3. z SPEAKERS IMPEDANCE 4 8 OHMS D Las RCH m ma ch gm marantz MODEL NO PM 15S1 SERIAL NO 20 TROUBLESHOOTING If you experience trouble with the PM 15S1 make the below checks before thinking the worst Improper operation can cause the PM 15S1 to behave in a way that makes you think something is wrong with the equipment when actually not If the trouble cannot be fixed after making the below checks contact the place of purchase your nearest Marantz dealer our customer service center or our repair service center Power does notturn ON 1 Is the power cable securely plugged into a power outlet Nothing is heard from the speakers 1 Aren t the SPEAKERS buttons on the front panel in the OFF position 2 Isn tthe attenuation feature ATT active 3 Isn tthere trouble in the input source selected from the INPUT SELECTOR knob on the front panel 4 Are you using the player replaying device correctly 5 Are connection cables and speaker cables securely connected 6 Volume may have been muted by a protective circuit that tripped Try adjusting the volume level again 7 Ifan error message is displayed correctly set the ID number as indicated in the table under Error Messages Volume level differs between left and right channels The volume level setting may differ between the left and right channels Try trimming the volume level again Stereo sound is notheard from the speakers

The operating mode switch on the rear panel may be set to BI AMP Shut power OFF set the switch to STEREO and then reactive the power Power must be activated after the operating mode switch is set for the setting to be active Record player audio is not heard or contains a lot of noise 1 Is the PHONO MC button on the front panel set to the type of cartridge you are using 2 Are connection cables securely connected 3 Is the grounding wire from the record player connected to the PHONO GND terminal 4 Is the cartridge properly connected to the tone arm B About Protective Circuits The PM 15S1 is equipped with protective circuits to protect the amplifier circuits and speaker system against damage If a protective circuit trips the sound is instantly muted In this case PROTECT flashes on the display panel At Power ON Forabout8 seconds after poweris activated a protective circuit trips and mutes the sound to give amplifier circuits time to stabilize Once the amplifier circuits stabilize the protective circuit releases and audio is enabled n the Event of Overcurrent A protective circuit trips if current of a certain level is detected which can happen if excessive signal flow is input to the amplifier or if the 1551 is connected to a speaker system of less than 4 impedance A protective circuit can also trip if a speaker cable accidentally shorts In these cases PROTECT fl
5. but it can be set to 20 dB 40 dB or ee 1 When the ATT button on either the PM 15S1 or the remote controller is pressed ATT flashes on the display and the volume level is reduced When the ATT button is pressed again or the volume is increased decreased from the controls the mode is canceled and the original volume level is restored 2 When the volume level is at muted and the ATT button is pressed the below display appears for about 3 seconds and attenuation is not applied B How to Set Attenuation Level Attenuation level cannot be set from the remote controller 1 Press and hold the ATT button on the 1551 for 2 seconds or longer The attenuation level will appear on the display DISPLAY button 2 Setthe attenuation level The setting changes with each press of the ATT button on the PM 15S 1 3 3 When the desired attenuation level setting appears on the display leave it unchanged for approximately 2 seconds or longer to enter the setting Once entered the display returns to the volume level indication HOW TO OPERATE THE SIDE ILLUMINATION LAMP The illumination lamp has an always ON mode and an always OFF mode In the always ON mode the illumination lamp turns ON OFF in sync with the display 1 With the illumination lamp lit press and hold the DISPLAY button for 3 seconds or longer The illumination
6. 3 PM 15S1s To turn power to multiple FCBS connected PM 15S1s ON OFF activate power in the order of lowest to highest ID number and deactivate power in order of highest to lowest ID number Master PM 15S1 ID1 Slave PM 15S1 o D2 Slave PM 15S1 lD 3 Slave PM 15S1 ID4 16 FCBS CONNECTION WITHA PM 11S1 The PM 15S1 can be made into a multiple channel system by connecting to the high end PM 11S1 over a FCBS connection However because the PM 1151 is more sophisticated than the PM 15S 1 observe the following conditions in completing the FCBS connection between a PM 15S1 and a PM 11S1 e Only one PM 11S1 may be used whereas up to a maximum of three PM 15S1s can be connected The one PM 11S1 must be the master unit of ID 1 while the PM 15S1s must be slave units with an ID of 2 to 4 Fora connection example see Connection Example 2 on pg 6 In that example the PM 15S1 used for the front left and right channels is replaced with a PM 11S1 so improved sound quality can be expected from the front channels See also the instruction manual of the 1151 That same example is for a 5 1 channel system butto use the system as a 2 channel stereo turn OFF power to the PM 15S 1s of IDs 2 and 3 As such the PM 11S1 can be used on its own ABOUT THE BI AMP MODE The PM 15S1 is equipped with a bi amp mode to enable a complete bi amp connection using two PM 15S 1s This comple

