1. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS numser and 3ML6 60001 3ML6D 12001 PARTS LIST 3ML6DE 01001 s safety features orporate product desi safety instructions or warnings which repre ments For your safety and those around you please contact your nearest Ariens Gravely Dealer for a demonstration of the current The product for which you have requested formation or replacement parts is not a sent the latest State Of The Art develop product safety provisions and features current product The replacement models in inc fol 3 SECTION I LUBRICATION 1 ENGINE Before starting the engine fill the crankcase with oil See the manufacturer s instruction book and the engine nameplate for engine lubrication in structions The use of MS classification 5W 20 oil is recommended for use in the engine crankcase during cold weather operation When operating in temperatures of 32 degrees or above use SAE 30 MS classification oil CAUTION When filling or draining the engine or when lubricating the tractor ex ercise care to keep oil or grease from dripping on the drive plate SECTION II 2 TRACTOR a The roller ball and needle bearings used on the Ariens EMPEROR tractor are lubricated for life and require no further attention b Occasional greasing of the chains drive gears on the wheels and the shafts on which the shift brac
2. 4 IMPLEMENT CLUTCH A separate clutch is provided for starting and stopping power driven implements The clutch lever B Figure 1 is located in front of the main frame on the left side b start implement move clutch lever to right To stop move clutch lever to left as in dicated on panel above lever As a safety precaution a brake shoe on the clutch engages the drive pulley to stop the imple ment immediately when clutch is disengaged 5 INSTA HITCH The EMPEROR Tractor is equipped with a quick hitch for connecting attachments No tools are needed Attach implements as follows SWAY CHAIN ATTACHMENT a 26 Rotary Mower 1 Turn Insta Hitch knob D Figure 1 coun terclockwise until carrier slots E and exposed 2 Insert floating hitch F Figure 1 into carrier slots and turn Insta Hitch knob clockwise until the rod projecting from floating hitch is en closed by frame 3 Cross sway chains pass them UNDER the roller support bracket and hook S hooks to holes on either side of frame 4 To remove implement simply turn Insta Hitch knob counterclockwise until carrier slots are exposed and remove floating hitch from frame Disconnect sway chains from tractor frame b 30 Rotary Mower 1 Turn Insta Hitch knob Figure 1 coun terclockwise until carrier slots are exposed 2 Insert floating hitch in the slots in the carrier and fasten the links to the carrier with

4. washers and hair pin cotters Turn Insta Hitch knob clockwise until the rod projecting from the floating hitch is enclosed by frame 3 Cross sway chains pass them UNDER the roller support bracket and hook 5 hooks to holes on either side of frame See Figure 1 4 To remove implement simply turn Insta Hitch knob counterclockwise until carrier slots are exposed and remove floating hitch from frame Disconnect sway chains from tractor frame SECTION 11 SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS 1 GENERAL Ariens dealers will provide any service which may be required to keep the EMPEROR operating at peak efficiency The EMPEROR is equipped with the finest quality engine obtainable However should servicing be required it can be obtained from an Ariens dealer or authorized engine manufacturer s service station Consult an Ariens dealer for de tails 2 ENGINE Refer to engine instruction book and nameplate on engine for maintenance instructions If repairs or service are needed for engine see an Ariens dealer or nearest authorized engine service station 3 DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT a To adjust belt tension loosen nuts B Fig ure 2 on PTO bracket Move assembly in slots until the distance tween the inside of the belt is approximately 1 1 8 inch with idler pulley engaged Retighten nuts See Figure 2 4 DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT To remove drive belt follow this procedure Remove mower belt S

9. ee Section IV b Remove five cap screws C Figure 2 and take off rubber friction disc Remove two cap screws Figure 2 and take off rear belt fingers D Figure 2 4 Remove cap screw Figure 2 and take off front belt fingers Figure 2 Loosen nuts Figure 2 on PTO bracket and slide assembly to bottom of slot f Take belt from PTO pulley train around drive plate H Figure 2 and out REPLACE WITH SPECIAL BELT FROM ARIENS DEALER Be sure belt is in both pulley grooves and between belt fingers on both ends for proper clutching For belt adjustment see paragraph 3 5 FRICTION DISC Replace friction disc by removing five whizlock screws Figure 2 When replacing be sure disc is located over shoulder properly and flush against face of hub 6 BRAKE ADJUSTMENT a Be sure shift lever is in NEUTRAL position b Adjust set collar J Figure 2 against spring until brake band just clears differential housing A slight brake drag does no harm Test against excessive brake drag by turning both wheels by hand simultaneously 7 SHIFTING If after continued use the machine should shift harder than usual follow these precautions a Place a few drops of oil on the shift lever and tube b If brake adjustment is too loose the machine will shift hard See paragraph 6 for brake adjustment procedure Grease shaft on which sliding shift bracket slides and hexagon shaf
10. ket and sprocket are located will result in easier operation The use of a good grade of grease is recommended c A drop of oil applied to the shift lever pivot Insta Hitch threads mower clutch lever steering column and other pivot points will result in smoother operation of these parts 4 Wheels equipped with zerk fittings must be greased at least once each season Wheels not equipped with zerk fittings must be removed cleaned and repacked once each season OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS CAUTION Before starting engine be sure tractor speed control lever A Figure 1 is in neutral position and the power driven implement clutch B Figure 1 is in the OUT position as indicated on the frame above the lever 1 STARTING ENGINE a Recoil Starting Engine 1 The engine throttle lever C Figure 1 has four positions CHOKE FAST SLOW STOP To start cold engine place the throttle lever in the CHOKE position and pull starter handle When engine starts move throttle lever C Figure 1 to SLOW position NOTE Choking a warm engine may cause flooding of the carburetor Always try to start a warm engine without using the choke 2 To stop the engine moye the throttle lever to the STOP position Electric Starting Engines 1 Plug the AC cord from the starter control box into a 120 volt AC receptacle Circuit should be fused at more than 20 amperes Plug the DC cord from the starter contro
11. l box onto the starter on the EMPEROR 2 Place engine throttle control in the SLOW position 3 Operate the switch on the starter control box 4 Allow engine to crank for four or five revo lutions and then move the throttle control lever to the CHOKE position As soon as the engine starts move the lever to the SLOW position 2 CHANGING SPEEDS A combination automotive type clutch and brake pedal serves to disengage the clutch so that the speed control lever may be positioned in any one of the four forward speeds and reverse b To operate depress clutch pedal lightly press down on shift lever button and move lever to desired speed Release clutch slowly and tractor will move forward See G Figure 1 Once the tractor is in motion it is possible ai without using the clutch to shift to a higher speed range and back down again However the clutch must be used when moving shift lever into neutral or reverse 4 Always remove the foot from the clutch pedal after it is engaged Riding clutch unnecessarily will wear it out prematurely Depressing shift lever button and moving lever backward from neutral engages reverse Forward speeds at governed engine speed are 2 3 4 and 5 miles per hour reverse speed is 2 miles per hour 3 BRAKES Depressing the clutch pedal beyond shifting range engages the brake The brake has sufficient capacity to hold the tractor on any hill
