When referring to this manual remember DVD Indicates the feature be on some Digital Video Discs AUDIO CD Indicates the feature may be on some Audio Compact Discs VIDEO CD Indicates the feature may be on some Video Compact Discs SACD Indicates the feature may be on some Super Audio Compact Discs DVD Disc Menus Some explanations in this manual describe the DVD Disc Menus which vary among DVDs DVD Disc Menus allow you to choose different playback fea tures from those available on the DVD If the DVD has a menu access it by pressing DISC MENU on the remote control Details are on page 23 Player s System Menu Some instructions explain how to use the Player s System Menu to set up fea tures of the Player or the Disc Access the Player s System Menu by pressing SYSTEM MENU on the remote control Details are on page 21 Even if a fea ture is set up in the System Menu it will not be available if the current Disc does not include that feature Available Disc Features Features described in this manual may not be available on every Disc If the feature is not on the Disc you cannot use the Player to make the feature available An will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen if you try to access a feature that is not on the Disc Playable Discs This Player will play Digital Video Discs DVDs Video Compact Discs VCDs Super Video CDs Audio CDs and Super Audio CDs This

12. your TV to the same channel To watch television programming change TV channels at the Cable Box or Satellite Receiver ow A W N Dvo ovo vicoisaco chance Quick Disc Playback 17 STANDBY ON Many playback features and options are available on Discs Familiarize yourself with the Player and its remote as described on pages 18 22 Then see pages 23 and following to try other features Press STANDBY ON to turn on the Player The red Standby light will disappear from the front of the Player Turn on your TV Set it to the correct Video In channel This is not channel 3 or 4 as it might be for a VCR but a distinct Video In channel When using an RF modulator as described on page 9 the Video In channel is 3 or 4 You should see the Player s blue background screen on the TV If you cannot find the correct Video In channel see your TV owner s manual Press OPEN CLOSE on the Player to open the disc tray Load up to five Discs in the tray with only one Disc per slot Load Discs with the label facing up and the shiny side facing down as you place the Disc in the tray If the Disc is two sided make sure the side you want to play is facing up Press OPEN CLOSE again to close the tray Playback may begin automatically To play a specific Disc press DISC repeatedly Or press a Disc 1 2 3 4 5 button on the front of the Player If playback does not start automatically press

A or V to adjust the chosen setting When you are finished press OK to go back and select a different speaker Repeat steps 4 5 until you are satisfied with all the speaker settings Choose to increase or decrease the volume of the speaker Choose A to adjust the frequency capabilities of your speakers Select L large if the chosen speaker can handle low frequency sig nals below 120 Hz Select S small if the speaker can not reproduce low frequency signals below 120 Hz Select off if you did not connect that speaker Your choice will appear below the A bar at the bottom of the screen See your speakers literature for details on speaker capability Choose to adjust the speaker delay time You can adjust the delay time for only the Center and Surround speakers If the surround speakers are about 150 centimeters nearer to the lis tening position than the front speakers and the center speaker aligns with the front speakers no adjustment is needed If your speaker setup is different adjust the delay times First mea sure the distance in centimeters from the front speaker to the lis tening position and from the surround speaker to the listening posi tion Subtract the surround distance from the front distance then divide by 30 The result is the Surround speaker delay time in mil liseconds You may choose 0 ms 5 ms 10 ms 15 ms in the column for Surround L and Surround Press A or to choose the

