1. positioned upward then gently depress shutter release R Self timer The self timer is a useful supplementary aid in combination with a tripod whenever the photographer wishes to include himself in the picture a family group photo or with friends 1 The self timer may be set by pushing the lever in the direction indicated by the arrow When the photograph has been taken with the self timer the lever should be returned to the original position 2 Depress shutter release after the film has been wound on with the thumb wheel The self timer lamp red will light up after about 10 seconds the shutter will be released automatically Approximately 3 seconds prior to the actual shutter release the lamp will begin to flash intermittently along with a simultaneous intermittent electronic audible beep indicating that the shutter will be released in a few seconds This lamp also tights up for an instant when the shutter is released during normal photography Flash not used Attaching the neck strap Put one end of the neck strap into the hook and tie it securely as illustrated This strap has been provided to offer handy portability when carrying the camera x Soft cases e As optional accessories there are two kinds of soft cases available for your PC35AF as illustrated The type S can contain only the camera while the type L the camera fitted with the PC35 Winder Soft C

The Pentax PC35AF is a highly developed precision instrument Care must be taken to avoid dropping the camera or striking it against a solid object wall bookcase etc Should this happen it is recommended that the camera be taken to one of the nearest Pentax service facilities for detailed inspection of any possible mechanical damage 2 Dust dirt and other foreign objects appearing on the lens viewfinder or the auto focusing windows should be removed as soon as possible for it will interfere with the performance of your camera It is recommended that a commercial lens blower or brush available at camera dealers be employed This means is normally sufficient to accomplish simple cleaning Smudges such as fingerprints should be wiped off carefully by using a soft lens tissue or cotton cloth impregnated with a mild lens cleaning liquid compound 3 Solvents such as thinners or alcohol should not be used to clean the components seepage may cause irreparable damage to the special lens sealing and adhesive compound between the glass 4 If the camera gets wet the camera should be wiped by using a soft dry cloth Following lengthy seashore use the camera should be carefully cleaned again using a soft cloth preferably cotton to remove the salt traces 5 Cameras should not be subjected to high temperatures and humidity For example A car interior or its trunk compartment is often subjected to a high degree of heat It is also possibl

7. ess the shutter button and the needle indicator automatically moves along the zone focusing marks according to the camera subject distance The zone markers indicate the camera subject distance involved as follows amp a distance of approx 0 8m fh a distance of approx 1 5m iA infinity e When the needle indicator wavers in the area of amp frame the subject so that it is located within the short distance compensation indicator 2 lit it is a warning that the shutter speed is too slow causing possible camera shake and that insufficient light is being registered In this event use of the flash is recommended refer to Flash Photography found in the back of this operating manual The auto focusing system is highly accurate and reliable for ordinary photographic requirements However under certain conditions the auto focusing system may be confused For example When the zone focusing marker and the known subject distance indicate an obvious discrepancy to a large degree then the subject distance cannot be accurately measured by the electronic system of Pentax PC35AF Additional information and possible remedies can be found under Difficult auto focusing subjects situations in this manual Ifyou hear a beep and the ORANGE lamp is deevecvvevecsece 4 Auto focus frame O Field of view frame Short distance compensation indicator Distance needle indicator Zone focu

10. lease 3 Battery Status Check After opening the lens protector battery status can be checked by covering the metering cell with the hand as illustrated and partially depressing the shutter release button The ORANGE indicator wilt glow continuously accompanied by a beeping sound when normal voltage is available the lamp may be seen in the upper section of the viewfinder Battery status is also known by another method in a brightly lit place partially depress the shutter button without covering the metering cell with the hand and if the GREEN lamp lights there is no problem with the batteries e Insert both batteries properly according to the indicated and markings e When replacing batteries by type brand new or old they should not be mixed as by doing so poor results may be the outcome It is recommended that the batteries are removed from the camera if it is not used for a long time Leaving batteries in the camera may result in acid leakage and possible damage to the camera mechanism 4 Film Speed Setting Align the index red line of the film speed lever with the corresponding film speed ASA ISO of film being used 2 50 10 ASA ISO geet A 2 ar 3240 6480 15160 20 320 e Film speed is indicated on film package re H las ISO 100 21 ASA 100 21DIN 5 Film Loading Avoid if at all possible loading film in direct sunlight Keep lens prote
11. llowing focus lock procedure is recommended 1 Center your subject for focusing within the auto focus frame of the viewfinder Partially depress the shutter button which will freeze the focus temporarily Confirm position of the zone focusing marker indicator in the viewfinder While shutter button is partially depressed frame your picture and then release the shutter With the shutter button partially depressed focus control is frozen at the position of the indicator within the zone focusing marker area Focusing will be unlocked when pressure upon the button is released After depressing the shutter button partially if you remove your finger from the shutter button in order to stop taking a photograph the shutter button may remain depressed In that event further depress the shutter button and release the shutter The button will then return to the original position X Difficult auto focusing subjects situations Although the Pentax PC35AF auto focusing system is extremely accurate and reliable certain difficult situations will create problems for the system unless compensation is provided A common solution will be to focus upon a subject located near the actual subject being photographed and freeze the distance Then move position the camera to point con sidered best for framing purposes Some typical problems which may be encountered when the following subjects situations are within the viewfinder s aut
12. o focus frame 1 Non reflective objects dark hair or a black telephone which possess poor reflective qualities 2 Wire netting latticework and an iron exercise bar all with minimal light reflecting qualities 3 When fluorescent lamps T V sets sunlight coming through the trees or strong backlighting conditions are found in and around the auto focus frame 4 Glass panelling mirrors and or a car body aill possessing strong reflective qualities 5 Trains and cars and other fast moving objects 6 Water jets water surfaces smoke flame fire works and other vaguely shaped objects e Automated flash control range ASA ISO 100 film 0 7 to 4m ASA ISO 400 film 1 4to6m e Number of cassette rol films possible Approx 100 flashes with a fresh set of alkaline batteries at normal temperature and humidity Precautions In flash photography partial depressing of shutter button will light the GREEN lamp in the viewfinder However use flash after confirmation of the flash ready lamp before releasing the shutter Should the shutter be released before the flash ready lamp is lit it may cause underexposed pictures darker results The flash head must be pushed back into the camera when not required if left as it is the batteries will continue to drain depleting them and shortening their life In taking vertical photographs the camera should be held with the flash head

16. sing marker GREEN ORANGE lamp 3 When film has engaged properly confirm that film is flat as illustrated otherwise raise film rewind crank and turn it slightly in the direction of the arrow to take up any slack then return the crank to its original position 4 Close the back cover until it locks with a click sound 5 Film advance must be continued by means of the advancing wheel until exposure counter registers as illustrated Advance automatically halts when the first frame is ready for exposure You may now begin to take photographs e The film should be rewound after exposing the last frame and the cassette removed Untoading film in direct sunlight should be avoided if at all possible 1 When the last frame has been exposed felt by a slight tautness during film advance depress film rewind button found at the camera base slack 2 Raise the film rewind crank and turn in the direction of the indicated arrow Continue to turn the crank until a sudden tension release is felt Then turn a few additional times until crank moves freely Pull the film rewind crank to open the back cover Then remove the film cassette Recommended camera subject distance with the system e For best possible results operate at a camera subject distance of 0 7m to 9 infinity Focusing cannot be satisfactorily accomplishe at the shorter distances of less than 0 7m o Do not blo
