Tools USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS Repair or replace damaged cords EXTENSION CORDS Double insulated tools have 2 wire cords and can be used with 2 wire or 3 wire extension cords Only round jacketed extension cords should be used and we recommend that they be listed by Underwriters Laboratories U L If the extension will be used out side the cord must be suitable for outdoor use Any cord marked as outdoor can also be used for indoor work An extension cord must have adequate wire size AWG or American Wire Gauge for safety and to prevent loss of power and overheating The smaller the gauge number of the wire the greater the capacity of the cable that is 16 gauge has more Capacity than 18 gauge When using more than one extension to make up _ the total length be sure each individual extension contains at least the minimum wire size To determine the minimum wire size required refer to the chart below CHART FOR MINIMUM WIRE SIZE AWG OF EXTENSION CORDS NAMEPLATE TOTAL EXTENSION CORD LENGTH FEET RATING AMPS 25 50 75 100 125 150 175 200 0 10 0 18 18 16 16 14 414 12 12 10 1 13 0 16 16 14 14 14 12 12 12 131 150 14 14 12 12 12 12 12 Before using an extension cord inspect it for loose or exposed wires damaged insulation and defective fittings Make any needed repairs or replace the cord if necessary Black amp Decker has extension cords available that are U L listed for outdoor use MO

TOR Your Black amp Decker tool is powered by a B amp D built motor Be sure your power Supply agrees with the nameplate marking Volts 50 60 Hz or AC only means your tool must be operated only with alter nating Current and never with direct current Volts DC 60Hz or AC DC means your tool may be operated with either aliernating or direct current Voltage decrease of more than 10 will cause loss of power and overheating All B amp D tools are factory tested if this tool does not operate check the power supply MOTOR BRUSHES Inspect carbon brushes regularly by unplugging tool removing 2 screws which attach sander end cap After removing end cap pull out brush assembly Replace brushes if less than in length Keep brushes clean and sliding freely in their guides 3 ATTACHING ABRASIVE PAPER 1 Use perforated abrasive paper 4 x 11 It _ is essential for the efficiency of this sander that the paper is correctly perforated 2 Burnish the reverse of the abrasive paper over a right angle in order to soften it 3 Press the rear clamp the one nearest to the cord and insert the abrasive paper Fig 2 4 Stretch the paper and insert it in the front clamp in the same way Note This sander must be used with perforated paper In order to obtain a good suction effect it is es sential to check the diameter of the holes on the paper and to ensure that they are aligned with those of the backing pad I
5. a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function Check for alignment of moving parts binding of moving parts breakage of parts mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless otherwise indicated elsewhere in this instruction manual Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on and off i DO NOT OPERATE portable electric tools near flammable liquids or in gaseous or explosive atmospheres Motors in these tools normally spark and the sparks might ignite fumes 2 DOUBLE INSULATION Your Sander is DOUBLE INSULATED to give you added safety This means that it is constructed throughout with TWO separate layers of electrical insulation or one DOUBLE thickness of insulation between you and the tool s electrical system Tools built with this insulation system are not intended to be grounded As a result your Drill is equipped with a two prong plug which permits you to use extension cords without concern for maintaining a ground connection NOTE DOUBLE INSULATION dces not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this tool The insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool CAUTION When servicing Double Insulated

7. ficiency In order to obtain an optimum finish it is essential to progressively reduce the grain size of the paper being used With each change in grain size it is recom mended to sand at right angles in relation to the previous sanding In order to obtain a perfect finish after using a very fine grained paper we recommend wiping the work surface with a slightly damp rag and sanding again with the finest paper possible In order to obtain maximum suction it is important to empty the recovery tube frequently Example In continuous use we recommend emptying the tube every 20 minutes or at the latest when the volume of dust fills one third of the capacity of the recovery unit So that the recovery unit can be thoroughly cleaned the tube is washable and must be dried before replacing on the sander BACKING PAD The user can change the Backing Pad after it has undergone prolonged usage Or if he wishes replace it with the rubber Backing Pad Cat No 59910 Unplug the Sander un screw the six Backing Pad screws remove the existing pad and replace it with the new one Tighten the 6 screws See Figure 5 E D A gt ie j Fa a 4 P e gt r A FIG 5 Or g a Q Drs BACKING PAD BACKING PAD SCREWS HOLE PUNCH OPERATION 4 Remove the metal guide 1 and the hole puncher 2 from the paper holder 3 2 Place the paper grain upwards on the holder so that the paper is in contact with th
8. ncorrect positioning of the paper would produce poor sanding and would impair the efficiency of the suction system _ Where no pre perforated paper is available it is possible to perforate an ordinary abrasive paper with the aid of the Black amp Decker holepuncher FIG 2 i is Cat No 59908 DUST RECOVERY UNIT This sander is fitted with a dust recovery unit and must be used with the dust collecting tube assembled to the unit Sander must never be connected to any other suction sys tem i 1 Insert the connector in the tube 2 Fit the other end of the tube into the ring so that the knurled part is behind the latter i Screw the ring onto the connector Insert the connectors into the sander aligning it with the pin located on the exhaust tube Your sander is now ready to use i ad LOCK ON BUTTON OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS SWITCH To switch on depress the switch To ctop release it To lock the switch in the on posi tion when using continuously press the switch and at the same time press the locking push button found on the side of the handie and then release the switch In order to cancel the locking system press the switch right down and release See Figure 4 SWITCH FIG 4 SANDING It is not necessary to exert a lot of pressure on the tool when sanding horizontally the weight of the sander itself is sufficient to ensure satisfactory results Any excess will reduce its ef
9. tective hair covering to contain long hair USE SAFETY GLASSES Also use face or dustmask if cutting operation is dusty DON T ABUSE CORD Never carry tool by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacie Keep cord from heat oil and sharp edges SECURE WORK Use clamps or a vise to hold work It s safer tham using your hand and it frees both hands to operate tool DON T OVERREACH Keep proper footing and balance at all times MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE Keep tools sharp and clean for better and safe performance Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories inspect tool cords periodically and if damaged have repaired by authorized service facility Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if damaged Keep handies dry clean and free from oil and grease DISCONNECT TOOLS When not in use before servicing and when changing accessories such as blades bits cutters REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES Form habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING Don t carry plugged in tool with finger on switch Be sure switch is off when plugging in OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS When tool is used outdoors use only extension cords intended for use outdoors and so marked STAY ALERT Watch what you are doing Use common sense Do not operate tool when you are tired CHECK DAMAGED PARTS Before further use of the tool
