6. 4 Start playing the desired source to record 5 Press ENTER YES on the remote at the desired point to start recording To stop Time Machine Recording Press W Note The MD deck starts storing audio data when the deck stands by for recording in step 3 and you start playing the source If less than 6 seconds have passed when you press ENTER YES on the remote Time Machine Recording starts with less than 6 seconds of audio data 6Hulpioo0y GIN i 21 Recording tips Recording for long times Marking track numbers Smart space Adjusting the recording level Recording for long times In addition to normal stereo recording this system has two long time modes LP2 and LP4 When recording in LP2 mode you can record 2 times the normal recordable time and in LP4 mode you can record 4 times the normal recordable time In addition the recordable time for monaural recording is approximately double the stereo recording time LP4 Stereo mode 4x long time recording mode achieves a long stereo recording time by use of a special compression system When placing emphasis on sound quality Stereo recording or LP2 Stereo recording 2x long time recording mode is recommended Note MDs recorded in MDLP LP2 or LP4 mode cannot be played back on a system that does not support MDLP mode In addition you cannot perform S F Edit etc for MDs recorded in MDLP mode 1 Load a recordable MD 2 Press FUNCTION repeatedly until

17. be no improvement locate the speaker system further away from the TV set Also be sure not to place objects in which magnets are attached or used near the speaker system such as audio racks TV stands and toys These may cause magnetic distortion to the picture due to their interaction with the system continued 45 uoewnojuj EUOHIPPY 46 Precautions continued Notes on MDs If you try to force the shutter open the disc may be damaged If the shutter opens close it immediately without touching the disc inside Affix the label supplied with the disc only to the specified label indentation Do not affix the label around the shutter or in other locations Note that the shape of the indentation depends on the disc Label position Shutter Wipe the disc cartridge with a dry cloth to remove dirt Do not expose the MD to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts nor leave it in a car parked in direct sunlight With the following kinds of CDs you may experience a reading failure or noise when recorded on an MD CDs with adhesive labels attached to them Irregularly shaped CDs for example heart or star shaped CDs with printed text concentrated on one side only Old CDs Scratched CDs Dirty CDs Warped CDs If the following occurs during CD play or recording a reading error may occur or noise may be produced in the recorded results The system is
18. bumped The system is placed on an uneven or soft surface The system is located near a speaker door or other source of vibration If a reading error occurs an extra track with no sound may be created This extra track can be erased by using the editing function see page 29 Notes on CDs Before playing a CD clean the CD surface with a cleaning cloth Wipe the CD from the center out Do not play a CD with tape stickers or adhesives on any of its surfaces as this may damage the system Do not use solvents Do not expose the CDs to direct sunlight or heat sources Discs with non standard shapes e g heart square star cannot be played on this system Attempting to do so may damage the system Do not use such discs Note on CD R CD RW play Discs recorded on CD R CD RW drives may not be played back because of scratches dirt recording condition or the drive s characteristics Besides the discs which are not yet finalized at the end of recording cannot be played back Notes on speakers Although the rear side of the speakers heats up during operation this is not a malfunction If you continuously use this system at a large volume the temperature of the rear side of the speakers rises considerably To avoid burning yourself do not touch the rear side of the speakers Cleaning the cabinet Clean the cabinet panel and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent s
19. changing the recording level results in poor sound quality The recording level will not return to the exact original level once the recording level has been changed even if it is returned to the original level While the timer is activated you cannot change the recording level You cannot undo the S F Edit Function even if you use the Undo Function 6bunipa aw i 35 36 Tuner Presetting radio stations The system can store a total of 30 preset stations 20 for FM and 10 for AM 1 Press FUNCTION or TUNER BAND on the remote repeatedly to select FM or AM 2 Press TUNING MODE on the remote repeatedly until AUTO appears in the display 3 Press TUNING or The frequency changes as the system scans for a station Scanning stops automatically when a station is tuned in At that time TUNED and STEREO for stereo program only appear 4 Press MENU NO on the remote 5 Press TUNING or repeatedly until Memory appears and then press ENTER YES on the remote A preset number appears in the display Perform steps 6 and 7 while the preset number is flashing 6 Press TUNING or repeatedly to select the desired preset number 7 Press ENTER YES on the remote Complete appears and then the station is stored 8 Repeat steps 1 through 7 to preset other stations To cancel presetting Press MENU NO on the remote during step 5 through 6 To tune in a weak

22. it is Extremely hot or cold Dusty or dirty Very humid Subject to vibrations Subject to direct sunlight On heat buildup Although the unit heats up during operation this is not a malfunction To prevent heat build up in the system place the system in a location with adequate ventilation and refrain from placing anything on the top of the cabinet If you continuously use this system at a large volume the cabinet temperature of the top side and bottom rises considerably To avoid burning yourself do not touch the cabinet To prevent a malfunction do not cover the ventilation hole for the cooling fan On operation If the system is brought directly from a cold place to a warm place or is placed in a very damp room moisture may condense on the lens inside the CD player or the MD deck Should this occur the system will not operate properly Remove the CD or MD and leave the system turned on for about an hour until the moisture evaporates When moving the unit remove any disc that may be in the system If you have any questions or problems concerning your system please consult your nearest Sony dealer On the speaker system Although this speaker system is magnetically shielded there may be cases where the picture on some TV sets becomes magnetically distorted In such a case turn off the power of the TV set once and after 15 to 30 minutes turn it on again If there seems to
