NOTE Ensure upper handle grips are in position as shown in the following illustrations throttle handle grip on left side 4 Align holes and insert curved head tube bolt through upper and lower handles 5 Re install and securely tighten upper wing nut onto bolt 6 Retighten lower wing nut securely eave handle Upper wing nut TODS DON pp g nut aH K Lower wing nut Z NOTE When performing the following step be sure the starter rope is not caught under the cable clamps The starter rope must hang freely to operate properly Cable clamps Throttle cable 7 Align one cable clamp above the tube bolts and the other below the starter rope han dle Install the cable clamps one at a time around the tube and throttle cable NOTE Ensure throttle cable is in groove of clamps and lies flat against the upper handle tube after installation see illustration above OPERATION KNOW YOUR TRIMMER READ THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL AND SAFETY RULES BEFORE OPERATING YOUR UNIT Compare the illustrations with your unit to familiarize yourself with the location of the various controls and adjustments Save this manual for future reference Throttle Trigger Starter Rope Handle ON OFF Switch Upper Handle Lower Handle ON OFF SWITCH The ON OFF switch is used to stop engine To stop the engine move the switch to the OFF position PRIMER BULB The PRIMER BULB removes air from the car bureto
3. instructions please call 1 800 554 6723 STARTING A COLD ENGINE ora warm engine after running out of fuel 1 Move ON OFF switch to the ON position 2 Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times 3 Move choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position 4 Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and hold through all remaining steps 5 Pull starter rope handle sharply until engine sounds as if it is trying to start but do not pull rope more than 6 times 6 As soon as engine sounds as if it is trying to start move choke lever to HALF CHOKE position 7 Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs but no more than 6 pulls NOTE If the en gine doesn t start after 6 pulls at the HALF CHOKE position move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position and press the primer bulb 6 times Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger and pull the starter rope 2 more times Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the starter rope until the engine runs but no more than 6 pulls Ifthe engine still doesn t start itis probably flooded Proceed to START ING A FLOODED ENGINE 8 Once the engine starts allow it to run 10 seconds then move the choke lever to the OFF CHOKE position Allow the unit to run for 30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE be fore releasing the throttle trigger NOTE If engine dies with the choke le ver inthe OFF CHOKE position move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the rope until engine runs but no m

8. as the carburetor and the ignition system Where a warrantable condition exists WEED EATER will repair your small off road engine at no cost to you Expenses covered under warran ty include diagnosis parts and labor MANUFACTURER S WARRANTY COV ERAGE If any emissions related part on your engine as listed under Emissions Control Warranty Parts List is defective or a defect in the materials or workmanship of the engine causes the failure of such an emission related part the part will be repaired or replaced by WEED EATER OWNER S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILITIES As the small off road engine owner you are responsible for the per formance of the required maintenance listed in your instruction manual WEED EATER recommends that you retain all receipts cov ering maintenance on your small off road en gine but WEED EATER cannot deny warran ty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all sched uled maintenance As the small off road en gine owner you should be aware that WEED EATER may deny you warranty coverage if your small off road engine or a part of it has failed due to abuse neglect improper mainte nance unapproved modifications or the use of parts not made or approved by the original equipment manufacturer You are responsi ble for presenting your small off road engine to an WEED EATER authorized repair center as soon as aproblem exists Warranty repairs should be completed in a rea
9. away from the operator Use only in daylight or in good artificial light Use only for jobs explained in this manual TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE Stop the unit when not in use Carry or transport the unit with engine stopped Allow the engine to cool secure unit before storing or transporting in vehicle Empty the fuel tank before storing or trans porting the unit Use up fuel left in the car buretor by starting the engine and letting it run until it stops Store unit and fuel in an area where fuel va pors cannot reach sparks or open flames from water heaters electric motors or switches furnaces etc Store the unit out of the reach of children A WARNING The engine exhaust from this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer birth de fects or other reproductive harm SPECIAL NOTICE This unit is not equipped with a temperature limiting muffler and spark arresting screen which meets the require ments of California Codes 4442 and 4443 All U S forest land and the states of California Ida ho Maine Minnesota New Jersey Oregon and Washington require by law that many inter nal combustion engines to be equipped with a spark arrestor screen If you operate in a locale where such regulations exist you are legally re sponsible for installing and maintaining the oper ating condition of these parts Failure to do so is a violation of the law If a spark arrestor is re quired in your a

