pump you will need to replace the water pump Worn water pump bearing can be detected by checking for side to side play at the shaft There should be no perceptible play as you apply hand pressure to the shaft Also there should be no perceptible noise from the water pump when the engine 1s operating A noisy pump means the water pump needs to be replaced Water Pump Installation Tips DO FLUSH your cooling system of all sediments rust scale with chemical flush DO NOT install a water pump in a contaminated system DO NOT STRIKE water pump shaft This can damage the bearing
