The following numbers correspond to the numbers in the drawing on the previous page 1 Operation mode switch SCSI ID switch Power connector On Off switch SCSI connectors Used to choose the operating mode Refer to Setting the Operation Mode in this section Used to set the SCSI ID Connection for power cord Used to switch power on or off Two connectors that allow SCSI devices to be daisy chained If no other SCSI device ex ists on the chain after the optical drive a ter minator must be connected to the unused connector 1 5 Setting the SCSI ID Follow these steps to set the SCSI ID Caution Before disconnecting power to any device on the SCSI bus make sure the bus is inactive Switching off power while the SCSI bus is active can result in data loss or indeterminate bus states 1 Make sure the power to the drive is switched off 2 Locate the SCSI ID switch on the rear panel of the disk drive Refer to Figure 1 1 Rear Panel Features 3 To set the SCSI ID push the appropriate button with a small screwdriver or the point of a pen the button above the operation mode window decreases the number by one the button below the operation mode window increases the number by one Note If you change the SCSI ID you must power cycle the drive so that the host recognizes the new ID 1 6 Setting the Operation Mode The mode selection switch designates operating mo

Drive This chapter explains the features used to operate the optical disk drive Figure 3 1 Front Panel Features 3 2 Identifying Front Panel Features The following list of features corresponds to the numbers in Figure 3 1 1 Disk slot 2 Activity indicator 3 Power indicator 4 Fject tool opening 5 Eject button A slot for inserting optical disks Remains lit while the drive is loading or un loading a disk during the powerup selftest se guence and any time the drive is being accessed Remains lit while the power is on An access hole for the eject tool In an emer gency such as a power outage the disk can be manually ejected by inserting the eject tool into this opening Read Manually Eject ing Disks on the next page Pressed to eject the disk from the drive The disk does not eject if a SCSI Prevent Allow Media Removal command has been issued or if power to the drive is off 3 3 Manually Ejecting Disks The optical disk drive does not automatically eject an optical disk if a power failure occurs An eject tool is shipped with the optical disk drive to use for manually ejecting a disk Follow these steps to manually remove a disk from the optical drive 1 Disconnect all power to the drive 2 Insert the eject tool into the small round hole in the front panel of the drive push the eject tool firmly and the disk will eject Note After ejecting a disk the d

13. and the data cannot be altered or erased If you have a need for data security and audit trails write once disks may be your best disk choice Both rewritable and write once disks come in two sector sizes 1024 bytes sector and 512 bytes sector The sector size you choose depends upon what type of Operating system and software you are running on your computer Refer to your computer system documentation or your optical driver software documentation to see which format is supported on your computer The information is probably listed under optical disk sector size or optical disk format Note Do not use write once disks in a computer system that does not support write once disks Check your computer system reference manuals to determine the disk types that are supported 2 3 Labeling Optical Disks Make it a practice to label your optical disks Adhesive labels are provided with each disk You can use the following labeling suggestions date of format or initialization disk owner group department etc storage purpose backup old version of operating system etc Apply the label to the optical disk in an area that does not interfere with the movement of the metal shutter On side A of an optical disk the correct label position is just to the left of the metal shutter on side B it is just to the right of the metal shutter See the figure below for proper label placement Caution If a label is applied incorrectl
14. de of the 2600fx e Select O to operate the optical disk drive as an optical memory device Select 1 to operate the optical disk drive as a direct access device Hewlett Packard recommends operating the optical disk drive as an optical memory device The direct access mode can be used with systems that do not recognize optical memory devices To change the operation mode push the appropriate button with a small screwdriver or the point of a pen the button above the operation mode window decreases the number by one the button below the operation mode window increases the number by one Note If you change the operation mode you must power cycle the drive so that the host recognizes the new mode 1 7 Connecting to the Host Computer When you are ready to connect the optical disk drive to your host computer note the following cautions Then complete the steps below Caution Perform a full system backup prior to connecting the optical disk drive to the host com puter for full data protection Verify that the bus is inactive before disconnecting power to any device on the SCSI bus Shutting off any device while the SCSI bus is active can result in data loss or indeterminate bus states Remove inserted disks before moving the drive Damage to the optical mechanism can occur if the drive is moved or bumped while the power is off and a disk is inserted 1 Make sure the power is switched off on both

19. oftware drivers are loaded properly If the above actions do not solve the problem contact a service representative Refer to Appendix A for a list of Hewlett Packard offices Using Optical Disks Using Optical Disks The optical disks that you use in the optical disk drive are an integral part of the storage process This chapter provides information on the following choosing an optical disk labeling an optical disk maintaining an optical disk e write protecting an optical disk Note For top performance and reliability Hewlett Packard recommends HP labeled optical disks that have been fully tested for use with HP s optical products Purchase these disks through any HP authorized dealer or order them through HP Direct See Supplies and Accessories Appendix A for ordering information 2 2 Choosing Optical Disks Optical disks are available in three capacities 650 Mbytes 1 3 Gbytes and 2 6 Gbytes The optical disk drive can read from and write to both 1 3 Gbyte disks and 2 6 Gbyte disks The drive can read from but not write to 650 Mbyte disks To receive maximum storage capacity you should choose 2 6 Gbyte optical disks Two types of optical disks are available rewritable disks and write once disks To choose which type of disk to use consider these points e rewritable optical disks data can be repeatedly written and erased write once optical disks data can be written only once