CD SACD Chapter Track Selection Press gt gt briefly during playback to go to the next Track Chapter Press 14 repeatedly and quickly to step back to previous Tracks Chapters To go directly to any Track Chapter during playback 2 press the Number buttons to enter the Track Chapter number The System Menu Bar may appear briefly It will disap pear once the new Track Chapter starts to play If you enter an invalid number an X may appear in the top left corner of the TV screen The current Track or Chapter will con tinue to play Or an incorrect Track Chapter may begin to play Make sure the Track Chapter number you enter is available on the Disc PHILIPS 24 Forward and Reverse Searching Slow Motion DVD AUDIO VIDEO CD SACD Forward and Reverse Searching the normal speed press and hold 144 or PPI for about two seconds during playback To search at 32 times the nor mal speed press and hold 1 or PPI again The sound will be mute On an Audio CD or SACD to search the Disc at four times the normal speed press and hold 14 or PPI for about two seconds during playback Sound will be intermit tent To search at eight times the normal speed press and hold 144 or PPI again The sound will be mute Each press and hold of 14 or PPI switches between the slower and faster search speed 1 On a DVD or Video CD to search the Disc at four times To end the

PLAY gt For a DVD a Disc menu may appear If the Title or Chapter selections are numbered press a Number button to select an item Or press VA lt gt to select an item to play then press OK MUA W 7 To stop playback press STOP Resume Resume works with the last five DVDs Video CDs and Super Video CDs Press STOP ll to stop playback and set up Resume The next time you play the Disc play will resume at the point at which you stopped it If you press STOP twice to stop playback Resume will not be activat ed The next time you play the Disc play will start at the beginning of the Disc The Resume symbol below may appear on the TV when you reload a Disc Press PLAY while Resume appears play will resume at the point at which you stopped playback Helpful Hints e If the Disc is Locked by Access Control you must enter the four digit code or unlock the Disc Details are on pages 30 33 DVDs have a region code Your Player will not play discs that have a region code different from the region code of your Player The Player s region code is one Details are on page 8 Resume may not be available with all Discs When playing MP3 files or SACDs you will not have sound using the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks Details are on page 36 If a Video CD will not play make sure Playback Control is Off Details are on page 38 Pressing PLAY OPEN CLOSE EXCHANGE DISC or DISC 1 2 3 4 5 w

Player also will play MP3 files music tracks compressed with MPEG Audio Layer 3 technology recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable CD R or a Compact Disc Rewritable CD RVV Discs having the following logos should play on this Player DVDs must also meet the Region Code and Color System requirements described below DVD DVD Super Video CD SVCD compact Audio CD COMPACT CD R ue disie DIGITAL AUDIO A Super Audio CD compact CD RW SUPER AUDIO CD SACD compact Video CD MP3 files Region Codes DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for Region I in order to play on this Player You cannot play Discs that are labeled for other regions Look for the symbols below on your DVDs If these region symbols do not appear on your DVD you cannot play the DVD in this Player The number inside the globe refers to a region of the world Region repre sents the United States of America Canada upper regions of North America Bermuda the U S Virgin Islands and small regions near Australia A Disc encoded in a specific region format can play only on DVD Players that have the same region code So if a Disc is labeled for Region 2 you cannot play that DVD on this Player because it is a Region Player Color Systems Different color systems are available throughout the world DVD makers record DVDs in a certain color system The color system of

STANDBY ON on the front of the Player to turn on the Player The red Standby light will disappear Turn on the TV and set it to the correct Video In channel Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY IN AUDIO VIDEO or A V IN EXT or EXT2 etc These channels often are near channel 00 See your TV owner s manual for details Or go to your lowest TV channel then change channels down until you see the Player s blue screen saver on the TV Unless you are using an RF modulator the Video In channel is not channel 3 or 4 as it might be when using a VCR Turn on the Stereo and set it to the correct Audio In chan nel or sound source Refer to the Stereo s manual Set the Player s Digital output Details are on page 43 Helpful Hints If your Digital Output setting does not match your Stereo s capabilities the Stereo may produce a strong distorted sound or no sound at all You will have six channel digital surround sound with this con nection only if your Stereo has a digital multichannel decoder Your Stereo must support 2 Dolby Digital Digital Theater System DTS Check the Stereo s manual When playing MP3 files or SACDs you will not have sound if you use the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks You may use S Video or Component Video connections instead for higher picture quali ty These options must be avail able on your TV Details are on pages 11 12 Hookups cont d 15
