If you choose to use Push N Connect WPS the security methods supported are WPA PSK and WPA2 PSK WEP with Shared key authentication is not supported by WPS If you install a NETGEAR adapter that supports WPS follow its installation procedures to guide you through establishing a wireless secure connection using WPS The following instructions assume that you are using Push N Connect to configure the router for the first time or the router is in its default state and you are connecting to a WPS capable device For more information on setting up a mixed network of WPS capable and non WPS capable devices see the online User Manual To configure the router and create a secure network connection between router and client 1 Press the Push N Connect button on the front of your router The router WPS button will start to blink e The router will enable WPA WPA2 security with a PSK security password and will create a random SSID e It will then transmit its SSID and security settings to your client device e A message should display on your client device noting the connection status 2 Go to your client device and follow the instructions on your client device networking utility for connecting to the router You have approximately 2 minutes to complete your connection If no connection is detected e The WPS light will cease blinking e Neither the SSID nor the WPA WPA2 security settings will be configured on the rou

7. a Turn the power off and back on to see if the router recovers b Clear the router s configuration to factory defaults This will set the router s IP address to 192 168 1 1 This procedure is explained in Restoring the Default Password and Configuration Settings on page 42 If the error persists you might have a hardware problem and should contact technical support e Internet Light Stays Amber When the router is turned on the Internet light turns amber for about 20 seconds and then turns green If the light does not turn green the router has a problem If the Internet light is still amber 1 minute after turning on power to the router a The Internet is not accessible Confirm that you have the correct internet setting Troubleshooting 33 b Clear the router s configuration to factory defaults This will set the router s IP address to 192 168 1 1 This procedure is explained in Restoring the Default Password and Configuration Settings on page 42 c Turn the power off and back on to see if the router recovers Internet or LAN Port Lights Not On If either the LAN or Internet lights do not light when the Ethernet connection is made check the following Make sure that the Ethernet cable connections are secure at the router and at the computer b Make sure that power is turned on to the connected computer c Be sure you are using Ethernet cables like the cable that was supplied with the wireless router

9. 23 7 Click Apply to save your settings and complete your connection You should now be connected to the Internet Manually Installing Your Router 21 If you do not connect successfully e Review your settings and make sure that you have selected the correct options and typed everything correctly e Contact your ISP to verify that you have the correct configuration information e Read Troubleshooting on page 31 If problems persist register your NETGEAR product and contact NETGEAR Technical Support 22 Manually Installing Your Router Configuring Your Wireless Network This section describes additional configuration and testing for your network after you have performed basic installation of the Wireless N Router For a wireless connection the router and each wireless computer must use the same SSID also called the wireless network name and the same wireless security NETGEAR strongly recommends that you use wireless security A Indoors computers can connect over wireless networks at a range of several hundred feet This can allow others outside of your immediate area to access your network Specifying Wireless Settings The Wireless Settings screen lets you set your wireless network connections specify your network name SSID and set the wireless security option for your router To configure the wireless network you can either manually specify your network name and your wireless security settings s

Firefox You should see the wireless router s Internet status light blink indicating communication to the ISP Using Push N Connect WPS to Configure Your Wireless Network If your wireless clients support Wi Fi Protected Setup WPS you can use this feature to configure the router s SSID and security settings and at the same time connect a wireless client securely and easily to the router computers that will connect wirelessly to the router are clients Look for the amp symbol on your client device WPS will automatically configure the SSID and wireless security settings for the router only if the router is in its default state and transmit these settings to the wireless client at the same time However if the router has already been configured using one of the following methods e Manually and either WPS PSK or WPA2 PSK security has been enabled and an SSID selected or e Push N Connect has been used to configure the router and establish a connection between the router and a client when the router is in its default state 1 For a list of other Wi Fi certified products available from NETGEAR go to http www wi fi org Configuring Your Wireless Network 25 then additional wireless clients can be connected quickly and simply by using the WPS method of connecting to the wireless network In this case the router preserves its existing wireless settings SSID and security and transmits them to the WPS capable client

Resource CD into your Windows PC The CD will automatically start and detect the language you are using on your PC Select a different language option if you prefer gt If the CD does not automatically start browse the CD and double click on N g In the CD s menu click Setup to start the Smart Wizard When the Smart Wizard prompts you about updates click Yes to check for updates for your router or No to update later for more information see Setting Up Your Router for Internet Access on page 19 or the online User Manual Follow the remaining instructions and prompts The Smart Wizard guides you through installing your router connecting your router to the Internet configuring your wireless network settings and selecting the optimum security protection for your network If you choose not to select a security option during installation you can always access the router s user interface later to select a security option see Configuring Your Wireless Network on page 23 J To ensure optimum performance of your high speed wireless router the wireless adapter card for each computer in your network should support the same technology as your router For more information see the online User Manual At the close of installation the Smart Wizard places a Router_Setup html file on your computer s desktop so that you can view the router settings It also places the Router Login N shortcut on

