Gray background AaBbCc AaBbCc AaBbCc AaBbCc AaBbCc If the amount of background shading becomes unacceptable e Change to a lighter weight paper See Paper Specifications on page 10 3 Check the machine s environment very dry low humidity or high humidity higher than 80 RH conditions can increase the amount of background shading Remove the old toner cartridge and install a new one See Replacing the Toner Cartridge on page 8 4 Toner smear Clean the inside of the machine See Cleaning the Inside on page 8 2 AaBbCc AaBbCc e Check the paper type and quality See Paper AaBhCc Specifications on page 10 3 AC Remove the toner cartridge and install anew one See AaBbCc Replacing the Toner Cartridge on page 8 4 Vertical If marks repeatedly appear on the printed side of the repetitive page at even intervals defects e The toner cartridge may be damaged If a repetitive mark occurs on the page print a cleaning sheet several AaBbCc times to clean the cartridge see Cleaning the Drum AaBbCc on page 8 5 After the printout if you still have the a same problems remove the toner cartridge and install a new one See Replacing the Toner Cartridge on page 8 4 Parts of the machine may have toner on them Ifthe defects occur on the back of the page the problem will likely correct itself after a few more pages The fusing assembly may be damaged Contact a

NOTE You may experience jams when using print materials with a length of less than 5 in 127 mm For optimum i performance ensure that you are storing and handling the paper correctly Please refer to Paper Storage Environment on page 10 5 I l I Paper Specifications The paper storage environment should be properly maintained to ensure optimum performance The required condition is 20 Category Specifications to 24 C 68 to 75 F with a relative humidity of 45 to 55 The following guidelines should be considered when Acid content 5 5 pH or lower evaluating the paper s storage environment Caliper 3 0 7 0 mils 0 094 0 18 mm e Paper should be stored at or near room temperature e The air should not be too dry or too humid Curl in ream Flat within 0 02 in 5 mm T e The best way to store an opened ream of paper is to Cut edge conditions Cut with sharp blades with no visible fray rewrap it tightly in its moisture proof wrapping If the machine environment is subject to extremes unwrap Must not scorch melt offset or release hazardous only the amount of paper to be used during the day s Fusing compatibility emissions when heated to 200 C 392 F for 0 1 operation to prevent unwanted moisture changes second Env Grain Long grain elopes VOTE Envelope construction is critical Envelope fold lines can vary Moisture content 4 6 9o by weight considerably not only

7. e Setting the Favorite Copy Option 4 1 Copying Making Copies on the Document Glass 1 Lift and open the document cover 2 Place the document face down on the document glass and align it at the top left corner of the glass 5 If necessary you can use special copy features such as Poster Auto Fit Clone and ID Card copying 6 Press Start to begin copying The display shows the copy processing NOTES e You can cancel the copy job during an operation Press Stop Clear and the copying will stop e Dust on the document glass may cause black spots on the printout Always keep it clean To get the best scan quality especially for colored or gray scaled images use the document glass NOTE Make sure that no documents are in the ADF Automatic Document Feeder If a document is detected in the ADF the machine gives it priority over the document on the document glass 3 Close the document cover NOTES e When you close the document cover please be careful of any injuries Leaving the cover open while copying may affect copy quality and toner consumption e If you are copying a page from a book or magazine start copying with the cover open 4 Customize the copy settings including number of copies copy size darkness and original type by using the control panel buttons See Setting Copy Options on page 4 3 To clear the settings use the Stop Clear button 4
8. 3 After the installation is finished a window asking you to print a test page appears If you choose to print a test page select the checkbox and click Next Otherwise just click Next and skip to step 5 NOTE If your printer is not connected to the computer the window asking you to print a test page will not appear 4 If the test page prints out correctly click Yes If not click No to reprint it 5 5 To register yourself as a user of Samsung Printers in order to receive information from Samsung select the checkbox and click Finish You are now sent to the Samsung web site Otherwise just click Finish On line Registration You will get the opportunity to receive free newsletters with exclusive tips and promotions Also you will get more customer care Would you like to register for the Samsung Printer Membership Finish NOTE If your printer driver doesn t work properly reinstall the printer driver See Reinstalling Printer Software on page 6 Installing Printer Software in Windows Reinstalling Printer Software You can reinstall the software if installation fails 1 Start Windows 2 From the Start menu select Programs or All Programs your printer driver name Maintenance Or place the CD ROM into the CD ROM drive 3 Select Repair You will see a component list so that you can reinstall any item individually NOTE If your printer is not already connect
9. 3 Press Enter to access the menu item 4 Press the scroll button 4 or until the feature you want appears on the display You can select from Clone Copy Collate Auto fit ID Card Copy 2 Up 4 Up and Poster See Using Special Copy Features on page 4 4 for details about each feature 5 Press Enter to make your selection To use the special copy feature quickly press Favorite Copy then you will see the assigned special copy feature on the display Press Enter to start copy job Basic Printing This chapter includes e Printing a Document e Canceling a Print Job 5 1 Basic Printing Printing a Document This machine allows you to print in various Windows applications a Macintosh computer or a Linux system The exact steps for printing a document may vary depending on the application you use For details about printing see Software User s Guide Canceling a Print Job If the print job is waiting in a print queue or print spooler such as the Printer group in Windows delete the job as follows 1 Click the Windows Start button 2 For Windows 98 NT4 0 2000 Me select Settings and then Printers For Windows XP select Printers and Faxes 3 Double click the your printer driver icon 4 From the Document menu select Cancel Printing Windows 98 Me or Cancel Windows NT 4 0 2000 XP NOTE You can also access this window by simply double clicking the printer icon at the bottom right corner of the

