E DROP CLOTHS IN THE WORK AREA to catch paint chips or peelings Wear protective clothing such as extra work shirts overalls and hats 4 WORK IN ONE ROOM AT A TIME Furnishings should be removed or placed in the centre of the room covered Work areas should be sealed off from the rest of the dwelling by sealing doorways with drop cloths 5 CHILDREN PREGNANT OR POTENTIALLY PREGNANT WOMEN AND NURSING MOTHERS SHOULD NOT BE PRESENT in the work area until the work is finished and all cleanup is complete SAVE THESE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS 10 13 III Specific safety rules for WEAR A DUST RESPIRATOR OR A DUAL FILTER DUST AND FUME RESPIRATOR WHICH HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION OSHA Make sure the mask fits beards and facial hair may keep masks from sealing properly Change filters often DISPOSABLE PAPER MASKS ARE NOT ADEQUATE USE CAUTION WHEN OPERATING THE HEAT GUN Keep the heat gun moving Excessive heat will generate fumes that can be inhaled by the operator KEEP FOOD AND DRINK OUT OF THE WORK AREA Wash hands arms and face and rinse mouth before eating and drinking Do not smoke or chew gum or tobacco in the work area CLEAN UP ALL REMOVED PAINT AND DUST BY WET MOPPING THE FLOORS Use a wet cloth to clean all walls sills and any other surface where paint or dust has settled DO NOT SWEEP DRY DUST OR VACUUM Use a high phosphate detergent or trisodium phosphate TSP to wash

7. act with grounded surfaces such as pipes radiators ranges refrigerators SECURE small or irregular shaped objects in a vise when applying heat SAVE THESE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS III Specific safety rules for the heat gun continued WHEN REMOVING PAINT OR VARNISH WARNING EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN STRIPPING PAINT THE PAINT PEELINGS PAINT RESIDUE AND PAINT VAPOURS MAY CONTAIN LEAD WHICH IS POISONOUS ANY PRE 1977 PAINT MAY CONTAIN LEAD AND PAINT APPLIED TO HOMES PRIOR TO 1950 IS LIKELY TO CONTAIN LEAD ONCE APPLIED ON SURFACES HAND TO MOUTH CONTACT CAN RESULT IN THE INGESTION OF LEAD EXPOSURE TO EVEN LOW LEVELS OF LEAD CAN CAUSE IRREVERSIBLE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM DAMAGE YOUNG AND UNBORN CHILDREN ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE Before beginning any paint removal process you should determine whether the paint you are removing contains lead This can be done by your local heath department or by a professional who uses a paint analyzer to check the lead content Lead based paint should only be removed by a professional DO NOT remove paint using a heat gun Persons removing paint should follow these guidelines 1 MOVE THE WORKPIECE OUTDOORS If this is not possible keep the work area well ventilated Open the windows and put an exhaust fan in one window Make sure the fan is moving the air from inside to outside 2 REMOVE OR COVER carpet rugs furniture clothing cooking utensils and air ducts 3 PLAC
8. ce of wood CAUTION LEAD BASED PAINT FUMES ARE VERY HARMFUL ALWAYS PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION WHILE WORKING INDOORS Paint and varnish removal requires some practice and using simple working techniques Always test your results on a small section of paint before moving on to larger areas Turn on the heat gun and allow it to reach full heating power Hold the nozzle 3 to 4 7 6 to 10 2 cm from the paint to be removed After a short time the paint will soften and begin to blister Do not overheat paint this will cause burning and make the finish more difficult to remove When stripping paint overhead always use eye protection Begin scraping the paint off working from top to bottom Use scrapers Scrape with smooth even strokes warming the surface in front of the scraper by moving the heat gun slightly from side to side If paint is warmed properly even thick layers can be removed in a single pass Paint should come off in a strip equal in width to the scraper blade Clean the edge of the scraper often to keep it clean and sharp and to prevent paint buildup on the blade Scrape the paint as soon as it softens it will quickly harden again Cover all surfaces not to be heated with non flammable material Never concentrate tool s heat on a window panel other than glass VII Operation continued Other jobs for the heat gun Your heat gun can be used to 1 2 3 4 10 11 Remove paint and varnish Remove se
9. lf adhesive stickers and trim Loosen rusted or overtightened nuts and metal screws Thaw frozen metal pipes door locks padlocks DO NOT attempt to thaw plastic pipes Highlight the natural woodgrain of wooden surfaces before staining or varnishing Quickly dry paints and varnish This is especially useful when colour matching is required by adding several coats of the paint or varnish Soften old putty before removal Dry out wet damaged wood prior to filling with compound shrink PVC shrink wrap sheeting for package protection Wax and de wax skis shrink polyvinyl wire joints VIII Maintenance WARNING ALWAYS TURN OFF THE HEAT GUN AND UNPLUG THE TOOL FROM THE OUTLET BEFORE MAINTAINING THE HEAT GUN GENERAL MAINTENANCE Keep your heat gun clean and in good repair for maximum performance and machine longevity Before each use inspect the tool switch and cord for damage Check for damaged missing or worn parts Check for loose screws misalignment or binding of moving parts or any other conditions that may affect the operation If abnormal vibration or noise occurs turn off the tool immediately and have the problem corrected before further use Do not use the tool until properly repaired or replaced Cleaning Frequently blow dust out of the motor area using an air compressor or dust vacuum Keep the tool clean dry and free of oil and grease Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean your tool Certain cleani
