3. 4 If the engine oil is below the minimum level mark add sufficient oil of the recom mended type to raise it to the correct lev el NOTE When adding oil be careful not to overfill the engine oil tank the oil level rises faster start ing from the half level portion on the dipstick 5 Insert the dipstick into the oil filler hole and then tighten the oil filler cap CAUTION Make sure that the oil filler cap is securely tightened otherwise oil may seep out when the engine is running 8 7 To change the engine oil with or without oil filter cartridge replacement 1 Engine guard 1 Remove the engine guard by removing the bolts 2 Start the engine warm it up for several minutes and then turn it off 3 Place an oil pan under the engine to col lect the used oil 2 Bolt x 6 4 Remove the crankcase engine oil drain bolt 1 Engine oil tank drain bolt 5 Remove the engine oil tank filler cap and 1 Crankcase engine oil drain bolt the oil tank drain bolt 6 Check the washers for damage and re place if necessary 8 8 NOTE Skip steps 7 8 if the oil filter cartridge is not being replaced 7 Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oil filter wrench 2 Oil filter wrench 1 Oil filter cartridge NOTE An oil filter wrench is available at a nearby Yamaha dealer 1 O ring 8 Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the O ring of the new oil filt

A WARNING POTENTIAL HAZARD Using low flash point solvents or gaso line to clean the air filter element WHAT CAN HAPPEN Low flash point solvents or gasoline can catch fire or explode HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD Use parts cleaning solvent to clean the 1 Unlock 2 Element retaining plate ir filt l t 5 Wash the air filter element gently but pan cetera ai thoroughly in solvent 6 Squeeze the excess solvent out of the air filter element and let it dry CAUTION Do not twist the air filter element when squeezing it 7 Inspect the air filter element and replace it if damaged 1 Frame 2 Air filter element 3 Element retaining plate 8 19 8 Apply Yamaha foam air filter oil or other quality foam air filter oil to the air filter el ement If foam air filter oil is not available engine oil may be used NOTE The air filter element should be wet but not dripping 9 Pull the air filter element over its frame 10 Install the air filter element 1 Hose 11 Install the air filter case cover and be sure to connect the hose 8 20 12 Install the seat NOTE The air filter element should be cleaned every 20 40 hours It should be cleaned and lubri cated more often if the machine is operated in extremely dusty areas Each time air filter ele ment maintenance is performed check the air inlet to the air filter case for obstructions Check the air filter element rubber joint to the carburet

The carburetor is a vital part of the engine and requires very sophisticated adjustment Most adjusting should be left to a Yamaha dealer who has the professional knowledge and ex perience to do so However the idling speed may be performed by the owner as a part of the usual maintenance routine CAUTION The carburetor was set at the Yamaha fac tory after many tests If the settings are disturbed by someone without sufficient technical knowledge poor engine perfor mance and damage may result EBU01143 Idle speed adjustment NOTE A diagnostic tachometer must be used for this procedure 1 Start the engine and warm it up for a few minutes at approximately 1 000 to 2 000 r min Occasionally rev the engine to 4 000 to 5 000 r min The engine is warm when it quickly responds to the throttle Connect the tachometer to the spark plug lead and then set the idle to the specified idling speed by adjusting the throttle stop screw Turn the screw in direction to increase the engine speed and in direc tion to decrease the engine speed Specified idle speed 1 450 1 550 r min 8 23 1 Throttle stop screw EBU00303 EBU00307 Valve clearance adjustment Throttle lever adjustment The correct valve clearance changes with use resulting in improper fuel air supply or engine noise To prevent this the valve clear ance must be adjusted regularly This adjust ment however should be left to a profession

18. cock to OFF and apply the parking brake 1 Button 2 Lock plate 6 10 EBU01174 Parking on a slope A WARNING POTENTIAL HAZARD Parking on a hill or other incline WHAT CAN HAPPEN The ATV could roll out of control in creasing the chance of an accident HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD Avoid parking on hills or other inclines If you must park on an incline put the machine in low gear apply the parking brake and block the front and rear wheels with rocks or other objects Do not park the ATV at all on hills that are so steep you could not walk up them easily Bring the machine to a stop by applying the brakes in low gear Stop the engine and release the clutch lever With the rear brake applied apply the parking brake and slowly release the brake pedal 6 11 EBU00221 Accessories and loading EBU00222 Accessories Accessories can affect the handling and con trol of your ATV Keep the following in mind when considering an accessory or operating an ATV which has accessories e Choose only accessories designed for your ATV Your Yamaha dealer has a variety of genuine Yamaha accessories Other ac cessories may also be available on the market However it is not possible for Yamaha to test all non Yamaha accesso ries nor have any control over the quality or Suitability of them Choose a genuine Yamaha accessory or one that is equiva lent in design and quality e Accessories should b
19. condition Always follow the inspection and main tenance procedures and schedules de scribed in the Owner s Manual 5 2 EBU01166 Front and rear brakes Brake lever and brake pedal e Check that there is no free play in the brake lever If there is free play have a Yamaha dealer inspect the brake system e Check for correct brake pedal height See page 8 29 If the pedal height is incorrect have a Yamaha dealer adjust it e Check the operation of the lever and pedal They should move smoothly and there should be a firm feeling when the brakes are applied If not have a Yamaha dealer inspect the brake system Brake fluid level Check the brake fluid level Add fluid if neces sary See pages 8 26 8 27 Recommended brake fluid DOT 4 5 3 Brake fluid leakage Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of the pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs Apply the brakes firmly for one minute If there is any leakage have a Yamaha dealer inspect the brake system Brake operation Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out to make sure they are working properly If the brakes do not provide proper braking per formance inspect the brake pads for wear See page 8 25 A WARNING POTENTIAL HAZARD improperly Riding with brakes WHAT CAN HAPPEN You could lose braking ability which could lead to an accident HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD Always check the brakes at the start of every ride Do not ri
20. drive chain The drive chain must be cleaned and lubricat ed at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart otherwise it will quickly wear out especially when riding in dusty or wet areas Service the drive chain as follows a T gt 1 O rings CAUTION The drive chain must be lubricated after washing the ATV or riding in the rain 1 Clean the drive chain with kerosene and a small soft brush CAUTION To prevent damaging the O rings do not clean the drive chain with steam cleaners high pressure washers or inappropriate solvents 2 Wipe the drive chain dry 3 Thoroughly lubricate the drive chain with a special O ring chain lubricant CAUTION Do not use engine oil or any other lubri cants for the drive chain as they may con tain substances that could damage the O rings 8 37 EBU00356 Cable inspection and lubrication A WARNING POTENTIAL HAZARD Damaged control cables WHAT CAN HAPPEN Corrosion can result when the outer covering of control cables becomes damaged Cables can also become frayed or kinked Operation of controls could be restricted which could cause an accident or injury HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD Inspect cables frequently Replace dam aged cables Lubricate the inner cables and the cable ends If the cables do not operate smoothly ask a Yamaha dealer to replace them Recommended lubricant Yamaha chain and cable lube or SAE 10W3
