Administrator Password     When an administrator password is set  you are prompted to type a valid password each time you try to  access the Setup Utility program  The Setup Utility program cannot be accessed until a valid password  is typed in     If both the power on password and administrator password are set  you can type either password  However   you must use your administrator password to change any configuration settings     Hard Disk Password    Setting a Hard Disk Password prevents unauthorized access to the data on the hard disk drive  When a  Hard Disk Password is set  you are prompted to type a valid password each time you try to access the  hard disk drive    Notes     e After you set a Hard Disk Password  your data on the hard disk drive is protected even if the hard disk  drive is removed from one computer and installed in another     e If the Hard Disk Password is forgotten  there is no way to reset the password or recover data from the  hard disk drive     Setting  changing  and deleting a password    To set  change  or delete a password  do the following   1  Start the Setup Utility program  See    Starting the Setup Utility program    on page 55     56 ThinkCentre E93 Hardware Maintenance Manual    2   3     4     From the Setup Utility program main menu  select Security     Depending on the password type  select Set Power On Password  Set Administrator Password  or  Hard Disk Password     Follow the instructions on the right side of the screen to set  c

By using the Setup Utility program  you can set passwords to prevent unauthorized access to your computer  and data  The following types of passwords are available     e Power On Password    O Copyright Lenovo 2013  2014 55    e Administrator Password  e Hard Disk Password    You do not have to set any passwords to use your computer  However  using passwords improves  computing security  If you decide to set any passwords  read the following sections     Password considerations    A password can be any combination of up to 64 alphabetic and numeric characters  For security reasons  it  is recommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised  To set a strong password   use the following guidelines     e Have at least eight characters in length   e Contain at least one alphabetic character and one numeric character  e Setup Utility program and hard disk passwords are not case sensitive  e Not be your name or your user name   e Not be a common word or a common name   e Be significantly different from your previous passwords    Power on password    When a power on password is set  you are prompted to type a valid password each time the computer is  turned on  The computer cannot be used until the valid password is typed in     Administrator password    Setting an administrator password deters unauthorized users from changing configuration settings  If you  are responsible for maintaining the configuration settings of several computers  you might want to set an

If an electrical  accident occurs  you can then operate the switch or unplug the power cord quickly     e Do not work alone under hazardous conditions or near equipment that has hazardous voltages   e Disconnect all power before        Performing a mechanical inspection       Working near power supplies       Removing or installing Field Replaceable Units  FRUs     e Before you start to work on the machine  unplug the power cord  If you cannot unplug it  ask the customer  to power off the wall box that supplies power to the machine and to lock the wall box in the off position     e  f you need to work on a machine that has exposed electrical circuits  observe the following precautions       Ensure that another person  familiar with the power off controls  is near you   Remember  Another person must be there to switch off the power  if necessary         Use only one hand when working with powered on electrical equipment  keep the other hand in your  pocket or behind your back   Remember  There must be a complete circuit to cause electrical shock  By observing the above rule   you may prevent a current from passing through your body         When using a tester  set the controls correctly and use the approved probe leads and accessories for  that tester         Stand on suitable rubber mats  obtained locally  if necessary  to insulate you from grounds such as  metal floor strips and machine frames     Observe the special safety precautions when you work with very high voltages
