SDN SOCIETY OF DIX NEUVIEMISTES NEWSLETTER 24 OCTOBER 2012 Dear SDN members The Society celebrated the advent of its tenth annual conference this year with a return to Ireland where in University College Dublin the Society had been inaugurated on 4 July 2001 On this occasion our destination was Mary Immaculate College University of Limerick and our theme The Senses From osmophilia to blindness and hallucinations to street cries a rich and diverse array of papers explored every one of our five or is it six senses This landmark tenth conference also provided a moment to reflect on how the Society has grown and developed since its inauguration as well as the occasion to renew its original commitments to the promotion of research to the postgraduate community and to fostering links with related societies in the UK France and USA You can read a report of the conference and see some snapshots on pp 5 6 of this Newsletter The biennial SDN Postgraduate Conference was held at King s College London in September on the theme of Change and Exchange Organised by SDN Postgraduate Representative Ewa Szypula King s College London the day proved a highly sociable and intellectually stimulating event bringing together postgraduate speakers from across Europe and from the USA A report of the event can be read on pp 7 8 This year saw further changes to the SDN Executive Committee Membership Secretary Bradley Stephens Un

College as well as on the travelling aesthetics of flanerie the object of Estelle Murail s paper King s College London Universit Paris VII Denis Diderot Reading and reception were the subject of a third panel which pressed on the transactions changes and exchanges that are fundamental to storytelling In a paper on Narrative Value and Transaction in Le Colonel Chabert Jonathan Paine University of Oxford explored connections between the rise of a commercial bourgeoisie and the changing value of narrative as a commodity of exchange It was with the delicious scent of warm Madeleines that the final session of the afternoon examined rather appropriately the very Proustian topic of memory and intertextuality foregrounding notably in the poetry of Jules Laforgue with papers by Madeleine Guy and Renaud Lejosne Guigon both from the Universit de Poitiers authorial strategies or practices of borrowing and reworking Thanks to the exceptional organisational and baking skills of SDN Postgraduate representative Ewa Szypula speakers and delegates were kept in a state of satiety throughout the day and an evening drinks reception capped off a wonderful day of warm discussions and exchanges of our own Claire White SDN POSTGRADUATE PRIZE The SDN Postgraduate Prize is awarded for the best postgraduate conference paper submitted for the Society s Annual Conference Postgraduates w

13. also pictorial or musical created for them by acquaintances at the moment of the request I analyze the practice of the album focusing on three types of texts the essays on social customs tudes de m urs that present this practice in its context the fictional texts that include it as an important element of the narration and the albums themselves that I have been able to consult in libraries in France and Spain Going beyond its mere constitution as an aesthetic artifact I examine the album as a historical object that reveals public and private dynamics of these national contexts My approach to the album has led me to understand the functioning of multiple social transactions in nineteenth century France and Spain including gender relationships since it was frequently used as a means of communication in the courting process notions of artistic value through the evaluation of the album itself and of the entries collected in it and ideas of market value considering the value of the album before and after its pages were filled up with contributions In addition the dynamic established through album ownership and the participation of contributors in these coveted books reveals structural aspects of class relationships in these contexts The request for album entries as I have been able to discover became a gesture of communication between individuals who belonged to the same social strata It is astonishing that considering all the
14. analytical possibilities that the study of the album offers it has not been investigated thoroughly by literary scholars in France or Spain Besides analyzing the practice of the album in the specific nineteenth century Spanish and French contexts my dissertation project also offers a transnational approach that makes it a valuable contribution to the field of European studies La Biblioth que imaginaire de Jules Laforgue pratiques de r criture dans Moralit s l gendaires Madeleine Guy Universit de Poitiers madeleine guy univ poitiers fr Jules Laforgue 1860 1887 has built his work on a massive use of intertextuality If his first unpublished poems Le Sanglot de la Terre can often be read as a rewriting of Eduard von Hartmann and Arthur Schopenhauer s philosophical 10 texts it is in the collection of short stories Moralit s l gendaires that the rewriting is the most blatant and elaborate In these six short stories Laforgue doesn t merely write a parody of the original books of which he gives a new version Hamlet Ovid s Metamorphoses Lohengrin Flaubert s Herodias but he combines them with a large number of other texts in what resembles a true intertextual feuilletage Moreover if these combinations always seem very odd to the reader the strangeness the anachronisms and the casual tone of the author hide a much more considered way of making such connections In many cases the intertexts reflec
15. ational Conference in central London with the support of the University of Notre Dame Birkbeck College and the Institut fran ais du Royaume Uni Guests of honour will be M Henri Mitterand and Mme Martine Le Blond Zola The Colloquium will be interdisciplinary and international in range and will include the interface between Great Britain and France in the period 1860 1914 We invite papers on a wide range of topics from the works of specific writers artists and musicians to dramatic theory and practice reception studies and political historical analyses Authors apart from Zola might include for instance Maupassant Huysmans and the Goncourt Brothers Proposals on other writers of the time such as Wilde and Mallarm who engaged with the problems of the representation of reality will also be welcome as will relevant areas of the painting sculpture and photography of that era Contributions may be in French or English and each paper should last for no more than 30 minutes approximately 20 000 characters Papers should be accompanied by a summary of no more than 200 words in English or French English for essays in French French for essays in English The final publication will be in either or both languages depending on the material agreed by the editors The Colloquium will consist of plenary papers groups of short papers and discussion groups The editorial committee hopes to publish a selection of contributions in a volume of

26. h SDN annual conference was held at Mary Immaculate College University of Limerick from 30 March to 1 April this year Its theme The Senses proved aptly to be a highly stimulating one attracting scholars from Europe various parts of North America the Middle East and Asia Despite a few last minute setbacks namely the very unfortunate and unavoidable absence of the Society s President Anne Green as well as of two of our keynote speakers Richard Stamelman Dartmouth College At the Vin d honneur New Hampshire and Pierre Marc de Biasi Director of the Institut des textes et manuscrits modernes CNRS once underway the conference advanced full steam ahead The opening plenary lecture by Roger Pearson The Queen s College University of Oxford on Poetry and the Sixth Sense got us off to a magnificent start This meditation on the processes and sensuous mysteries of poetic creativity took us on a journey through writers as diverse as Mallarm Chateaubriand Lamartine Baudelaire and Hugo ending most appropriately with a poem by Seamus Heaney which left the audience enraptured and reflective The twenty four panel sessions which followed covered a great variety of topics Alongside author panels on Balzac Flaubert Debussy Zola and Proust papers exploited fully the rhetorical potential of the theme ranging from George Sand s business sense to the Decadent sense of humour Naturally questi
