Notes on CD and DVD Discs Handling CD or DVD discs Q Do not touch the surface of the disc Q Do not drop or bend the disc Q Avoid using adhesive labels to identify your discs Adhesive labels may come off while the disc is in use in your optical drive and may cause damage to the unit Cleaning CD or DVD discs Q Fingerprints and dust on the surface of a disc may cause read errors Proper care of the disc is essential to maintain its reliability Do not use solvents such as benzine thinner commercially available cleaners or anti static spray as they may cause damage to the disc Q For normal cleaning hold the disc by its edge and use a soft cloth to wipe the surface from the center out Se Connecting External Speakers Q Ifthe disc is badly soiled moisten a soft cloth with water wring it out well and use it to wipe the surface of the disc from the center out Wipe off any remaining moisture with a dry soft cloth Connecting External Speakers You can enhance the sound quality of your computer by connecting external speakers To connect external speakers Q Use the Q symbol to locate the Headphone connector Plug the speaker cable into this connector Make sure your speakers are designed for computer use Turn down the volume of the speakers before you turn them on Do not place disks on the speakers the speaker s magnetic field may damage the data on the disks See the manual supplied with your speak

OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 is a software application that utilizes Sony Corporation s copyright protection technology OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 maintains the holder s copyrights by preventing unauthorized distribution of digital audio files OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 software enables you to play and record audio CDs and import digital audio files When recording an audio CD with OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 it is encoded in ATRAC3 format onto your computer s hard drive By downloading digital audio files from EMD services the downloaded and imported data can then be played on your computer or transferred to external devices media while maintaining the copyright information of the contents OpenMG Jukebox 2 0 converts your existing MP3 and WAV format audio files into OpenMG format WAV format audio files are converted into ATRAC3 format or changed into OpenMG MP3 format Electronic Music Distribution EMD Services EMD allows you to download music files via the Internet To use OpenMG enabled services on the Internet you need Q Access to the Internet from your computer Sign up with an Internet Service Provider and configure your computer for Internet access before using EMD services Q Free EMD programs such as EMD key installer These programs can be downloaded from the Sony EMD Web page Q An EMD service provider Consult the provider for details regarding service To protect your personal data Sony u

5. is displayed If the message reads Hibernation feature is disabled click the Enable button 3 Click OK and restart your notebook o cc Troubleshooting your Notebook The Power Management setting is not responding Your notebook s operating system may become unstable if it is interrupted orif you attempt to make changes before the compuer completely enters a lower power mode such as Hibernate Q To restore the computer to its normal operating stability 1 Close all open applications 2 Restart the computer by pressing Ctrl Alt Delete at the same time and then selecting Restart from the drop down list A If this procedure does not work press and hold the power button for four seconds or longer to shut down the notebook The sound of my notebook s fan is too loud Use the PowerPanel utility to change the Thermal Control Strategy setting to Quiet This setting slows down the CPU speed See PowerPanel Help for more information Troubleshooting the LCD screen My LCD screen is blank Q Check that the notebook is plugged into a power source and that it is turned on Q Check that the power indicator on the notebook is on Q Check that the battery pack is inserted properly and that they are charged Q The notebook may be in LCD Video Standby mode Press any key to activate the screen Q The display mode may be set to external display mode Press and hold the Fn key while pressing F7 several times My LCD

Icon amp amp amp Description Standby Puts the system into Standby mode a power management state that saves the state of the system and peripheral devices in memory RAM Power consumption reduces to a minimum and the system remains on To return the system to the active state press any key or the power button on your computer Hibernate Provides for the lowest level of power consumption The system writes the state of the system and peripheral devices to the hard disk and turns off the system power To return the system to the original state use the power button to turn on power The system saves the data in the Save to Disk Partition on the hard drive LCD Video Standby Turns off the video display to save power If you turn off the Video Standby timer the display remains active except when the system enters Standby mode The video display system is one of the largest consumers of power in the system Conserving Battery Power When using the notebook with a battery the LCD display and the hard drive can be set to switch off automatically to conserve battery power For details see Power Management Profiles on page 57 Displaying Battery Information You can display information for the battery on your computer The following sections briefly describe how to display your computer s general battery information You can also refer to PowerPanel Help for more detailed information To activate the Batter

Using the Application Driver and Recovery CDs My pointing device does not work properly Q You may have disabled the pointing device without a mouse being connected to the notebook You must restart the notebook to make the pointing device work again Q If your pointing device is interpreting a single tap as a double click you must adjust the button assignments Follow these steps o Troubleshooting your Notebook 1 Click Start point to Control Panel and then click on the Mouse icon 2 Change the button assignments in the Mouse Properties dialog box One of the buttons is assigned to the double click action Q Reinstall the mouse touchstick drivers For details see Using the Application Driver and Recovery CDs The pointer does not move while using the pointing device or mouse Q Press the Windows key on the keyboard and select Shut Down to display the Shut Down Windows dialog box Select Restart and then press Enter Q Ifyou cannot turn off your notebook as described in the step above press Ctrl Alt Delete at the same time to restart the notebook Q Ifyou cannot restart your notebook as described in the step above press and hold the power button for more than four seconds to turn off the notebook Q Ifthe pointer does not move while playing a disc press Ctrl Alt Delete at the same time to stop playback and restart the notebook Troubleshooting drives PC Cards and peripheral devices My flopp

The notebook restarts My notebook starts but the message Operating system not found appears 7 a and Windows does not start Q Make sure there is no diskette in the floppy disk drive non bootable Q Ifanon bootable disk is in the drive follow these steps 1 2 Turn off the notebook and then remove the disk Restart the notebook and confirm that Windows starts properly Q If Windows still does not start follow the steps below to initialize the BIOS 1 2 3 4 Nn 9 Remove any disk from the floppy disk drive Remove any peripheral devices connected to the notebook Turn off the notebook and then turn it on Press the F2 key when the Sony logo appears The BIOS setup menu screen appears Press the directional arrow keys to select the Exit menu Press the arrow keys to select Get Default Values and then press Enter The message Load default configuration now appears Select Yes then press Enter Use the directional arrow keys to select Exit Save Changes and then press Enter The message Save configuration changes and exit now appears Select Yes then press Enter The notebook restarts If your notebook continues to display the message Operating system not found and Windows does not start contact Sony Customer Support o Change to Current Document Title My notebook stops responding or does not shut down It is best to shut down your notebook u