11. guards in place Position unit so that any sharp object cannot acci dentally cause injury Store unit and fuel well out of the_reach of children SEASONAL STORAGE Prepare unit for storage at end of season or if it will not be used for 30 days or more If your unit is to be stored for a period of time e Clean the entire unit before lengthy storage e Store in a clean dry area e Lightly oil external metal surfaces FUEL SYSTEM Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA TION section ofthis manual see message la beled IMPORTANT regarding the use of ga sohol in your engine Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabilizer to the gasoline in the fuel tank or fuel storage container Fol low the mix instructions found on stabilizer container Run engine at least 5 minutes after adding stabilizer WARNING Recheck the idle speed after each adjustment The trimmer head must not move or spin at idle speed to avoid serious injury to the operator or others Air Filter Cover Idle Speed Screw If you require further assistance or are unsure about performing this procedure contact an authorized service dealer or call 1 800 554 6723 HELPFUL TIP During storage of your gas oil mixture the oil will sepa rate from the gas We recommend that you shake the gas can weekly to insure proper blending of the gas and oil ENGINE Remove spark plug
12. hen the engine is run at less than full throttle At lower speeds there is less engine noise and vibration Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting To stop engine e Release the throttle trigger e Move the ON OFF switch to the OFF posi tion MAINTENANCE WARNING Disconnect the spark plug before performing maintenance except for carburetor adjustments HELPFUL TIP IMPORTANT Have all repairs other than the rec ommended maintenance described in the instruction manual performed by an authorized service dealer If any dealer other than an authorized service dealer performs work on the product WEED EATER may not pay for repairs under warranty It is your re sponsibility to maintain and perform general maintenance CHECK FOR LOOSE FASTENERS AND PARTS e Spark Plug Boot e Air Filter e Housing Screws e Debris Shield CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR WORN PARTS Contact an authorized service dealer for re placement of damaged or worn parts ON OFF Switch Ensure ON OFF switch functions properly by moving the switch to the OFF position Make sure engine stops then restart engine and continue e Fuel Tank Discontinue use of unit if fuel tank shows signs of damage or leaks e Debris Shield Discontinue use of unit if debris shield is damaged INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND LABELS e After each use inspect complete unit for loose or damaged parts Clean

14. instructions printed on con tainer Once oil is added to gasoline shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed Always read and follow the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling your unit IMPORTANT Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during stor age Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems empty the fuel system before stor age for 30 days or longer Drain the gas tank start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty Use fresh fuel next season Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur See the STORAGE sec tion for additional information ON HELPFUL TIP If your engine switch reads push to stop it is always OFF in the ON position HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT e To stop the engine move the ON OFF switch to the OFF position until the unit has fully stopped e If engine does not stop move choke to the FULL CHOKE position Choke Lever i G Primer Bulb Nier HOW TO START YOUR UNIT WARNING The trimmer head will turn while starting the engine Avoid any con tact with the muffler A hot muffler can cause serious burns ON OFF Switch HELPFUL TIP If your engine still does not start after following these
15. ore than 6 pulls STARTING A WARM ENGINE 1 Move ON OFF switch to the ON position 2 Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position 5 3 Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger Keep throttle trigger fully squeezed until the engine runs smoothly 4 Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs but no more than 5 pulls 5 Allow engine to run 15 seconds then move the choke lever to OFF CHOKE NOTE If engine has not started pull starter rope 5 more pulls If engine still does not run it is probably flooded STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE Flooded engines can be started by placing the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position then pull the rope to clear the engine of ex cess fuel This could require pulling the starter handle many times depending on how badly the unit is flooded If the unit still doesn t start refer to TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call 1 800 554 6723 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ALWAYS USE Eye Protection Heavy Long Pants Heavy Shoes Cut from your right to your left NOTE Keep left and right hands on grips during operation of unit as shown above to avoid covering air intake holes located on un derside of upper handle WARNING Always wear eye protec tion Never lean over the trimmer head Rocks or debris can ricochet or be thrown into eyes and face and cause blindness or other serious injury Do not run the engine at a higher speed than necessary The cutting line will cut efficiently w
