Removing Unit From Carton e Remove staples break glue on top flaps or cut tape at carton end and open carton e Remove loose parts if included with unit i e operator s manual etc e Cut along corners lay the carton down flat and remove all packing material e Roll or slide unit out of carton and check carton thoroughly for loose parts Loose Parts in Carton Grass Bag Rear Wheels Hardware Pack Bottle of Oil Hardware Pack Side Discharge Chute Please identify each piece of the hardware pack as shown in Figure 1 Carriage Bolt Wing Nut Group A TT 1 QS Wave Washer OO Flat Washer Shoulder Screw Spring Washer Group B Figure 1 Before Assembly e Before setting up your lawn mower disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and ground against the engine See Figure 2 z Spark Plug Wire Spark Plug Figure 2 NOTE Reference to right or left hand side of the mower is observed from the operating position Setting Up Your Lawn Mower Assembling Handle e Lift up and pull back on the upper handle to raise the handle into the operating position See Figure 3 Make certain the lower handle is seated securely into the handle bracket assemblies Figure 3 e Tighten wing nuts on each side of the handle making sure that the carriage bolts are seated properly into the handle See Figure 4 T

Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely If gasoline is spilled wipe it off the engine and equipment Move unit to another area Wait 5 minutes before starting the engine Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an open flame spark or pilot light as on a water heater space heater furnace clothes dryer or other gas appliances To reduce fire hazard keep mower free of grass leaves or other debris build up Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel soaked debris Allow mower to cool 5 minutes before storing General Service 1 Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide an odorless and deadly gas Before cleaning repairing or inspecting make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness Also visually inspect blade for damage e g bent cracked worn Replace blade with the original equipment manufacture s O E M blade only listed in this manual Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety Your Responsibility Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read understand and follow the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the mach
6. mower even when you are not mulching the grass 1 WARNING Do not remove the mulching The mulching baffle is already in place on the mower for shipping purposes e To remove the mulching baffle lift the rear discharge door on the mower Remove the mulching baffle See Figure 10 EE Rear Mulching Baffle Figure 10 IMPORTANT Make sure cable is routed to the outside of the handle so that it is not in the way when attaching the grass catcher e Lift the rear discharge door on the mower e Place the hooks found on both sides of the grass catcher frame over the chute door pivot rod at the rear of the mower Release the rear discharge door See Figure 11 Discharge Door Grass Catcher Figure 11 e To remove the grass catcher lift the rear discharge door on the mower lift the grass catcher up and off the pivot rod Reinstall the mulching baffle and release the rear discharge door WARNING Never operate the mower unless the hooks on the grass catcher are firmly seated on the chute pivot rod and the rear discharge door rests firmly against the top of the grass catcher Converting To Side Discharge e Lift the rear discharge door and install the mulching baffle See Figure 10 e On the side of the mower lift the mulching plug and slide the two hooks of the side discharge chute under the hinge pin on the mulching plug assembly Lower the side mulching plug See Figure 12 e Do not remove the side mul
7. recommended schedule for lubricating engine components Lubricate Lubricate Figure 16 Lubrication Chart SECTION 8 SERVICING THE MOWER Replacing Rear Flap To remove rear flap cut off the flat end of the wire rod which secures it to the deck See Figure 17 e Attach the new flap and new rod to deck bending the ends of the new rod over to secure to deck Rear Discharge Door Handle Bracket Handle Bracket lt lt Figure 17 Rear Flap Blade Care WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a foreign object Replace when necessary Removing the Blade e Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug e Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are up e Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft See Figure 18 e Remove the blade and the adapter from the crankshaft Blade Adapter Figure 18 Sharpening the Blade e The blade can be sharpened with a file or ona grinding wheel Do not attempt to sharpen the blade while it is still on the mower e Follow the original angle of grind as a guide Make sure that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced

9. are explosive Never fuel the machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running Extinguish cigarettes cigars pipes and other sources of ignition Before Starting Mower e Attach spark plug wire to spark plug Make certain the metal cap on the end of the spark plug wire inside the rubber boot is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug Throttle Speed Your lawn mower engine is equipped with a constant speed throttle which is set at full throttle for best performance Starting Engine A WARNING Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower WARNING Never run engine indoors or in enclosed poorly ventilated areas Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide an odorless and deadly gas WARNING Keep hands feet hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower e Push primer three times Wait about two seconds between each push In cold weather around 55 F or below prime five times Do not prime to restart a warm engine after a short shutdown Standing behind the mower depress the blade control handle and hold it against the upper handle e Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches the start of compression cycle rope will pull slightly harder at this point Let the rope rewind slowly Pull rope with a rapid continuous full arm stroke Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle
10. blade WARNING An unbalanced blade will cause A excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds It may cause damage to the mower and could break causing personal injury Balancing the Blade e The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly It is recommended that the blade always be removed from the adapter when testing for balance Installing the Blade e Before reinstalling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil e Be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked Bottom or with part number facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position e Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft e Place the blade on the adapter Be certain the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges e Place blade bell support on blade Make sure the notches on the blade bell support are aligned with small holes in the blade e Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque 450 in lbs min 600 in lbs max NOTE To ensure safe operation of your mower periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque SECTION 9 OFF SEASON STORAGE Storing Your Lawn Mower The following steps should be taken to prepare your lawn mower for storage e Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrication inst