Unplug the machine from the AC wall socket and or telephone jack before cleaning Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners Use only a damp cloth for cleaning 6 Donot place the machine on an unstable cart stand or table It may fall causing serious damage 7 Your machine should never be placed on near or over a radiator heater air conditioner or ventilation duct 8 Do not allow anything to rest on the power Do not locate your machine where the cords will be abused by persons walking on them 9 Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords This can diminish performance and may result in the risk of fire or electric shock 10 Do not allow pets to chew on the AC power telephone or PC interface cords 11 Never push objects of any kind into the machine through case or cabinet openings They may touch dangerous voltage points creating a risk of fire or shock Never spill liquid of any kind onto or into the machine 12 Your machine may have a heavy cover for optimal pressure on the document for the best scanning and or faxing usually the flatbed type machine In this case replace the cover after placing document on the scan glass by holding and moving it down slowly until it seats on its location 13 To reduce the risk of electric shock do not disassemble the machine Take it to a qualified service technician when repair work is required Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks

When the last page of your document has been sent successfully the machine beeps and returns to Standby mode When something goes wrong while sending your fax an error message appears on the display For a list of error messages and their meanings see Clearing LCD Error Messages on page 9 4 If you receive an error message press Stop Clear to clear the message and try to send the document again You can set your machine to print a confirmation report automatically each time sending a fax is completed For further details see the MSG Confirm item on MSG Confirm on page 7 2 Automatic Redialing When the number you have dialed is busy or there is no answer when you send a fax the machine automatically redials the number every three minutes up to seven times according to the factory default settings When the display shows Retry Redial press Enter to redial the number without waiting To cancel the automatic redialing press Stop Clear To change the time interval between redials and the number of redial attempts See Redial Term on page 7 2 Faxing Only for SCX 4521F Receiving a Fax About Receiving Modes In Fax mode the machine answers an incoming fax call and immediately goes into the fax reception mode In Tel mode you can receive a fax by pressing On Hook Dial you can hear a fax tone from the sending machine and then pressing Start on the control panel of your machine You can also pick up th

19. service representative If you use inferior quality paper see Cleaning the Drum on page 8 5 9 9 Condition Suggested solutions Background scatter Background scatter results from bits of toner randomly distributed on the printed page e The paper may be too damp Try printing with a different batch of paper Do not open packages of paper until necessary so that the paper does not absorb too much moisture If background scatter occurs on an envelope change the printing layout to avoid printing over areas that have overlapping seams on the reverse side Printing on seams can cause problems If background scatter covers the entire surface area of a printed page adjust the print resolution through your software application or the printer properties Misformed e If characters are improperly formed and producing characters hollow images the paper stock may be too slick Try a different paper See Paper Specifications on AaBbCc page 10 3 A ECC e If characters are improperly formed and producing a AaBbCc wavy effect the scanner unit may need service For AD service contact a service representative Page skew Ensure that the paper is loaded properly e Check the paper type and quality See Paper AaBbCc Specifications on page 10 3 AaBbCc e Ensure that the paper or other material is loaded AaBbCc correctly and the guides are not too tight or too loose AaBbce again
20. the specifications required by the machine See Paper Specifications on page 10 3 The paper keeps jamming There is too much paper in the tray Remove excess paper from the tray If you are printing on special materials use one sheet of paper at a time An incorrect type of paper is being used Use only paper that meets the specifications required by the machine See Paper Specifications on page 10 3 There may be debris inside the machine Open the front door and remove the debris Transparencies stick together in the paper exit Use only transparencies specifically designed for laser printers Remove each transparency as it exits from the machine Envelopes skew or fail to feed correctly Ensure that the paper guides are against both sides of the envelopes Troubleshooting Printing Problems Condition The machine does not print Possible cause The machine is not receiving power Suggested solutions Check the power cord connections Check the power switch and the power source The machine is not selected as the default printer Select your printer as your default printer in your Windows Check the machine for the following e The front door is not closed e Paper is jammed e No paper is loaded e The toner cartridge is not installed After locating the problem clear it e Close the door e Clear the paper jam See Clearing Paper Jams
