6. 20 BASS AND TREBLE TONE CONTROLS Adjusts the tone by controlling the levels of two frequency bands Turn each control toward to enhance the corre sponding frequency band or toward to attenuate it TREBLE Adjusts the high frequency level BASS Adjusts the low frequency level CLASS A SWITCH Switches the amplifier operation mode between Class A 30 W 8 and Class AB 130 W 8 ohm The CLASS A indicator lights when the Class A operation is set This switch must be pressed while the power is OFF The initial setting of this switch is for Class AB operation NOTE The temperature of the top cover of the unit may rise during Class A operation but this is not a malfunction Do not place any object on the unit for this may block the ventilation and cause damage or malfunction CLASS A INDICATOR This indicator lights when the unit is in the class A operation mode For details refer to the description of the CLASS A switch SPEAKERS SWITCH Press to select the speakers to be used The corresponding indicator lights up When listening with headphones set the switch to OFF 24 PHONES JACK Insert the standard phone plug of the headphones into this jack Notes on BALANCED OUTPUTS connectors 1 The BALANCED output connectors uses XLR connectors 2 There are two types of professional type internal wiring methods for XLR connectors 1 USA method Pin 2 COLD Pin 3 HOT 2 Europe method

Pin 2 HOT Pin COLD 6 9 G 601 2 cor XLA 3 The PM 90SE use the USA method described in 1 above When XLR connector cables are used and if your preampiitier or main amplifier uses the Europe method the reproduced signal may be out of phase In this case change connrctions of pin 2 and 3 of one of the XLR connectors of the cable to the USA method Also when you use an XLR balanced cable see illustration below and if the preamplifier or main amplifier uses the Europe method change the connections of pin 2 and pin 3 of one of the XLR connectors of the cable to the USA method Now the signal can be reproduced in proper phase OPERATION PROCEDURES PLAY AN ANALOG RECORD 4 Set the INPUT SELECTOR switch to PHONO Press the MM MC switch according to the type of cartridge MM or MC used on the turntable 2 Play a record on the turntable 3 Adjust the volume with the VOLUME control and adjust the tone with the BASS and TREBLE controls NOTES Set the VOLUME control to the minimum position betore placing the stylus on the record or before replacing the cartridge Do not apply shock or vibration to the turntable during play as this may cause the stylus to jump and the analog record to be damaged If the turntable is installed too close to the speakers the volume may not be able to be increased to a high level due to howiing Do not switch the power OFF while

Act 1956 Dramatic and Musical Performers Act 1958 Performers Protection Acts 1963 and 1972 any subsequent statutory enactments and orders ABOUT THIS USER GUIDE Refer to the Figures on the pages at the rear of this user guide The callout numbers on the Figures correspond to those found in the text All references to the connections and controls that are printed in BOLD type are as they appear on the unit PRECAUTIONS The following precautions should be taken when operating the equipment GENERAL PRECAUTIONS When setting the equipment ensure that the ventilation holes are not covered air is allowed to circulate freely around the equipment itis on a vibration free surface it will not be exposed to interference from an external source it will not be exposed to excessive heat cold moisture or dust it will not be exposed to direct sunlight it will not be exposed to electrostatic discharges In addition never place heavy objects on the equipment If a foreign body or water does enter the equipment contact your nearest dealer or service center Do not pull out the plug by pulling on the mains lead hold the plug It is advisable when leaving the house or during thunderstorm to disconnect the equipment from the mains supply CONNECTIONS Figure 1 CONNECTION OF TUNER Connect the output jacks of your stereo tuner to the TUNER jacks of this unit CONNECTION OF COMPA

CT DISC PLAYER Connect the output jacks of your CD player to the CD jacks of this unit CONNECTION OF TURNTABLE Connect the L Left output cord of the turntable to the L PHONO jack of this unit and connect the R Right output cord to the PHONO jack Also be sure 10 connect the turntable s grounding wire to the GND jack of this unit The GND jack does not have to be connected if the turntable is not provided with a grounding wire CONNECTION OF DCC TAPE DECK Connect the IN recording input jacks of the tape deck to the TAPE OUT jacks of this unit and connect the OUT playback output jacks of the tape deck to the TAPE IN jacks of this unit CONNECTION OF SPEAKER SYSTEM The speakers in the speaker system should have an impedance between 4 and 16 ohms If speakers with an impedance of less than 4 ohms are connected the protec tion circuitry may be activated during play Connect the Right channel speaker to the R terminals and the Left channel speaker to the L terminals The output terminals have positive Red and negative Black polarity and each speaker also has the same polarity and When connecting the speakers be sure 10 connect the terminals with the same polarity with with CONTROLS CONNECTORS AND INDICATORS Figure 2 aux 1 2 INPUT JACKS These are auxiliary input jacks which can be used to connect the audio outputs of AV components such as TV multiplex stereo au

DING The playback sound of a program source component such as a turntable a tuner or a CD player can be recorded on tape as follows 1 Set the REC SELECTOR switch to SOURCE 2 Set the INPUT SELECTOR switch to the program source to be recorded 3 Play the program source 4 Operate the tape deck s to record the playback sound on tape s TAPE MONITORING When a three head tape deck is connected to the TAPE jacks the sound recorded on tape can be monitored through the speakers by pressing the TAPE monitor switch In this case the tape deck must be connected to this unit via both recording and playback connection cords NOTE When the tape deck is a two head system the recorded sound cannot be monitored even when the monitor switch is pressed In this case however the sound of the program source being recorded can be monitored DUBBING OF PRERECORDED TAPES USING THE REC OUT SWITCH For dubbing from tape to tape s set the REC SELECTOR switch to DCC TAPE 1 2 or TAPE 1 2 0 Tapes can be copied regardless of the setting of the INPUT SELECTOR switch D NOTE To monitor the recorded sound press the DCC TAPE 1 or TAPE 2 monitor switch No signal is output at the REC OUT jacks when the REC SELECTOR switch is set to OFF There is no need to output a signal at the REC OUT jacks unless when recording it on tape s Therefore it is recommended to set the switch usually to OFF so that the s

18. ignal path inside the unit can be shortened and crosstalk etc can be reduced When recording set to the position other than OFF CARE AND MAINTENANCE This section describes the care and maintenance tasks that must be performed to optimize the operation of your Marantz equipment CLEANING OF EQUIPMENT EXTERNAL SURFACES The exterior finish of your PM 90SE will last indefinitely with proper care and cleaning Never use scouring pads steel wool scouring powders or harsh chemical agents e g lye solution alcohol thinners benzine insecticide or other volatile substances as these will mar the finish of the equipment Likewise never use cloths containing chemical substances If the equipment gets dirty wipe the external surfaces with a soft lint free cloth I the equipment becomes heavily soiled dilute some washing up liquid in water in a ratio of one part detergent to six parts water dip a sott lint free in the solution and wring the cloth out until it is damp wipe the equipment with the damp cloth dry the equipment by wiping it with a dry cloth FUSE REPLACEMENT If a fuse blows unplug the equipment from the mai Replace the fuse only with fuse of the same type Replacing the fuse with one of a higher rating or a slower action will not protect the equipment and will invalidate the warranty If the replacement fuse blows again after the equipment is turned on the equipment should be tak
