1. each of you must be set to the sane channel and CTCSS code To choose a channel Press the A or W button to increase or decrease the chama number displayed Navigating through the Menu To access the advanced features of the FRS440 your radio has a menu function 1 To enter the menu press and hold the call menu button for 1 second 2 Additional presses of the call menu button will advance through the nenu until exiting to normal operating mode 3 Other methods of exiting the menu function are a Press and hold the call menu button for 1 second again b Press PTT c Vikit 10 seconds until the unit autorratically returns to nomal mode Choosing a CTCSS Code Each of the FRS channels 1 14 may have any one of the codes 0 38 selected Code 0 indicates no CTCSS code selected and your radio can receive a signal regardless of the code settings of the transrritting radio 1 Enter the nenu Advance through the menu the CTCSS code on the LCD display will flash 2 Press the A or W button to increase or decrease the code number displayed 3 Exit the Menu to reum to normal mode Talking on Your Radio To talk to others using the radio 1 Press and hold the PTT button and speak ina dear normal voice about 2 3 inches awey from the microphone To avoid cutting off the first part of your transmission pause slightly after pressing the PTT button before you start talking 2 When you are finished

5. h will intrediately exit and reum to FRS Radio Mode To tum on the Weather Radio 1 Enter the Menu 2 Press either the A or W button until the WX icon is shown indicating the Weather Radio Mode 3 Exit the Menu Choosing a Weather Channel There are 7 NOAA chama frequencies available and these frequencies are common between the US and Canada You will need to know whet frequency is being transmitted in your location Press the A or V button to increase or decrease the channel number displayed The Auto Squelch feature is never active in Weather Radio Mode NOAA Weather Radio Frequency List Channel 1 162 550Mhz Channel 5 162 450 Mhz Channel 2 162 400Mhz Channel 6 162 500 Mhz Channel 3 162 475 Mhz Channel 7 162 525 Mhz Channel 4 162 425 Mhz To retum to the FRS Rado 1 Enter the Menu 2 Press either the or W button until the channel numbers on the display are flashing indicating the FRS Radio Mode 3 Exit the Menu USING THE FM RADIO Your FRS440 radio can receive FM radio stations from87 7Mhz to 107 9Mhz While using the FM Radio you are not able to receive FRS contmunications unless you press the PTT or call menu buttons which will inrvediately it and reium to FRS Radio Mode To tum on the FM Radio 1 Enter the Menu 2 Press either the Up or Down button until the FM icon is shown indicating the FM Radio Mode 3 Exit the Menu Choosing an FM Station Press the A or W button to scroll through the
6. hat Channel until the channel is dear Then after a 4 second delay the unit will continue scanning Pressing PTT while the scan is paused on a channel will allow you to transmit on that channel To tum on channel scanning Press and hold either the or V button until the SCAN icon on the display is shown The channel number on the display will rapidly cycle through the channels To tum off channel scanning Press any key to cancel SCAN node Ambient Temperature Display Your radio will periodically display the ambient tenperature either in degrees F or degrees C To change this setting 1 Enter the Menu Advance through the menu until the TEMPERATURE icon on the display is shown The letters F or C will be blinking indicating the selection 2 Press either the or W button to toggle between F or C 3 Exit the Menu Note Once the radio is tumed on please allow tin for an accurate tenperature reading to be collected Countdown Timer Feature Your radio has a countdown timer which can be set from5 minutes to 3 hours in 5 minute increases When the tiner is running the ALARM icon is shown on the display The icons around the display provide a visual indication of how much tine is rermeining on the tiner To set the countdown tinrer 1 Enter the Menu Advance through the menu until the ALARM icon on the display is shown The current timer setting will be flashing on the display Note When zero 0
7. is displayed the timer is Off 2 Press either the or W button to change the setting to the desired count 3 Exit the Menu The tiner will begin counting down intrediately Note If Vibrate Alert is enabled or Key Beep Tones are tumed off the radio will vibrate when the countdown tiner expires Auto Squelch Feature The FRS440 radio is equipped with an automatic squelch system which shuts off weak transmissions and unwanted noise due to terrain conditions or if you have reached your range limit To tenporarily disable the Auto Squelch and monitor the selected channel rapidly press the PTT button twice Press any key to exit channel monitor mode The channel will remain open until the PTT button is pressed To re engage the Auto Squelch repeat the double PTT key press Automatic Power Save Feature Your radio has a unique circuit designed to drarratically extend the life of the batteries If there is no transmission within 5 seconds your radio switches to the Power Save mode The radio is still able to receive transmissions in this node LCD Backlight The LCD baddight will automatically tum on with any key press The LCD display will illuminate for 5 seconds before tuming off USING THE WEATHER RADIO Your FRS440 radio can receive weather broadcasts fromthe NOAA National Weather Service While using the VWeatther Radio you are not able to receive FRS communications unless you press the PTT or call menu button whic
8. ons found with the NiMH accessory 5 Replace the battery compartment door by pushing it up until it is secure RECOMMENDED BATTERY LEVEL AND LOW BATTERY ALERT This unit has a battery leva meter on the display to indicate the status of the batteries When the batteries in the unit are low the battery meter will flash and the unit will emt a tone Replace the batteries inmrediately or if you are using the optional NiMH battery pads you must recharge the baitteries in order to continue using the radio USING THE RADIO In order to get the nost out of your new radio read this reference guide conpletely before attempting to operate the unit Your unit has 3 nodes of operation 1 FRS Radio Mode 2 Weather Radio Mode 3 FM Radio Mode The V eather Radio Mode and FM Radio Mode will be discussed later Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume 1 Rotate the on foff volurre control clockwise to tum the unit on and increase the speaker volurre 2 Rotate the on off volurre control counterdockwise to decrease the speaker volunre and tum the unit off Adjusting the Sound Key Beeps Your radio errits a beep each tine one of the buttons is pressed To tum this sound off press call menu while tuming on the radia To tum this sound on press call menu while tuming on the radio again Choosing a Channel Your radio has 14 channels and 38 CTCSS codes you can use to talk to others In order to speak to sorreone
