2. methyl tertiary butyl ether 15 by volume You may use gasoline containing up to 1596 MTBE by volume METHANOL methyl or wood alcohol 596 by volume You may use gasoline containing up to 596 methanol by volume as long as it also contains cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors to protect the fuel system Gasoline containing more than 5 methanol by volume may cause starting and or performance problems It may also damage metal rubber and plastic parts of your fuel system If you notice any undesirable operating symptoms try another service station or switch to another brand of gasoline Fuel system damage or performance problems resulting from the use of an oxygenated fuel containing more than the percentages of oxygenates mentioned above are not covered under warranty 48 TECHNICAL amp CONSUMER INFORMATION Emission Control System Information Source of Emissions The combustion process produces carbon monoxide oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons Control of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen 15 very important because under certain conditions they react to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way but it is toxic Honda utilizes lean carburetor settings and other systems to reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons The U S and California Clean Air Acts EPA and California regulations require all manufacturers to f

ENGINE SAFETY IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Most accidents with engines can be prevented if you follow all instructions in this manual and on the engine Some of the most common hazards are discussed below along with the best way to protect yourself and others Owner Responsibilities Honda engines are designed to give safe and dependable service if operated according to instructions Read and understand this owner s manual before operating the engine Failure to do so could result in personal injury or equipment damage e Know how to stop the engine quickly and understand the operation of all controls Never permit anyone to operate the engine without proper instructions e Do not allow children to operate the engine Keep children and pets away from the area of operation Refuel With Care Gasoline is extremely flammable and gasoline vapor can explode Refuel outdoors in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped Never smoke near gasoline and keep other flames and sparks away Always store gasoline in an approved container If any fuel is spilled make sure the area is dry before starting the engine Hot Exhaust The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a while after stopping the engine Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot Let the engine cool before storing it indoors e To prevent fire hazards and to provide adequate ventilation for stationary equipment applicatio

Refer to page instructions that apply to the air cleaner and filter service AIR CLEANER BASE SPRING TABS PAPER FILTER ELEMENT SPRING TABS FOAM FILTER ELEMENT CLEAN CHAMBER AIR CLEANER COVER 29 SERVICING YOUR HONDA ENGINE AIR CLEANER SERVICE A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor reducing engine performance If you operate the engine in very dusty areas clean the air filter more often than specified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE page 22 Operating the engine without an air filter or with a damaged air filter will allow dirt to enter the engine causing rapid engine wear This type of damage is not covered by the Distributor s Limited Warranty 1 Release the four spring tabs from the air cleaner cover and remove the cover 2 Remove the foam filter element 3 Remove the paper filter element AIR CLEANER BASE SPRING TABS CLEAN CHAMBER AIR CLEANER COVER 4 Inspect both air filter elements and replace them if they are damaged Alwa eplace the paper filter element at the scheduled interval seejpage 22 30 SERVICING YOUR HONDA ENGINE 5 Clean the air filter elements if they are to be reused Paper filter element Tap the filter element several times on a hard surface to remove dirt or blow compressed air not exceeding 30 psi 207 kPa 2 1 kgf cm through the filter element from the clean side that faces the

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging can cause engine damage Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging is misuse and the Distributor s Limited Warranty does not cover parts damaged by misuse 23 SERVICING YOUR HONDA ENGINE ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position 1 Place the engine on a level surface 2 GXV670 ONLY Start the engine and let it idle for 1 or 2 minutes Stop the engine and wait for 2 or 3 minutes 3 Remove the oil filler cap dipstick and wipe it clean 4 Insert and remove the dipstick without screwing it into the oil filler neck Check the oil level shown on the dipstick 5 lf the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on dipstick fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark see page 28 6 Reinstall the oil filler cap dipstick OIL FILLER CAP DIPSTICK OIL FILLER CAP DIPSTICK UPPER LIMIT LOWER LIMIT Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage 24 SERVICING YOUR HONDA ENGINE ENGINE OIL CHANGE Drain the used oil while the engine is warm Warm oil drains quickly and completely 1 Place a suitable container below the engine to catch the used oil then remove the oil filler cap dipstick and the drain bolt Allow the used oil to drain completely then reinstall the drain bolt and tighten it securely Please dispos

