This section provides information about the following Restoring the preloaded system Service Web site When the latest maintenance diskette and the system program service diskette become available they will be posted on http www lenovo com think spm Restoring the preloaded system If the data on a hard disk drive is damaged or accidentally erased you can restore the software that was shipped with the computer This software includes the pre installed operating system applications and device drivers To restore the pre installed software you can use either the Product Recovery program or a recovery CD j Ordering the recovery CD When the hard disk drive is replaced because of a failure no Product Recovery program is on the new hard disk In this case you must use the Product Recovery CD for the computer Order the recovery CD and the hard disk drive at the same time so that you can recover the new hard disk drive with the pre installed software when they arrive For information on which CD to order see Recovery CDs on page 138 The Product Recovery program is in the service partition a section of the hard disk drive that is not displayed by Windows Explorer Attention All of the files on the primary hard disk partition usually drive C will be lost in the recovery process Be sure to back up copies of the files you have saved on your drive C before you begin Creating a Recovery

The MTM portion of the machine label is a 4 digit MT and 3 digit model where model a fixed part number not CTO Example 1829 F1U Also PEW eSupport and the HMM will list these products under the same fixed model number FRU identification for CTO CMV and GAV products There are three information resources to identify which FRUs are used to support CTO CMV and GAV products These sources are PEW eSupport and the HMM SES PEW PEW is the primary source for identifying FRU part numbers and FRU descriptions for the key commodities for CTO CMV and GAV products at a MT serial number level An example of key commodities are hard disk drives system boards microprocessors Liquid Crystal Displays LCDs and memory Remember All CTO and CMV products are loaded in PEW under the 4 digit MT and 3 digit model where model CTO Example 1829 CTO GAVs are loaded in PEW under the 4 digit MT and 3 digit model where model a fixed part number not CTO Example 1829 F1U PEW can be accessed at the following Web site Click on MACHINE LOOKUP followed by WARRANTY INFORMATION Input the MT and the Serial number and the list of key commodities will be returned in the PEW record under COMPONENT INFORMATION Business Partners using Eclaim will access PEW when performing Entitlement Lookup Business Partners will enter Loc ID MT and Serial and the key commodities will be returned in the Ecl

If possible save all the files and shut down the operating system 2 Turn off the computer 34 MT 2369 2370 2371 2372 2382 2386 Related service information 3 Turn on the computer Watch the display carefully When the following message is displayed press the blue Access IBM button to open the Access IBM Predesktop Area To interrupt normal startup press the blue Access IBM button 4 Double click Recover to factory contents 5 Follow the instructions on the screen When the recovery process finishes the computer will restart with the pre installed operating system drivers and software Recovering the hard disk using the recovery CD You can delete the Access IBM Predesktop Area by going into BIOS F1 at IBM Splash Screen and then choosing Security IBM gt Predesktop Area gt Disabled This will make the Service Partition area available to FDISK If you choose Disabled the following warning appears Attention If you select Disabled the IBM Predesktop Area will be visible and can be reclaimed by the OS Once the area is overwritten by OS tools it can t be used with Normal or Secure and you will need to obtain a Recovery CD to retrieve original HDD Please confirm that you wish to select Disabled FDISK will not delete the Access IBM Predesktop Area unless you do this because it is not visible You would have to use bootkil2 psa to completely wipe the drive j Ordering the recovery CD When
