ANING THE STRING TRIMMER A WARNING Battery units do not have to be plugged into an electrical outlet therefore they are always in operating condition To prevent serious personal injury always remove the battery pack and take extra precautions and care when performing maintenance cleaning or servicing the unit A WARNING To prevent serious personal injury remove the battery pack before servicing cleaning or removing material from the unit Remove the battery pack Clean the unit using a damp cloth with a mild detergent Do not use any strong detergents on the plastic housing or the handle They can be damaged by certain aromatic oils such as pine and lemon and by solvents such as kerosene Moisture can cause a shock hazard Wipe off any moisture with a soft dry cloth Use a small brush or the air discharge of a small vacuum cleaner brush to clean the air vents on the battery pack housing and motor housing Keep the air vents free of obstructions STORING THE STRING TRIMMER Clean the string trimmer thoroughly before storing Store the string trimmer in a dry well ventilated place that is inaccessible to children Keep away from corrosive agents such as garden chemicals and de icing salts Store and charge your batteries in a cool area Temperatures above or below normal room tem perature will shorten battery pack life Never store batteries in a discharged condition Wait for battery pack to cool and charge

17. enetrating oils etc come in contact with plastic parts They contain chemicals that may damage weaken or destroy plastics CUTTING LINE REPLACEMENT The cutting line may be replaced by either rewinding the existing spool or installing a convenient prewound spool REWINDING THE EXISTING SPOOL See Figure 13 Remove the battery pack from the string trimmer Press in the tabs on each side of the spool cap e Remove the spool cap and spool Discard any remaining line on the spool NOTE If the spring falls off the spool housing during this procedure reinstall the spring before installing the spool and spool cap nspectthe string head for damaged or worn parts andclean thoroughly e Using approximately 10 feet 3 m of new cutting line insert one end of the line into the slot on the spool Ensure the end of the line is pushed all the way towards the inner side of slot NOTE No more than 1 8 in of the line is to protrude from the slot Wind the line in even and tight layers onto the spool Line should be wound in the direction of the arrow indicated on the spool Unwind approximately 4 in 102 mm of the line from the spool Hold the line and spool firmly to keep it from unwinding then place the spool cap onto the spool e Holding the spool cap and spool by the bump knob place into the spool housing and insert cutting line into the opening in spool housing NOTE Tabs on the spool cap should be align
18. ent damage to battery pack remove battery pack from charger immediately if no LED comes on Return battery pack and charger to your nearest Homelite Authorized Service Center for checking or replacing Also if you are remov ing battery pack from charger and no LEDs are on return both battery pack and charger to your nearest Homelite Authorized Service Center Do not insert another battery pack into charger A damaged charger may damage a battery pack CHARGING YOUR BATTERY PACK The battery pack for this unit has been shipped in a low charge condition to prevent possible problems Therefore you should charge it prior to use NOTE Batteries will not reach full charge the first time they are charged Allow several cycles trimming followed by recharging for them to fully charge TO CHARGE Charge battery pack only with the charger pro vided Make sure power supply is normal household voltage 120 volts 60 Hz AC only e Connect charger to power supply Place battery pack in charger See Figure 6 Align raised rib on battery pack with groove in charger e When charger is properly connected red light will turn on Press down on battery pack to be sure contacts on battery pack engage properly with contacts in charger Page 9 Normally the yellow and green lights on the charger will come on This indicates charger is in control charge mode and should switch to fast charge mode within 5 minutes When charg
19. er is in fast charge mode the yellow and green lights will go off and the red light will come on If after a period of 15 minutes the yellow and green lights remain on remove the battery pack wait 1 minute and reinsert battery pack in charger If the yellow and green lights continue to remain on an additional 15 minutes the battery pack is damaged and will not accept charge When your battery pack becomes fully charged the red light will turn off and the green light will turn on After normal usage 1 hour of charge time is required to be fully charged A minimum charge time of 1 to 1 1 2 hours is required to recharge a completely discharged battery pack The battery pack will become slightly warm to the touch while charging This is normal and does not indicate a problem DO NOT place charger in an area of extreme heat or cold It will work best at normal room tempera ture BATTERY PACK BATTERY CHARGER RED LIGHT GREEN YELLOw LIGHT LIGHT Fig 6 OPERATION IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RECHARGING HOT BATTERY PACK When using your string trimmer continuously the batteries in your battery pack will become hot You should let a hot battery pack cool down for approxi mately 30 minutes before attempting to recharge NOTE This situation only occurs when continuous use of your string trimmer causes the batteries to become hot It does not occur under normal circumstances Refer to CHARGING BATTERY PACK fo

26. r normal recharging of batteries If the charger does not charge your battery pack under normal circumstances return both the battery pack and charger to your nearest Homelite Authorized Service Center for electrical check IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RECHARGING COOL BATTERY PACK If battery pack is below normal temperature range the green LED on charger will come on Allow battery pack to reach normal temperature then the red LED will come on NOTE Refer to CHARGING BATTERY PACK for normal recharging of batteries If the charger does not charge your battery pack under normal circumstances return both the battery pack and charger to your nearest Homelite Authorized Service Center for electrical check TO INSTALL BATTERY PACK Place the battery pack in the string trimmer Align raised rib on battery pack with groove in string trimmer s battery port See Figure 7 sure the latches on each side of the battery pack snap in place and that battery pack is secured in string trimmer before beginning operation BATTERY LATCHES BATTERY PACK Fig 7 TO REMOVE BATTERY PACK Locate latches on side of battery pack and depress both sides to release the battery pack from the string trimmer See Figure 7 Remove battery pack from the string trimmer A CAUTION When placing battery pack in your string trimmer be sure raised rib on battery pack aligns with groove in string trimmer s battery port and latche
