What is VAIO Power Management Power management is to set up power schemes of your computer that is running on AC power or batteries to suit your requirements for power consumption VAIO Power Management is a software application developed exclusively for VAIO computers With this software application you can enhance the Windows power management functions to ensure better operations of your computer and for longer battery life For more information on setups see Setting Up a Power Scheme Page 1 Setting Up a Power Scheme Operational flow Follow the flow chart below to set up a power scheme of your computer For information on the precise setup procedure click here Open Power Options from Windows Control Panel Click VAIO Optimized in the Power schemes drop down list on the Power Schemes tab On the VAIO Power Management tab specify desired options Setup example In the follow ing setup example you decrease LCD brightness and turn off pow er to unused devices for longer battery life of your computer that is running on batteries Provided below is just a single example of the pow er management setup and you can set up a power scheme in any way to suit your needs Hint To display hints on pow er management for your computer running on batteries click Optimize battery use at the bottom left of the VAIO Pow er Management tab Not Py es e To set up a power scheme you must have a computer administrator account e S
4. and the default settings are restored for all the pow er scheme options Page 7 Using VAIO Power Management Viewer f Note VAIO Pow er Management View er may not be available depending on the model of your computer Starting the viewer To start VAIO Pow er Management View er click Hint Alternatively you can click Start point to All Programs and VAIO Pow er Management and then click VAIO Pow er Management View er to start the view er on the VAIO Pow er Management tab Using the viewer VAIO Pow er Management View er is provided w ith tw o tabs Running on batteries and Plugged in Starting the view er automatically displays the tab appropriate to the current pow er scheme of your computer On each tab the radar chart show s performance w ith the current pow er scheme and the modified pow er scheme in the designated colors e Changing the power scheme Select the desired pow er scheme from the drop down list on VAIO Pow er Management View er e Viewing performance with the power scheme modified with VAIO Power Management When both VAIO Pow er Management and VAIO Pow er Management View er are running VAIO Pow er Management View er show s performance w ith the pow er scheme that w as modified w ith VAIO Pow er Management ld Note Use VAIO Pow er Management to set up or modify the pow er scheme Page 8 Icons on the Notification Area Note No CPU control icon may appear on the Notification area depending on the mod
5. el of your computer When your computer is running you can follow the steps below to display an icon that indicates the CPU control status on the Notification area 1 Click Advanced on the VAIO Power Management tab The VAIO Pow er Management w indow appears 2 Click the Show CPU status icon in the taskbar check box to check the option 3 Click OK This displays a CPU control icon on the Notification area Move the mouse pointer to point the icon to display the pop up message telling the current CPU control status When you change the pow er scheme under Pow er schemes of Pow er Options in Window s Control Panel or w hen change the power source the appropriate CPU control icon appears on the Notification area Icon CPU control status Description None Your computer runs w ith the maximum CPU clock frequency to ensure the best performance Ga Adaptive The best CPU clock frequency and the best pow er voltage are applied to the CPU according to the state of your computer F Battery Life The CPU clock frequency and the pow er voltage are minimized to reduce pow er consumption of your computer K Degrade In addition to the Battery Life settings the CPU speed is controlled to reduce pow er consumption of your computer d Note Some icons may not be displayed depending on the model of your computer Page 9 Disabling VAIO Power Management The follow ing describes how to disable VAIO Pow er Management t Notes Normally you do not
6. g to changes in temperature inside your computer With this item you can specify a preference of the thermal control strategy Performance or Quiet o Performance Rotates the fan with the preference for lowering the temperature inside your computer o Quiet Keeps the fan noise quiet while discharging internal heat CPU Fan Control Maintains the fan rpm by temporarily reducing the CPU operation speed to minimize unpleasant fan nose Five CPU fan control levels are available Level 1 Quiet through Level 5 Performance The smaller the level number is the less noise the fan makes Selecting a lower level makes the CPU operation speed slower resulting in a slower operation speed of software that requires heavy CPU load Note If your computer supports CPU Control this option is only available when Adaptive is selected for CPU Control Page 5 Other Devices e i LINK Port Select Enable Disable or No Change to specify power management of the i LINK connector Selecting Disable disables data exchange with another device via an i LINK connection but reduces power consumption of your computer When No Change is selected both for Plugged in and Running on batteries note that changing the power supply source does not affect the power management of the i LINK connector Some models of the VAIO computer have an additional option Adaptive for the power management of the i LINK connector When this option is selected connecting the Port

8. ning on batteries changing the power supply source does not affect the power management of the wireless LAN feature e CFCard Select Enable Disable or No Change to specify power management of the CF Compact Flash slot Selecting Disable disables the CF slot but reduces power consumption of your computer When No Change is selected both for Plugged in and Running on batteries note that changing the power supply source does not affect the power management of the CF slot e Ethernet Select Enable Disable Adaptive or No Change to specify power management of the Ethernet network feature Selecting Disable disables communications on the Ethernet network but reduces power consumption of your computer When Adaptive is selected note that connecting a LAN cable to the Port Replicator automatically changes the Ethernet setting to Enable In addition when No Change is selected both for Plugged in and Running on batteries changing the power supply source does not affect the power management of the Ethernet feature Page 6 Restoring the Default Settings The pow er scheme settings that you changed on the VAIO Pow er Management tab can be restored to the default settings 1 Click Advanced on the VAIO Power Management tab The VAIO Pow er Management w indow appears 2 Click Reset by default The Confirm window appears 3 Check Restore all power schemes to the original factory default settings and click OK The Confirm window closes
