For more information visit www desat 108795 01M VENTING INSTALLATION Continued Vent terminations must be located in accordance with height and proximity rules of NFPA No 54 or CAN CGA B149 These rules apply to vents at 12 in diameter or less and require a minimum height in accordance with the roof pitch and a minimum of 8 ft distance from a vertical wall or obstruction see Figure 11 If venting horizontally through a side wall becomes necessary a listed thimble approved for use with B type vent must be used Check with your local codes before venting through a side wall Some codes areas allow the use of existing B type vent systems if the system is at or above the recommended diameter of the flue in this case 6 The flue connection must be made using listed B type connectors and the existing system must be code inspected for damage and proper installation Itis not recommended that this appliance be common vented with an existing gas burning appliance However if it becomes necessary to common vent this appliance the venting system must be sized and configured in accordance with the common venting guides Appendix G of the current National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 NFPA 54 and in Canada with CAN CGA B149 Note Before connecting this appliance to an existing vent system or a common venting system consult with your local architect planner or building official Lowest Listed Discharge Vent Cap Openin

6. 40 Pilot For more information visit 108795 01M OPERATING FIREPLACE Continued MN OPTIONAL HAND HELD Hm REMOTE OPERATION Note The receiver and hand held remote control kit must be purchased separately see Accessories page 27 Follow instal lation instructions on page 10 of this manual 1 After lighting let pilot flame burn for about one minute Turn control knob to ON position Slide the selector switch to the REMOTE position Note The burner may light if hand held remote was on when selector switch was last turned off You can now turn the burner on and off with the hand held remote control unit IMPORTANT Do not leave the selector switch in the RE MOTE or ON position when the pilot is not lit This will drain the battery 2 Press the control button on the hand held remote to turn the burner on Press the control button again to turn burner off see Figure 41 3 To Lock press both buttons on remote control until light stops flashing Remote is now locked If the fire is on it will be turned off automatically In the locked state the light will not light up when any button is pressed 4 To Unlock press both buttons together on remote control until light stops flashing The remote is now unlocked Control Button Turns Burners On and Off Figure 41 On Off Hand Held Remote Control Unit GHRCB rmation visit www desatech com 108795 01M INSPECTING BURNERS Check pilot flame pattern and b

No gas or low gas pressure 4 If using propane LP gas no propane LP gas in tank 1 Check for spark at the electrode and pilot if no spark and electrode wire is properly connected replace ignitor 2 Using a match light pilot If pilot lights turn off pilot and trigger the red button again If pilot lights an improper gas air mixture caused the improper lighting and a longer purge period is recom mended If pilot will not light check gap at electrode and pilot Gap should be 1 8 to have a strong spark If okay replace pilot 3 A Check remote shut off valves from fireplace Usually there is a valve near the fireplace and sometimes there is a valve near the main There can be more than one 1 valve between the fireplace and main B Low pressure can be caused by a va riety of situations such as bent line too narrow diameter of pipe or even low line pressure Check for kinked lines If none consult with plumber or gas supplier 4 Check propane LP supply and contact local propane LP supplier Fireplace produces a clicking ticking noise just after burner is lit or shut off 1 Metal expanding while heating or con tracting while cooling 1 This is common with most fireplaces If noise is excessive contact qualified service person For more information visit www desatec 108795 01M TROUBLESHOOTING Continued building WARNING If you smell gas e Shut off gas supply e Do not try to ligh

19. around the outer surround Any gaps between the nailing flanges and the framing should be sealed with noncombustible insulation or caulking If the appliance is mounted on a raised platform it must be a con tinuous surface and not on blocks without a solid surface This will prevent the entry of cold air by means of conduction through the total bottom of the appliance see Figure 34 Side Side Framing Framing Caulk Here Pack Insulation Figure 34 Sealing Between Appliance and Framing For more information visit www d 108795 01M INSTALLATION Continued INSTALLING OPTIONAL GLASS DOOR ACCESSORY A CAUTION Use only glass doors certified for use with this appliance Note Glass door may be heavy for some individuals If this is the case please request help from someone else The M36 VM36 M42 and VM42 B vent fireplaces are approved for use with optional bi fold glass doors see Accessories page 27 The glass panels may be ordered and installed anytime after the fireplace installation is complete Follow these steps to install left and right panels 1 With the handle at the bottom completely fold the panel on its hinges 2 With the handle facing the center of the firebox opening insert the lower pivot pin on the glass door panel into the hole in pivot plate on the bottom edge of the fireplace opening see Figure 35 3 Keeping the folded door tilted slide the upper two pins into the gu

41. quipped with a vent safety shutoff switch which will shut down the appliance in the case of a venting problem Do not bypass the vent safety switch Ifthe appliance should shut down contact a qualified installer service agency or your gas supplier to have the vent inspected before operating Check this area along the entire top edge of the fireplace opening Smoke or flame should be drawn into the appliance opening 3 Figure 12 Checking for Spillage DESN INSTALLATION WALL SWITCH INSTALLATION The installation of a wall switch allows you to activate the gas control valve without the normal household electricity since the valve operates on millivolt current supplied by the heat generated by the thermopile To install the wall switch 1 Remove the front refractory access panel by lifting up and angling out of the firebox opening see Figure 13 2 Use wire and connectors provided Attach red wire to terminal marked TH TP on control valve Attach white wire to blade connector on open end of safety circuit wiring see Wiring Diagram page 18 Note If any of the original wire from the unit control must be re placed use the same type or a higher rated wire 25 ft maximum length A WARNING Do not wire remote wall switch to main power supply Standard 120v household current 3 Locate wall switch in a convenient location