9. in the OFF position therefore setthe button in the ON posi tion to control bass and treble from these buttons 6 PHONES J ack This jack is for connecting headphones with a standard stereo plug To listen with headphones turn speaker out put OFF by setting the SPEAKERS button 0 in the OFF position Infrared Receptor Window This is the receptor of control signals sentfrom the included RC 11PMS1 remote controller Point the remote controller towards this window to properly send signals DISPLAY Button This button turns the display and illumination lamp ON and OFF If the display is outand the VOLUME knob or other control is operated the display lights up It will automatically go out 3 seconds after the operation has been completed 9 TONE Button This button turns the bass and treble tone control ON and OFF When tone control is ON the center of the button is lita blue color SPEAKERS Button This button turns output to the speakers connected to the SPEAKER SYSTEMS outputterminals on the rear panel ON and OFF When speaker output is ON the center of the button is lit a blue color To listen with headphones turn speaker output OFF ATT Button This button attenuates volume with one press of the but ton When pressed ATT flashes on the display and the volume is reduced If pressed again the mode is canceled and the original volume level is restored Attenuation level is set to 20 dB when the PM 15S1 is sh
10. one or more buttons to be held down which will cause the batteries to run down 13 BASIC OPERATION PLAYBACK To explain how to play back input sources representative examples are given with an Super Audio CD player and analog record player Before starting either procedure check the component is correctly connected to the PM 15S1 1 2 n e Disc Playback on an Super Audio CD Player Press the power ON OFF switch of the Super Audio CD player to activate power to it Press the POWER ON OFF switch of the PM 15S1 to activate power to it Approximately 8 seconds after power has been activated the muting turns OFF and audio output is enabled When using multiple PM 15S1s connected by FCBS turn power ON in the order of lowest to highest ID number starting from ID 1 Select the input source from the INPUT SELECTOR knob on the PM 15S1 or the input selector buttons 1 of the remote controller To use the speakers connected to the SPEAKER SYSTEMS terminals press the SPEAKERS button 0 on the PM 15S1 Load a disc into the Super Audio CD player and press the play button to start playback Adjust the volume level from the VOLUME knob on the PM 15S1 or the VOLUME A Y buttons 6 of the remote controller Adjust bass treble as desired from the BASS and TREBLE knobs 5 Be sure to first set the TONE button 9 on the PM 15S1 or the TONE button 4 on the remote controller in the ON position You c
11. set the volume level of the left channel Press the button to set the right channel volume level When the right side 0 0 starts flashing trimming is activated for the right channel volume level Press the A and V buttons to set the volume level of the right channel To trim the volume level of the ID 2 slave P M 15S 1 press the TRIM button again and set volume level as in steps 1 3 After that pressing the TRIM button again allows you to trim volume level with ID 3 slave PM 15S1 and so forth When finished with volume level trimming press the EXIT button HOW TO USE AND SET FEATURES HOW TO SET ID INPUT SELECTOR knob DISPLAY button If using the PM 155 1 by itself as a stereo amplifier set the ID to 0 When the PM 15S1 is shipped from the factory the ID is setto 0 When the ID is set to a number other than 0 the PM 15S1 cannot be used for standalone operation The ID number of the PM 15S1 appears on the display for about 3 seconds after power is activated POWER ON OFF button When multiple PM 15S 1s are connected a unique ID number must be set for each one in order to distinguish between them The 1551 that centrally controls the other PM 15S 1s takes ID 1 The PM 15S1 with ID 1 is called the master The other PM 15S 1s that synchronize with the master are called slaves and take IDs 2 4 ID numbers must not be the sa

For use of Remote controller Loading batteries Before using the supplied remote control unit for the first time load the batteries in the remote control unit The batteries provided are used to verify the operations ofthe remote control unit only 1 Remove the battery cover which is found on the back side of the remote control unit 2 Load the two new size AAA batteries inside the battery compartment while taking care to align their polarities correctly with the polarity markings with and with 3 Push the cover on the back side in the direction of the arrow to close Bi Operatable range of Remote controller Operate the remote control unit RC 11PMS 1 within a distance of approx 5 m from the infrared signal reception window remote sensor on the front of the PM 15S 1 Approx 5m Remote control unit RC 11PMS 1 Caution e Do notallow direct sunlight an inverter fluorescent light or other strong source of light to shine onto the player s infrared signal reception window remote sensor Otherwise the operation of the remote control unit may be disabled Bearin mind that operating the remote control unit may cause other devices operated by infrared rays to be operated by mistake The remote control unit cannot be operated if the space between the controller and the player s remote sensor is obstructed Do notplace any objects on top of the remote control unit Doing so may cause