CLOSED Move the throttle lever away from the SLOW position about 1 3 of the way toward the FAST position Some engine applications use an engine mounted throttle control rather than the remote mounted throttle lever shown here Refer to the instructions provided with the equipment powered by this engine for remote control information 16 4 Turn the engine switch to the ON position 5 Operate the starter RECOIL STARTER applicable engine types Pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance then pull briskly Return the starter grip gently SS ee S SS 22 STARTER GRIP Turn the key to the START position and hold it there until the engine Starts the engine fails to start within 5 seconds release the key and wait at least 10 seconds before operating the starter again Using the electric starter for more than 5 seconds at a time will overheat the starter motor and can damage it When the engine starts release the key allowing it to return to the ON position 6 If the choke lever has been moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine gradually move it to the OPEN position as the engine warms up CHOKE LEVER 17 STOPPING THE ENGINE To stop the engine in an emergency simply turn the engine switch to the OFF position Under normal conditions use the following procedure 1 Move the throttle lever to
8. 2 Loosen the carburetor drain screw and drain the carburetor into an approved gasoline container After draining is completed tighten the carburetor drain screw A WARNING Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel e Keep heat sparks and flame away Handle fuel only outdoors e Wipe up spills immediately CARBURETOR 39 HELPFUL TIPS amp SUGGESTIONS Engine Oil 1 Change the engine oil page 25 Engine Cylinder 1 Remove the spark plugs see page 33 2 Pour a tablespoon 5 10 cc of clean engine oil into the cylinders 3 Pull the starter rope several times to distribute the oil in the cylinders 4 Reinstall the spark plugs Storage Preparation If your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapor ignition Select a well ventilated storage area away from any appliance that operates with a flame such as a furnace water heater or clothes dryer Also avoid any area with a spark producing electric motor or where power tools are operated If possible avoid storage areas with high humidity because that promotes rust and corrosion Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank leave the fuel valve in the CLOSED or OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage 40 HELPFUL TIPS amp SUGGESTIONS Position the equipment so the engine
9. engine Never try to brush off dirt brushing will force dirt into the fibers Replace the paper filter element if it is excessively dirty Foam filter element Clean in warm soapy water rinse and allow to dry thoroughly Or clean in nonflammable solvent and allow to dry Do not apply oil to the foam element 6 Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner base and cover using moist rag Be careful to prevent dirt from entering the clean chamber that leads on the carburetor 7 Place the foam air filter element in the air cleaner cover then reinstall the paper air filter element and cover to the air cleaner base Hook four spring tabs securely 31 SERVICING YOUR HONDA ENGINE FUEL FILTER INSPECTION 1 Remove the air cleaner cover and the paper filter elements see page 30 2 Remove the two 6 mm nuts and remove the air cleaner cap from the air cleaner base 3 Remove the two 5 mm special bolts and two 6 mm flange bolts from the air cleaner base and remove the air cleaner base Remove the fuel filter clamped behind the air cleaner base 5 mm SPECIAL FUEL FILTER BOLTS AIR CLEANER CAP PAPER FILTER ELEMENT AIR CLEANER BASE AIR CLEANER COVER 6 mm FLANGE BOLTS 4 Check the fuel filter for water accumulation or sediment If no water or sediment is found reinstall the air cleaner base 27 l ba 52 FUEL FILTER 5782 E d J lt SS e 5 the f

14. ation engine horsepower will decrease about 3 5 for each 1 000 foot 300 meter increase in altitude The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetor modification is made When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation the air fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use Operation at altitudes below 5 000 feet 1 500 meters with a modified carburetor may cause the engine to overheat and result in serious engine damage For use at low altitudes have your servicing dealer return the carburetor to original factory specifications 47 TECHNICAL amp CONSUMER INFORMATION Oxygenated Fuels Some conventional gasolines are being olended with alcohol or an ether compound These gasolines are collectively referred to as oxygenated fuels To meet clean air standards some areas of the United States and Canada use oxygenated fuels to help reduce emissions If you use an oxygenated fuel be sure it is unleaded and meets the minimum octane rating requirement Before using an oxygenated fuel try to confirm the fuel s contents Some states provinces require this information to be posted on the pump The following are the EPA approved percentages of oxygenates ETHANOL ethy or grain alcohol 10 volume You may use gasoline containing up to 10 ethanol by volume Gasoline containing ethanol may be marketed under the name Gasohol MTBE

19. even less if the gasoline was not fresh when you filled the fuel tank 37 HELPFUL TIPS amp SUGGESTIONS The Distributor s Limited Warranty does not cover fuel system damage or engine performance problems resulting from neglected storage preparation You can extend fuel storage life by adding a fuel stabilizer that is formulated for that purpose or you can avoid fuel deterioration problems by draining the fuel tank and carburetor ADDING A FUEL STABILIZER TO EXTEND FUEL STORAGE LIFE When adding a fuel stabilizer fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline If only partially filled air in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline 1 Add fuel stabilizer following the manufacturer s instructions 2 After adding a fuel stabilizer run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to be sure that treated gasoline has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor 3 Stop the engine and if the fuel tank is equipped with a fuel valve move the fuel valve to the CLOSED or OFF position 38 HELPFUL TIPS amp SUGGESTIONS DRAINING THE FUEL TANK AND CARBURETOR 1 Disconnect the fuel line to the engine and drain the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container If the fuel tank is equipped with a valve turn the fuel valve to the OPEN or ON position to enable draining After draining is completed reconnect the fuel line
