1. The computer screen is blank If the screen is blank but the computer is on and the power light is on the computer may not be set to display the image on the computer screen To transfer the image to the computer screen press the f4 action key Software is functioning abnormally If the software is unresponsive or responds abnormally follow these suggestions e Restart the computer by selecting Start gt Shut down gt Restart If you cannot restart the computer using this procedure refer to the next section The computer is on but not responding on page 95 e Runa virus scan For information about using the antivirus resources on the computer refer to Securing your computer and information on page 74 94 Appendix A Troubleshooting and support The computer is on but not responding If the computer is on but is not responding to software or keyboard commands try the following emergency shutdown procedures in the sequence provided Z CAUTION Emergency shutdown procedures result in the loss of unsaved information e Press ctrit alt delete and then click the Power button e Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds e Disconnect the computer from external power and remove the battery The computer is unusually warm It is normal for the computer to feel warm to the touch while it is in use But if the computer feels unusually warm it may be overheating because a vent is blocked If you suspect that the c

4. 8 Tighten the screw 3 on the memory module compartment cover 9 Replace the battery 10 Reconnect external power and external devices 11 Turn on the computer 64 Chapter9 Drives Using optical drives Optical drives include the following e CD e DVD e Blu ray BD Identifying the installed optical drive A Select Start gt Computer A list of all drives installed in your computer including your optical drive is displayed Inserting an optical disc 1 Turn on the computer 2 Press the release button 1 on the drive bezel to release the disc tray 3 Pull out the tray 2 4 Hold the disc by the edges to avoid touching the flat surfaces and position the disc label side up over the tray spindle Ey NOTE If the tray is not fully accessible tilt the disc carefully to position it over the spindle 5 Gently press the disc 3 down onto the tray spindle until the disc snaps into place 6 Close the disc tray Ey NOTE After you insert a disc a short pause is normal If you have not selected a media player an AutoPlay dialog box opens It prompts you to select how you want to use the media content Using optical drives 65 Removing an optical disc There are 2 ways to remove a disc depending on whether the disc tray opens normally or not When the disc tray opens normally 1 Press the release button 1 on the drive bezel to release the disc tray and then gently pull out the tray 2 un

NOTE The battery release latch automatically returns to its original position 3 Pivot the battery 2 upward and remove it from the computer 40 Chapter 7 Power management Shutting down the computer A CAUTION Unsaved information is lost when the computer shuts down The Shut down command closes all open programs including the operating system and then turns off the display and computer Shut down the computer under any of the following conditions e When you need to replace the battery or access components inside the computer e When the computer will be unused and disconnected from external power for an extended period Although you can shut down the computer with the power button the recommended procedure is to use the Windows Shut down command Ey NOTE If the computer is in the Sleep state or in Hibernation you must first exit Sleep or Hibernation before shutdown is possible 1 Save your work and close all open programs 2 Select Start gt Shut down If the computer is unresponsive and you are unable to use the preceding shutdown procedures try the following emergency procedures in the sequence provided e Press ctrl alt delete and then click the Power button e Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds e Disconnect the computer from external power and remove the battery Setting power options Using power saving states The computer has two power saving states that are enabled at the

When installing or modifying system software When writing information to a CD a DVD or a BD select models only When running Disk Defragmenter When performing a backup or recovery When you connect the computer to external AC power the following events occur The battery begins to charge If the computer is turned on the power meter icon in the notification area changes appearance When you disconnect external AC power the following events occur The computer switches to battery power The display brightness is automatically decreased to save battery life Using external AC power 49 Testing an AC adapter Test the AC adapter if the computer exhibits any of the following symptoms when it is connected to AC power e The computer does not turn on e The display does not turn on e The power lights are off To test the AC adapter 1 Shut down the computer 2 Remove the battery from the computer 3 Connect the AC adapter to the computer and then plug it into an AC outlet 4 Turn on the computer e If the power lights turn on the AC adapter is working properly e fthe power lights remain off check the connection from the AC adapter to the computer and the connection from the AC adapter to the AC outlet to make sure the connections are secure e fthe connections are secure and the power lights remain off the AC adapter is not functioning and should be replaced Contact customer support for information on obt

10. factory Sleep and Hibernation When Sleep is initiated the power lights blink and the screen clears Your work is saved to memory letting you exit Sleep faster than exiting Hibernation If the computer is in the Sleep state for an extended period or if the battery reaches a critical battery level while in the Sleep state the computer initiates Hibernation When Hibernation is initiated your work is saved to a hibernation file on the hard drive and the computer turns off Z CAUTION To reduce the risk of possible audio and video degradation loss of audio or video playback functionality or loss of information do not initiate Sleep or Hibernation while reading from or writing to a disc or an external media card Ey NOTE You cannot initiate any type of networking connection or perform any computer functions while the computer is in the Sleep state or in Hibernation Shutting down the computer 41 Initiating and exiting Sleep The system is set at the factory to initiate Sleep after a period of inactivity when running on battery power or on external power Power settings and timeouts can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel With the computer on you can initiate Sleep in any of the following ways e Briefly press the power button e Close the display e Select Start click the arrow next to the Shut down button and then click Sleep To exit Sleep e Briefly press the power button e Ifthe display is
