Corporate Evaluators Guide 147 Troubleshooting and Maintenance Configuring the Computer Configuring the Computer Two tools help you configure your computer s operation the BIOS Setup utility and HP TopTools To run the BIOS Setup utility The BIOS Basic Input and Output System Setup utility enables you to make changes to the computer s system configuration and to tailor the operation of your computer to your individual work needs The settings made in BIOS Setup generally control the computer s hardware and so greatly affect how the computer operates 1 2 3 Click Start Shut Down or Turn Off Computer Restart When the HP logo appears press F2 to enter BIOS Setup The pointing devices are not active in BIOS Setup so you will need to use the keyboard to navigate e Press the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to move among menus e Press the UP and DOWN arrow keys to move among parameters in a menu e Press F5 or F6 to move through values for the current parameter or press ENTER to change a setting After you select the options you want press F10 or use the Exit menu to exit BIOS Setup If the settings cause a conflict between devices during reboot the system prompts you to run BIOS Setup and marks the conflicting settings The following tables describe BIOS settings for the BIOS version at publication If your BIOS is a different version some settings may differ from those shown 148 Corporate Eval

Troubleshooting Your Computer LAN Problems If the built in network adapter doesn t connect to the LAN e Check all cables and connections Try connecting at a different network station if available e Ifthe green light next to the LAN port does not light the LAN cable may not be connected to the network or the network may be down Try connecting a different computer to the cable e Make sure the internal LAN adapter is enabled in BIOS Setup See To run the BIOS Setup utility on page 148 e Make sure the LAN cable is Category 3 4 or 5 for 10Base T operation or Category 5 for 100Base TX operation Maximum cable length is 100 meters 330 feet e Click Start Help or Help and Support and use the Networking troubleshooter e Open the hardware Device Manager click Start Settings Control Panel System Windows 2000 or Start Control Panel Performance and Maintenance System Windows XP If the network interface is disabled try to enable it If it has a conflict try disabling another device If you can t browse the Network Neighborhood or My Network Places e For Windows 2000 try installing NetBEUI network protocol In Control Panel open Network and Dial up Connections e Click Start Find Find Computer Windows 2000 or Start Search Computers or People Windows XP to look for a computer If you can t log in to Netware servers e Ifa Netware server is using IPX SPX protocol you may need to force your

Your computer contains several software programs that work with your modem e Internet Explorer for browsing the World Wide Web e Outlook Express for sending and receiving e mail messages e Windows XP Fax Console or Windows 2000 fax software for sending and receiving faxes The modem is a high speed 56 Kbps modem For best performance you can connect to any Internet Service Provider ISP or modem network that has V 90 or V 92 interoperable modems Check with your ISP for a list of telephone numbers that support V 90 or V 92 Note that the maximum speed for faxing is 14 4 Kbps Even though the modem is capable of downloading at 56 Kbps your ISP or modem network may not operate at this speed or support this technology Please check with your service provider for information on its capabilities Furthermore download transmission rates depend on the condition of the telephone line 58 Corporate Evaluator s Guide CAUTION CAUTION Modem and Network Connections Using the Modem To connect the modem To reduce the risk of fire use only No 26 AWG or larger telecommunications line cord to connect the modem to the telephone wall jack 1 Check that the telephone line is an analog line sometimes called a data line You must not use a digital line 2 Connect a telephone cord with an RJ 11 plug into a telephone jack If the plug on the phone cord doesn t fit the jack you may need to use an adapter 3 Plug the other end of
