1. NOTE Fuelstabilizer is an acceptable alternative in mini mizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor Do not drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer ENGINE OIL Drain oil with engine warm and replace with clean oil See ENGINE in the Customer Responsibilities section of this manual CYLINDERS e Remove spark plug e Pour 1 ounce 29 ml of oil through spark plug hole into cylinder e Pull starter handle slowly several times to distribute oil e Replace with new spark plug OTHER Do not store gasoline from one season to another e Replace your gasoline can if yourcan starts to rust Rust and or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems e f possible store your unit indoors and cover it to give protection from dust and dirt e Cover your unit with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture Do not use plastic Plastic cannot breathe which allows condensation to form and will cause your unit to rust IMPORTANT NEVER COVERTILLERWHILE ENGINE AND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM TROUBLESHOOTING POINTS PROBLEM CAUSE CORRECTION Will not start Out of fuel 1 Fill fuel tank Engine not CHOKED properly 2 See TO START ENGINE in Oper

With throttle control lever in SLOW position turn idle adjust needle clockwise until engine begins to die then turn out counterclockwise until engine runs roughly Turn needle to a point midway between those two positions With throttle control lever in FAST position turn high speed adjust needle 11 IDLE RPM ADJUSTMENT e With engine at idle speed turn the idle adjust screw slowly counterclockwise until the engine begins to falter e Then raise the engine speed by turning the idle ad just screw clockwise until the engine holds a smooth constant speed ACCELERATION TEST e Move throttle control lever from SLOW to FAST position If engine hesitates or dies turn idle adjust needle out counterclockwise 1 8 turn Repeat test and continue to adjust if necessary until engine ac celerates smoothly High speed stop is factory adjusted Do not adjust or dam age may result IMPORTANT NEVER TAMPER WITH THE ENGINE GOVERNOR WHICHIS FACTORY SET FOR PROPER ENGINE SPEED OVER SPEEDINGTHE ENGINE ABOVETHE FACTORY HIGH SPEED SETTING CAN BE DANGEROUS IF YOU THINK THE ENGINE GOVERNED HIGH SPEED NEEDS ADJUSTING CONTACT YOUR NEAREST AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER WHICH HAS PROPER EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIENCE TO MAKE ANY NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS IDLE SPEED ADJUST SCREW HIGH SPEED ADJUST NEEDLE IDLE ADJUST NEEDLE FIG 11 STORAGE Immediately prepare your tiller for storage at the end of the season o
6. sliding it off of the paper cartridge Wash foam pre cleaner in liquid detergent and water Wrap foam pre cleaner in cloth and squeeze dry Lightly coat foam pre cleaner with clean engine oil Squeeze in towel to remove excess oil Do not satu rate Install foam pre cleaner over paper cartridge Reassemble cover and tighten wing nut securely winenut PAPER CARTRIDGE FOAM PRE CLEANER CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES COOLING SYSTEM See Fig 9 Your engine is air cooled For proper engine performance and long life keep your engine clean Clean air screen frequently using a stiff bristled brush Remove blower housing and clean as necessary Keep cylinder fins free of dirt and chaff MUFFLER Do not operate tiller without muffler Do not tamper with exhaust system Damaged mufflers or spark arresters could create a fire hazard Inspect periodically and replace if necessary If your engine is equipped with a spark arrester screen assembly remove every 50 hours for cleaning and inspection Replace if damaged SPARK PLUG Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each tilling sea son or after every 50 hours of use whichever comes first Spark plug type and gap setting is shown in PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS on page 3 of this manual CLEANING e Clean engine wheels finish etc of all foreign mat ter e Keepfinishedsurfaces and wheels free of all gasoline oil etc e Protect painted surfaces with automotive
7. to wheel weights RETAINER MODEL PLATE TRANSMISSION OIL FILL PLUG ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK ENGINE OIL FILL TUBE FIG 1 e Install two front end weights to the front of the tractor This will aid steering control e Check tractor tires for proper air pressure See your tractor s Owner s Manual e Assemble sleeve hitch to tractor See hitch Owner s Manual 4 e Adjust stabilizer bolts so that ends are about flush with rear of hitch bail Fig 2 Inset Leave nuts loose e Lower hitch assembly and slide hitch yoke of tiller Fig 2 Inset over hitch tube of sleeve hitch so that the hitch pin holes line up e Insert hitch pin until it extends from bottom of hitch yoke Fig 2 Inset Insert retainer spring into hitch pin e Tighten both stabilizer bolts against the hitch yoke until there is no looseness at the hitch point The frame assembly does not swing sideways relative to the hitch bail Fig 2 Be sure the frame assembly is perpendicular square to the centerline direction of travel of the tractor This can be determined by mea suring the distance between the edge of tine shield Fig 2 and the back of the rear tires This distance should be the same on the R H and L H sides within 1 2 inch Securely tighten the nuts on the stabilizer bolts NOTE The stabilizer bolts should be loosened before removing the tiller from the tractor This will make it easier to remove the hitch pin and to line up h