16. others away when making carburetor adjustments Use only recommended WEED EATER accessories and replacement parts Have all maintenance and service not ex plained in this manual performed by an autho rized service dealer FUEL SAFETY Mix and pour fuel outdoors Keep away from sparks or flames Use a container approved for fuel Do not smoke or allow smoking near fuel or the unit Avoid spilling fuel or oil Wipe up all fuel spills Move at least 10 feet 3 meters away from fueling site before starting engine e Stop engine and allow to cool before remov ing fuel cap e Always store gasoline in a container ap proved for flammable liquids CUTTING SAFETY A WARNING Inspect the area before each use Remove objects rocks broken glass nails wire etc which can be thrown by or become entangled in line Hard objects can damage trimmer head and be thrown causing serious injury e Use unit properly Use only for trimming mowing and sweeping Do not use for edg ing pruning or hedge trimming Do not force unit It will do the job better and with less risk ofinjury at the rate for which it was designed Keep firm footing and balance Do not over reach Keep all parts of your body away from spin ning line and muffler Keep engine and cutting head below waist level A hot muffler can cause serious burns Cut only from your right to your left Cutting with the line on right side of the shield will throw debris
17. ove and discard worn line before installing new line 2 Use only 0 115 3 mm diameter WEED EATER brand cut length line 3 Insert one end of the line through the posi tioning tunnel 4 Continue to feed line through tunnel until line is centered leaving equal amounts on each side See illustration below Positioning 5 Insert ends of line one at atime through the line exit tunnels Air Filter Filter SS Air Filter Cover Screws NOTE Do not clean filter in gasoline or oth er flammable solvent to avoid creating a fire hazard or producing harmful evaporative emissions 3 Wash the filter in soap and water 4 Allow filter to dry 5 Add 10 15 drops of oil to the filter squeeze the filter to distribute oil NOTE FILTER MUST BE OILED 6 Replace parts REPLACE SPARK PLUG Replace the spark plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better Set spark plug gap at 0 025 inch Ignition timing is fixed and nonadjustable 1 Twist then pull off spark plug boot 2 Remove spark plug from cylinder and dis card 3 Replace with Champion RCJ 6Y spark plug and tighten securely with a 3 4 inch socket wrench 4 Reinstall the spark plug boot SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS 6 Pull the line and make sure the line is ex tended fully through the tunnels Line exit tunnels 7 Correctly installed line will be the same length on both ends CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS WARNING Kee
18. p others away when making idle speed adjustments The trimmer head will be spinning during most of this pro cedure Wear your protective equipment and observe all safety precautions After making adjustments the trimmer head must not move spin at idle speed The carburetor has been carefully set at the factory Adjustments may be necessary if you notice any of the following conditions e Engine will not idle when the throttle is re leased The trimmer head moves spins at idle 7 Make adjustments with the unit supported so the cutting attachment is off the ground and will not make contact with any object Hold the unit by hand while running and making ad justments Keep all parts of your body away from the cutting attachment and muffler Idle Speed Adjustment Allow engine to idle Adjust speed until engine runs without trimmer head moving or spinning idle too fast or stalling idle speed too slow e Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in crease engine speed if engine stalls or dies e Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to decrease engine speed if trimmer head moves or spins at idle STORAGE WARNING Perform the following steps after each use Allow engine to cool and secure the unit before storing or transporting Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or open flames from water heaters electric motors or switches furnaces etc Store unit with all
19. r and fuel lines and fills them with fuel This allows you to start the engine with fewer pulls on the starter rope Activate the primer Choke Lever bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to its original form CHOKE The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the engine to aid in cold starting Activate the choke by moving the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position After the engine attempts to start move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position Once engine has started move the choke lever to the OFF CHOKE position 4 BEFORE STARTING ENGINE AA WARNING Be sure to read the fuel information in the safety rules before you be gin If you do not understand the safety rules do not attempt to fuel your unit Call 1 800 554 6723 FUELING ENGINE AA WARNING Remove fuel cap slowly when refueling HELPFUL TIP To obtain the correct oil mix ratio pour 3 2 ounces of 2 cycle synthetic oil into one gallon of fresh gas This engine is certified to operate on un leaded gasoline Before operation gasoline must be mixed with a good quality synthetic 2 cycle air cooled engine oil designed to be mixed at a ratio of 40 1 Poulan WEED EATER brand synthetic oil is recommended Mix gas oline and oil at a ratio of 40 1 A 40 1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3 2 ounces 95 ml of oil with 1 gallon 4 liters of unleaded gasoline DO NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil These oils will cause engine damage When mixing fuel follow