13. e mounting bracket e Place the hairpin clips in the inner holes in the weld pins and insert the carriage bolts the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket and secure with plastic wing nuts e Reassemble the upper handle to the lower handle e Attach the starter rope as instructed in the Assembly Section f gt Notch Lower Handle O G Figure 14 Operate the mower till the grass bag is full Stop engine completely by releasing the blade control handle Make sure that the unit has come to a complete stop Lift discharge door and pull grass bag up and away from the mower to dispose of the grass clippings Cutting Height Adjustment IMPORTANT All wheels must be placed in the same relative position For rough or uneven lawns move the height adjustment lever to a higher position This will help stop scalping of the grass An adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position provides cutting height adjustment Each adjusting plate has nine height positions Height of cut will change when you move the thumb lever from one position to another Simply depress the lever towards the wheel and move the lever assembly to desired position See Figure 15 Height Adjustment Lever Figure 15 Engine Adjustments Refer to the engine manual for these adjustments SECTION 7 MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN MOWER WARNING Always stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance work or adj
14. emoving the grass catcher or unclogging the chute The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating 13 Never operate mower without proper trail shield discharge cover grass catcher blade control handle or other safety protective devices in place and working Never operate mower with damaged safety devices Failure to do so can result in personal injury 14 Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn Do not touch 15 Only use parts and accessories made by the original equipment manufacturer O E M Failure to do so can result in personal injury 16 If situations occur which are not covered in this manual use care and good judgment Contact your dealer for assistance Call 1 866 840 6483 for the name of your nearest dealer Slope Operation Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents which can result in severe injury Operation on slopes requires extra caution If you feel uneasy ona slope do not mow it Before operating this unit ona slope or hilly area use the slope gauge on page 6 to measure slopes If the slope is greater than 15 degrees do not mow it Do 1 Mow across the face of slopes never up and down Exercise caution when changing direction 2 Watch for holes ruts rocks hidden objects or bumps which can cause you to slip or trip Tall grass ca
15. engine every time e Service foam filter in the air cleaner every 25 hours of use and replace the paper filter component every 100 hours You may have to service the air filter more frequently if you are operating the mower under extremely dusty conditions e Clean the engine periodically Remove dirt and debris with a cloth or brush Clean the spark plug and reset the gap to 030 at least once a season Refer to the engine manual for correct spark plug type e Inspect muffler periodically and replace if necessary Damaged mufflers or spark arresters can create a fire hazard Make sure to avoid muffler and surrounding areas while the mower engine is hot because temperature of these areas of the engine may exceed 150 F Lubrication Refer to the lubrication chart in Figure 16 Blade Control Handle e Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle at least once a season with light oil The blade control must operate freely in both directions Wheels e Lubricate the wheels and bearings if so equipped at least once a season with light oil or engine oil Also if the wheels are removed for any reason lubricate the surface of the axle bolt and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil Rear Discharge Door e Lubricate the torsion spring and the pivot point on each end of the rear discharge door using a light oil This will prevent rusting of the discharge door Engine e Follow the engine manual instructions and
16. ensure uniform cut Recoil Starter The recoil starter is attached to the right upper handle Stand behind the unit and pull the recoil starter rope to start the unit Grass Catcher The grass catcher located at the rear of the mower is used to bag the grass clippings for disposal at another site Once the bag is full it has to be removed from the mower and emptied before any further mowing Mulching Plug Both the mulching baffle and the mulching plug are used only for mulching purposes Instead of collecting grass clippings in a grass catcher this mower has the option of recirculating the clippings back to the lawn Blade Control Handle Rear Cutting Height Adjustment Lever Front Cutting Height Adjustment Lever Figure 13 SECTION 5 OPERATING YOUR LAWN MOWER WARNING Read understand and follow all instructions and warnings on the machine and in this manual before operating A NOTE For shipping purposes your mower is set with the wheels in a low cutting height position For best results raise the cutting position until it is determined which height is best for your lawn See the Adjustment Section for details Gas amp Oil Fill Up e Check oil level and add oil if necessary Follow relevant instructions in the engine manual for this e Service the engine with gasoline as instructed in the engine manual WARNING Use extreme care when A handling gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors
17. g For effective mulching do not cut wet grass New or thick grass may require a narrower cut If the grass has grown in excess of 4 mulching is not recommended Mow using the side discharge to reduce the grass height to 3 25 maximum before mulching Bagging Grass Clippings You can use the grass catcher bag to collect clippings while you are operating the mower e Attach grass catcher following instructions on page 9 of this manual Grass clippings will automatically collect in the bag as you run the mower SECTION 6 MAKING ADJUSTMENTS adjustments without first stopping engine and disconnecting spark plug wire Handle Height Adjustment Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher height position To lower the height proceed as follows T WARNING Do not at any time make any e Remove the starter rope from the rope guide e Remove the upper handle by removing the hand knobs and carriage bolts Lay the upper handle out of the way being careful not to bend or kink the cables e Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on the handle brackets and remove the wing nuts and carriage bolts from the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket Press out on the legs of the lower handle and remove lower handle from the mower e Turn lower handle around so the notch on the bottom of the lower handle is facing forward See Figure 14 e Reassemble placing the bottom holes in the handle over the weld pins in the handl
18. g If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps a Step back from the mower to fully extend your arms b Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing c Pull the mower back slowly no more than half way toward you d Repeat these steps as needed Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs Do not engage the self propelled mechanism on units so equipped while starting engine The blade control handle is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operation Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released Never operate the mower in wet grass Always be sure of your footing A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury If you feel you are losing your footing release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds Mow in daylight or good artificial light walk not run 10 Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives walkways or roads 11 If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally stop the engine and check immediately for the cause Vibration is generally a warning of trouble 12 Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before r
