1. Your refrigerator is built to give you many years of dependable service However there are a few things you can do to help extend its product life This section will tell you how to clean your refrigerator and what to do when going on vacation moving or during a power outage Cleaning your refrigerator Both the refrigerator and freezer sections defrost automatically But both should be cleaned about once a month to help prevent odors from building up Spills should be wiped up right away To clean your refrigerator turn the Refrigerator Control to OFF unplug it take out all removable parts and clean the refrigerator according to the following directions AWARNING Personal Injury Hazard Refrigeration system tubes are located near the defrost pan and can become hot Clean defrost pan carefully Failure to do so could result in personal injury PART Removable parts shelves crisper etc Outside Inside walls freezer should be allowed to warm up so cloth won t stick Door liners and gaskets Plastic parts covers and panels WHAT TO USE Sponge or cloth with mild detergent and warm water Sponge cloth or paper towel with mild detergent warm water and an appliance wax or good auto paste wax Sponge soft cloth or paper towel with baking soda or mild detergent and warm water Sponge soft cloth or paper towel with mild detergent and warm water Soft clean sponge or soft clean cloth wi

11. at you want Close door as soon as food is source such as a range water heater furnace removed radiator or in direct sunlight USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR Understanding the sounds you may hear Your new refrigerator may make sounds that your old one didn t Because the sounds are new to you you might be concerned about them Don t be Most of the new sounds are normal Hard surfaces like the floor walls and cabinets can make the sounds seem louder The following describes the kinds of sounds that might be new to you and what may be making them Slight hum soft hiss You may hear the refrigerator s fan motor and moving air Clicking or snapping sounds The thermostat makes a definite click when the refrigerator stops running It also makes a sound when the refrigerator starts The defrost timer will click when the defrost cycle starts Water sounds When the refrigerator stops running you may hear gurgling in the tubing for a few minutes after it stops You may also hear defrost water running into the defrost water pan and sizzle during defrost cycles ice maker sounds o trickling water e thud clatter of ice lf your refrigerator has an ice maker you may hear buzzing from the water valve trickling water and the clatter of ice dumped into the bin CARING FOR YOUR REFRIGERATOR Caring For Your Refrigerator In This Section Cleaning your refrigerator Power interruptions Vacation and moving care
12. away from the wall e Vacuum coils when dusty or dirty Coils may need to be cleaned as often as every other month e Roll refrigerator back into place Remember to leave 1 inch 2 5 cm between the cabinet back and the wall Check to see if the refrigerator is level e Roll refrigerator out away from the wall If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker roll refri gerator out only as far as the water line allows e Clean floor e Roll refrigerator back into place Remember to leave 1 inch 2 5 cm between the cabinet back and the wall e Check to see if the refrigerator is level Vacation and moving care Long vacations Remove all the food if you are going for a month or more If your refrigerator is equipped with an automatic ice maker turn off the water supply to the ice maker at least one day ahead When the last load of ice drops turn off the ice maker Make sure all ice is dispensed out of mechanism Unplug the refrigerator Cean it rinse well and dry Tape rubber or wood blocks to the tops of both doors to prop them open far enough for air to get in This will keep odor and mold from building up A WARNING Personal Injury Hazard Do not allow children to climb on play near or climb inside the refrigerator when the doors are blocked open They may become injured or trapped To restart refrigerator see Using Your Refrigera tor on page 7 14 Short vacations No need to shut off
13. e 12 Make sure the refrigerator is level so the pan does not overflow Replace household fuse or reset circuit breaker Firmly plug power cord into a live circuit with proper voltage See page 5 Replace bulb See page 11 Allow the freezer time to get cold this could take overnight Push signal arm down to the ON position See page 10 Turn the water valve on Check the water line for clogs or leaks Clean the coils See page 14 On hot days or if the room is too warm the motor naturally runs longer Open the door as few times as possible The motor will run longer in order to cool down the interior when food is added IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE OR SERVICE Remember Motor running time depends on different things number of door openings amount of food stored temperature of the room setting of controls etc Your new refrigerator may be larger than your old one so it has more space to be cooled It also has a regular freezer instead of a frozen food compartment All this means better refrigeration and may require more running time than your old one 2 If you need assistance Call Whirlpool Consumer Assistance Center telephone number Dial free from anywhere in the U S 1 800 253 1301 and talk with one of our trained consultants The consultant can instruct you in how to obtain satisfactory operation from your appliance or if service is necessary recommend a qualified service company

15. igerator and freezer compartments When the refrigerator is plugged in for the first time 1 Set the Temperature Control to 3 normal Temperature Control adjustments range from 13 normal 1 warmest to 5 coldest 8 J coldest NOTE Turning the Temperature Control to OFF stops cooling in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments but it does not discon nect the refrigerator from the power supply off 2 Give the refrigerator time to cool down completely before adding food This could take several hours 3 Adjust the Temperature Control to have food as cold as you like The settings indicated above should be correct for normal household refrigerator usage NOTE The built in exterior moisture control continuously guards against moisture build up on the outside of the refrigerator cabinet and mullion area USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR Adjusting the refrigerator shelves The refrigerator shelves can be adjusted to match the way you use your refrigerator To remove the shelves 1 Remove items from the shelf 2 Slide shelf straight out to the stop 3 Lift back of shelf over stop 4 Slide shelf out the rest of the way To replace the shelves 1 Slide back of shelf into shelf track in wall of cabinet 2 Guide front of shelf into shelf track 3 Slide shelf in all the way Removing the crisper s and cover To remove the crisper s 1 Slide crisper s straight out to the stop 2 Lift
16. ity e It is normal for ice crescents to be attached by a corner They will break apart easily e You will hear water running when ice maker is working You ll hear ice fall into the bin Don t let these sounds bother you e The ice maker will not operate until the freezer is cold enough to make ice This can take overnight e Because of new plumbing connections the first ice may be discolored or off flavored Discard the first few batches of ice e If you remove the ice bin raise the signal arm to shut off the ice maker When you return the bin push it in all the way and lower the signal arm to the ON position e lf cubes are stored too long they may develop an off flavor like stale water Throw them away Ice maker will make new ice Cubes in the ice bin can also become smaller by evaporation e Good water quality is important for good ice quality It is not recommended that the ice maker be connected to a softened water supply Water softener chemicals such as salt from a malfunctioning softener can damage the ice maker mold and lead to poor ice quality If a softened water supply cannot be avoided it is important that the water softener be well maintained and operating properly 10 USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR Changing the light bulb Tle Electrical Shock Hazard Before removing a light bulb either unplug the refrigerator or disconnect the electricity leading to the refrigerator at the main po
