PIN code The PIN Personal Identity Number code is usually supplied with the SIM card It pro tects your SIM card against unauthorised use When the PIN code request is enabled see page 46 the code is asked each time the phone is switched on If you enter a wrong PIN code three times in succession key in the PUK code and press OK Key in a new PIN code and press OK Key in the new code again and press OK PIN2 code The PIN2 code supplied with some SIM cards is required to access some func tions such as charging unit counters These functions must be supported by your SIM card If you enter a wrong PIN2 code three times in succession follow the same in structions as for the PIN code but this time using the PUK2 code 58 1998 Nokia Mobile Phones All Rights Reserved PUK code The PUK Personal Unblocking Key may be supplied with the SIM card In opposite case contact your service provider for the code The code is reguired to change a blocked PIN code If you enter a wrong PUK code ten times in succession the SIM card cannot be used any more Contact your service pro vider for a new card You cannot change the PUK code If you lose it contact your service provider PUK2 code The PUK2 code supplied with some SIM cards is required to change a blocked PIN2 code If you enter a wrong code ten times in succession you cannot use the functions requiring the PIN2 code Contact your servic

When 1 flashes there is no more space for new messages Use the Erase func tion in the Inbox submenu to make some Space 31 1998 Nokia Mobile Phones All Rights Reserved Voice Messages The voice message service allows you to have an own voice mailbox held by your service provider Reading a text message Inbox Menu 1 1 When you receive a text message gt and the number of new messages followed by message s received will appear and a short tone will be heard see Mes sage alert tones on page 42 Received messages can be viewed in the Inbox submenu With a note of a new message on the display Press Read to read the message im mediately or Exit to view it later To view the message later Once in the Messages menu scroll with or to Inbox and press Select A list of message headers appears Each header contains the sender s name or the start of the message N in front of the header means that the message has not yet been read T in front of the header indicates a delivery report Scroll to the desired message and press Read to view it Use or W to browse through the message and related information such 32 as sender s phone number and recep tion date and time While reading the message you can access the following functions by pressing Options Scroll to the de sired function and press OK Erase Deletes the message Press OK to con firm the operati

11. in a closed car in summer or winter conditions will reduce the ca pacity and lifetime of the battery Always try to keep the battery between 15 C and 25 C 59 F and 77 F A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not work even when the battery is fully charged NiMH batteries performance is parti cularly limited in temperatures below 10 C 14 F Li lon batteries performance is parti cularly limited in temperatures below 0 C 32 F e Do not dispose of batteries in a fire e Batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly Must not be disposed of in municipal waste Access Codes The access codes described in this section help you protect against unauthorised use of your phone and SIM card When asked for any of the access codes key in the proper code and press OK If you make a mistake first delete the digit with Clear and then key in the correct one For changing the codes see page 49 NOTE Avoid using access codes similar to emergency numbers such as 112 to pre vent accidental dialling of the emergency number Security code The security code is supplied with the phone It protects your phone against un authorised use Keep the code secret and in a Safe place separate from the phone See also Security level Menu 4 5 5 on page 49 If you key in an incorrect security code five times in succession the phone will not ac cept the correct code for the next five minutes
12. in the number of the speed dialling location that holds the DIMF sequence this step can be skipped and store the phone number in the internal Phone book See also Speed dialling on page 24 Call the phone number in the normal way Protection Cap of the Antenna Connector At the back of the phone below the an tenna there is a connector for an external antenna 56 1998 Nokia Mobile Phones All Rights Reserved The connector is protected by a rubber cap To attach an external antenna to the phone first remove the cap and then con nect the antenna After removing the external antenna re member to replace the cap NOTE Keep the cap out of small children s reach Using the Batteries Your phone is powered by a rechargeable Li lon or NiMH battery Use only batteries approved by the phone manufacturer and recharge your battery only with the chargers approved by the manufacturer The operation and the lifetime of the bat tery are greatly affected by how you han dle the battery Take good care of the battery and follow the guidelines pre sented below Charging and discharging the battery e A new battery s full performance is achieved only after two or three com plete charge and discharge cycles e The battery can be charged and dis charged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out When the operat ing time talk time and standby time is noticeably shorter than normal it is time to buy a
13. new battery e When a charger is not in use discon nect it from the power source e Do not leave the battery connected to a charger for longer than a week since overcharging may shorten its life e If left unused a fully charged battery will discharge itself over time e For good operation times with NiMH batteries discharge the battery from time to time by leaving your phone switched on until it turns itself off Do not attempt to discharge the battery by any other means e Temperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge allow it to cool down or warm up first Notes for using the batteries e Use the battery only for its intended purpose e Never use any charger or battery which is damaged or worn out e Using the phone near the network s base station consumes less power The operation times are greatly affected e g by the signal strength of the cellu lar network and the parameters set by the network operator e Do not short circuit the battery Acci dental short circuiting can occur when a metallic object coin clip or pen causes direct connection of the and terminals of the battery metal strips on the back of the battery for example when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse 1998 Nokia Mobile Phones All Rights Reserved Short circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connecting object e Leaving the battery in hot or cold plac es such as

15. settings e Once in the Messages menu scroll with or to Message set tings and press Select 33 1998 Nokia Mobile Phones All Rights Reserved Sets and menu numbering A setting group or set is a collection of settings needed for sending text mes sages You can for example send a text message as a fax if Supported by your service pro vider by simply selecting the set in which you have predefined the proper settings for fax transmissions Each set appears in its own submenu One set is stored in the phone If there are any sets on the SIM card these sets are used instead If there is one set only the submenus are numbered as below If there are several sets the submenu numbering will change accordingly Set specific settings Set 1 Menu 1 4 1 Within this submenu you can change the settings of a particular set To access these settings Once in the Message settings submenu scroll with or W to the desired set and press Select NOTE The set can have any name that you can change with the Rename this set function Scroll to one of the following settings and press Select to enter it 1 The total number of sets depends on how many sets your SIM card offers Message centre number Stores the phone number of the message centre needed for sending text messages You obtain this number from your service provider Key in or edit the phone number or recall it from Phone b