13. ct spark plug wires from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come into TINE CLUTCH ENGINE LEVER TINE CLUTCH LEVER ENGAGED POSITION IIS DISENGAGED POSITION 10 LB HEAVY THUMB PRESSURE SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS ENGINE TO ADJUST CARBURETOR See Fig 11 The carburetor has been preset at the factory and ad justment should not be necessary However minor adjust ments may be required to compensate for differences in fuel temperature altitude or load If the carburetor does need adjustment proceed as follows In general turning the adjust needles in clockwise de creases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a leaner fuel air mixture Turning the adjust needles out coun terclockwise increases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a richer fuel air mixture IMPORTANT DAMAGE TO THE NEEDLES AND THE SEATS IN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF SCREWS ARE TURNED IN TOO TIGHT PRELIMINARY SETTING e Air cleaner assembly must be assembled to the car buretor when making carburetor adjustments e With engine off turn high speed adjust needle in clockwise closing it finger tight and then turn out counterclockwise 1 1 2 turns e Turn idle adjust needle in clockwise closing it finger tight and then out counterclockwise 1 1 4 turns FINAL SETTING e Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes Make final adjustments with engine running and tine clutch control lever in DISENGAGEP position e

15. itch pin holes when installing another attachment If tractor is to be used without a rear attachment the stabilizer bolt should be secured by tightening the nuts Fig 2 Inset TINE SHIELD HITCH YOKE STABILIZER h x BOLT hd Un HITCH PIN HITCH BAIL Y OPERATION IMPORTANT READ THE RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION CAREFULLY BEFORE OPERATING YOUR TILLER ATTACHMENT HOW TO USE YOUR TILLER STOPPING See Fig 3 TINES e Move tine clutch lever to DISENGAGEP position ENGINE e Move engine throttle lever to STOP position e Never use choke to stop engine TO USE CHOKE CONTROL See Fig 3 Inset Use choke control whenever you are starting a cold engine Do not use choke to start a warm engine e To engage choke slowly move lever to desired po sition TO ADJUST TILLING DEPTH See Figs 4 amp 5 The tilling depth is controlled by the gauge wheels and to some extent by the adjustable link sleeve When deeper tilling is required the gauge wheels must be raised Wheels must be lowered for shallower tilling e Remove retainer spring from drilled rivet Adjust gauge wheels up or down as desired and replace rivet and retainer spring NOTE Each hole will raise or lower gauge wheels 1 inch e Tiller can be leveled from front to rear by turning ad justable link sleeve The adjustable link sleeve also controls tilling depth Shortening the adjustable link sleeve and lift links will decrease tilling dep

17. loaded Raise gauge wheels to increase tilling depth If engine seems to be overloaded or stalls out lower gauge wheels for shallower tilling Operate tiller engine at full throttle and operate tractor in slowest forward speed with tractor engine at idle speed or just above idle You will soon learn the proper combination of tilling depth and speed for good tillage Soil conditions will determine how deep tiller can penetrate on the first pass In extremely hard ground several passes may be necessary to till to a depth of 5 inches while in soft ground tiller may penetrate to a depth of 5 inches in the first pass CULTIVATING Set gauge wheels so that tiller will penetrate soil to a depth of 2 to 3 inches Place rivet in the second or third hole from the bottom to attain this depth The tiller engine should be run at full throttle except when cultivating small plants a slower engine speed is necessary to prevent burying the plants OPERATION DO S AND DON TS Always disengage tine clutch lever Fig 3 and stop engine when traveling to or from field garden or when not tilling Lift tiller out of the ground when turning corners Do not put tractor in reverse gear while tiller is in the ground Before leaving tractor seat stop tractor shift tractor to NEUTRAL position throttle down and stop tractor engine set parking brake remove ignition key and then disengage tine clutch lever throttle down and stop tiller engine low

22. th and lengthening will increase tilling depth TO OPERATE TILLER See Fig 3 e Select desired tilling depth e Raise tiller with tractor lift control and disengage tiller clutch control e Starttillerengine See BEFORE STARTING ENGINE in this section of manual e Move tine clutch lever to ENGAGED position Dis engage and engage several times to check the clutch ing action of the belt e Slowly lower tiller with tractor lift control and begin tractor forward movement e Never operate tractor in reverse when tiller is in the ground e To stop tiller and engine disengage tine clutch lever and move throttle lever to STOP position BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL See Fig 1 e The transmission has been filled at the factory e Check transmission oil with the tiller leveled on level ground e Remove oil fill plug Oil should be level with the bottom of tiller plug hole If necessary add oil until it is level with hole CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL See Fig 1 The engine on your tiller has been shipped from the fac tory already filled with summer weight oil e Check engine oil with engine leveled on level ground e Remove dipstick and wipe clean replace wait for a few seconds remove and read oil level If necessary add oil until FULL mark on dipstick is reach Do not overfill e For cold weather operation you should change oil for easier starting See OIL VISCOSITY CHART
23. the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur TO START TILLER ENGINE See Fig 3 CAUTION Keep the tine clutch lever in DISENGAGED position when start ing engine e Make sure spark plug wire is connected to spark plug Move choke control lever to FULL CHOKE position for cold engine start For warm engine start do not use choke control e Move tiller engine throttle to midway between FAST and SLOW positions e Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle rope will pull slightly harder at this point e Pull rope with a rapid continuous full arm stroke Keep a firm grip on starter handle and let rope rewind slowly Do nat let starter handle snap back against starter e When engine starts slowly move choke control on engine 1 2 CHOKE position and then to NO CHOKE position as engine warms up e Move throttle control to desired running position e Allow engine to warm up for a few minutes before engaging tines RETAINER SPRING NOTE If at a high altitude Above 3000 feet or in cold temperatures below 32 F the carburetor fuel mixture may need to be adjusted for best engine performance See TO ADJUST CARBURETOR in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual TILLING The most efficient tillage is obtained when tiller engine is operated at full throttle The sound of tiller engine will tell you when tiller engine is lightly
