1. CAUTION Before lifting or transporting allow tiller engine and muffler to cool Disconnect spark plug wire Drain gasoline from fuel tank AROUND THE YARD e Release the depth stake pin Move the depth stake down to the top hole for transporting the tiller Place depth stake pin in hole of depth stake to lock in posi tion This prevents tines from scuffing the ground e Place shift lever indicator in F forward position for transporting e Hold the drive control bar against the handle to start tiller movement Tines will not turn e Move throttle control to desired speed AROUND TOWN e Disconnect spark plug wire e Drain fuel tank e Transport in upright position to prevent oil leakage BEFORE STARTING ENGINE IMPORTANT BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO ALLOW DIRT TO ENTER THE ENGINE WHEN CHECKING OR ADDING OIL OR FUEL USE CLEAN OIL AND FUEL AND STORE IN APPROVED CLEAN COVERED CONTAINERS USE CLEAN FILL FUNNELS HE ENGINE OIL LEVEL See Fig 12 The engine in your unit has been shipped from the factory already filled with SAE 30 summer weight oil e With engine level clean area around oil filler plug and remove plug e Engine oil should be to point of overflowing when engine is level For approximate capacity see PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS on page 3 of this manual All oil must meet A P I Service Classification SG SL e For cold weather operation you should change oil for easier starting See oil viscos
2. HANDLE ASSEMBLY SHIFT ROD FIG 2 INSTALL HANDLE See Figs 3 4 and 5 e Insert one handle lock with teeth facing outward in gearcase notch Apply grease on smooth side of handle lock to aid in keeping lock in place until handle assembly is lowered into position VIEWED FROM R H SIDE OF TILLER HANDLE ASSEMBLY GEARCASE HANDLE e Grasp handle assembly Hold in up position Be sure handle lock remains in gearcase notch Slide handle assembly into position HANDLE ASSEMBLY UP POSITION FIG 4 e Rotate handle assembly down Insert rear carriage bolt first with bolt head on L H side of tiller and loosely assemble locknut See Fig 5 e Insert pivot bolt in front part of plate and tighten e Cut down remaining corners of carton and lay panels flat e Lower the handle assembly Tighten nut on carriage bolt so handle moves with some resistance This will allow for easier adjustment e Place flat washer on threaded end of handle lock le ver e Insert handle lock lever through handle base and gearcase Screw in handle lock lever just enough to hold lever in place e Insert second handle lock with teeth inward in the slot of the handle base just inside of washer e With handle assembly in lowest position securely tighten handle lock lever by rotating clockwise Leav ing handle assembly in lowest position will make it easier to remove tiller from carton HANDLE LOCK GEARCASE

9. Instructions for additional information Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur TO START ENGINE See Fig 13 When starting engine for the first time or if engine has run out of fuel it will take extra pulls of the recoil starter to move fuel from the tank to the engine e Make sure spark plug wire is properly connected e Move shift lever indicator to N neutral position OPERATION e Place throttle control in FAST position e Move choke control to full CHOKE position e Grasp recoil starter handle with one hand and grasp tiller handle with other hand Pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle rope will pull slightly harder at this point e Pull recoil starter handle quickly Do not let starter handle snap back against starter e If engine fires but does not start move choke control to half choke position Pull recoil starter handle until engine starts e When engine starts slowly move choke control to RUN position as engine warms up NOTE A warm engine requires less choking to start e Move throttle control to desired running position e Allow engine to warm up for a few minutes before engaging tines NOTE If at a high altitude 3000 feet or in cold temperatures below 32 F the carburetor fuel mixture may need to be adjusted for best engine performance See TO ADJUST CARBURETOR in the Servic

14. 15 SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS ENGINE CARBURETOR The carburetor has been preset atthe factory and adjustment should not be necessary However engine performance can be affected by differences in fuel temperature altitude or load If the carburetor does need adjustment contact your nearest authorized service center department e Theair filter must be assembled to the carburetor when running engine e Best carburetor adjustment is obtained when fuel tank is 1 4 full See the adjustment sectin of your engine manual for further instructions ENGINE SPEED The engine speed has been factory set Do not attempt to increase engine speed as it may result in personal injury If you believe the engine is running too fast or too slow take your tiller to an authorized engine service center for repair and adjustment THROTTLE CONTROL If it becomes necessary to adjust or replace the throttle con trol see the adjustment section of your engine manual 16 STORAGE Immediately prepare your tiller for storage at the end of the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or more WARNING Never store the tiller with gasoline in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark Allowthe engine to cool before storing in any enclosure TIEFER Clean entire tiller See CLEANING in the Maintenance section of this manual e Inspect and replace belts if necessary See belt re placement in

23. e and Adjustments section of this manual NOTE If engine does not start see troubleshooting points CHOKE CONTROL SPARK PLUG THROTTLE CONTROL STARTER HANDLE TILLING HINTS CAUTION Until you are accustomed to handling yourtiller start actual field use with throttle in slow position mid way between FAST and IDLE e Tilling is digging into turning over and breaking up packed soil before planting Loose unpacked soil helps root growth Best tilling depth is 4 to 6 10 15 cm A tiller will also clear the soil of unwanted vegetation The decomposition of this vegetable matter enriches the soil Depending on the climate rainfall and wind it may be advisable to till the soil at the end of the growing season to further condition the soil e You will find tilling much easier if you leave a row un tilled between passes Then go back between tilled rows See Fig 14 There are two reasons for doing this First wide turns are much easier to negotiate than about faces Second the tiller won t be pulling itself and you toward the row next to it 10 e Soil conditions are important for proper tilling Tines will not readily penetrate dry hard soil which may contribute to excessive bounce and difficult handling of your tiller Hard soil should be moistened before tilling however extremely wet soil will ball up or clump during tilling Wait until the soil is less wet in order to achieve t

35. ssification SG SL e Be sure tiller is on level surface e Oil will drain more freely when warm e Use a funnel to prevent oil spill on tiller and catch oil in a suitable container e Remove drain plug For easier removal of plug use 7 16 12 Pt socket with extension e Tip tiller forward to drain oil e After oil has drained completely replace oil drain plug and tighten securely e Remove oil filler plug Be careful not to allow dirt to enter the engine e Refill engine with oil See CHECK ENGINE OILLEVEL in the Operation section of this manual 12 FIG 17 AIR CLEANER See the maintenance section of your engine manual MUFFLER Do not operate tiller without muffler Do not tamper with exhaust system Damaged mufflers or spark arresters could create a fire hazard Inspect periodically and replace if necessary If your engine is equipped with a spark arrester screen assembly remove every 50 hours for cleaning and inspection Replace if damaged SPARK PLUG Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each tilling sea son or after every 50 hours of use whichever comes first Spark plug type and gap setting is shown in PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS on page 3 of this manual TRANSMISSION Once a season lubricate the right hand side gear case grease fitting with 1 oz of EP 1 Grease CLEANING Do not clean your tiller when the engine and transmission are hot We do not recommend using pressurized water g
36. structions in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual e Lubricate as shown in the Maintenance section of this manual e Be sure that all nuts bolts and screws are securely fastened Inspect moving parts for damage breakage and wear Replace if necessary e Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces sand lightly before painting ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM IMPORTANT IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUM DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUEL SYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS THE CARBURETOR FUEL FILTER FUEL HOSE OR TANK DURING STORAGE ALSO EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL OR METHANOL CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS TO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING STORAGE ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL SYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE e Drain the fuel tank e Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty e Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur e Use fresh fuel next season NOTE Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in mini mizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor Do not drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer ENGINE OIL D