See Connecting Your Wireless Router on page 14 for instructions For more information on WPS functionality and advanced features see the online User Manual Troubleshooting Login Problems If you are unable to log in to the wireless router check the following e 34 If you are using an Ethernet connected computer check the Ethernet connection between the computer and the router as described in Checking Basic Router Functions on page 32 Make sure you are using the correct login information The factory default login name is admin and the password is password Make sure that the Caps Lock is off when entering this information Make sure your computer s IP address is on the same subnet as the router If your are using the recommended addressing scheme your computer s address should be in the range of 192 168 1 2 to 192 168 1 254 Refer to your computer s documentation or see Preparing a Computer for Network Access in Related Documents on page 45 for help with configuring your computer gt If your computer cannot reach a DHCP server some operating systems will assign an IP address in the range 169 254 x x If your IP address is in this range verify that you have a good connection from the computer to the router then restart reboot your computer If your router s IP address has been changed and you don t know the current IP address log into the router at its default IP address of ht
13. is None but NETGEAR strongly recommends that you use wireless security To successfully implement wireless security check each wireless device to determine which wireless security option they support Your wireless router and all wireless devices connected to your wireless router must have the same security For details on the various security options see the User Manual A link to the User Manual is on your Resource CD To set up basic wireless connectivity 1 Log in to the wireless router by entering http www routerlogin net or http www routerlogin com in the address field of your browser Enter the default user name of admin and default password of password Click Enter 2 On the main menu select Wireless Settings to display the Wireless Settings screen which includes your Wireless Network and Security Options settings 3 Select a Wireless Network Name SSID The default SSID is NETGEAR gt The SSID of any wireless adapters must match the SSID you configure in the wireless router If they do not match you will not get a wireless connection 4 Set the Region Select the region where the router is located In the United States the regions is preconfigured by default 5 Select a Channel Usually it is not necessary to change the default channel settings unless you experience interference 6 Leave the wireless Mode set to its default setting By default your Security Options are set to None You c
14. router F as shown in Figure 11 5 Start your network in the correct sequence as described below A Failure to start or restart your network in the correct sequence could prevent you from accessing the Internet To start your network 1 Plug in the power and turn on the broadband cable modem or DSL modem Wait 2 minutes 2 Plug the end of the power adapter cord into the wall or a power strip and insert the other end into the power adapter outlet of your wireless router G shown in Figure 12 3 Make sure that the Power button on the back of your router H is in the power on state The button is depressed when in power on mode Wait 1 minute Manually Installing Your Router 17 Internet Figure 12 4 Turn on your computer It will take several minutes for your router to establish a connection with your computer and your Internet provider For DSL customers if software logs you in to the Internet do not run that mat Software You might need to go to the Internet Explorer Tools menu Internet Options Connections tab and select Never dial a connection Verifying Your Connection Verify that your router is connected correctly by checking the wireless router status lights as illustrated in Figure 13 18 Manually Installing Your Router Power The power light should turn solid green If it does not see Checking Basic Router Functions on page 32 NETGEAR Inte

Internet i Warning Do not install this device on top of any other electrical equipment or install any other equipment on top of this device Keep this device away from any heat sources such as direct sunlight heaters radiators or other A V receivers or devices that emit heat Installing Your Wireless Router To help you set up your router and get on the Internet quickly the Resource CD contains a Smart Wizard The Smart Wizard walks you through the steps required to connect your router modem and PC s configure your wireless settings and enable wireless security for your network When Getting to Know Your Wireless Router you have finished you will be Internet ready If you have a Macintosh or Linux system you need to use the manual installation method see Manually Installing Your Router on page 13 NETGEAR does not recommend or support adding a NETGEAR router behind another router or replacing a gateway with a a NETGEAR router You can set up your wireless router using one of two methods Smart Wizard Setup The Smart Wizard setup is available on your Resource CD See Installing Your Router Using the Smart Wizard on page 9 to use the Smart Wizard This is the easiest option The wizard guides you through the setup process It automates many of the steps and verifies that the steps have been successfully completed Smart Wizard requires a PC running Microsoft Windows
19. an configure your security now see Setting Your SSID and Wireless Security Manually on page 24 or Using Push N Connect WPS to Configure Your Wireless Network on page 25 or you can complete configuring and testing your basic Wireless Settings and then configure security 8 Click Apply to save your changes 24 Configuring Your Wireless Network To set up your computers for wireless connectivity 1 Program the wireless settings of each computer or wireless adapter to have the same SSID wireless network name as the router 2 Check that the wireless adapter on each computer can support the Mode and Security Option that you selected If you have a question see the online User Manual or review the settings you selected previously 3 Check that the Security Settings on each wireless device match the Security Settings of the router For example if you selected a security option requiring a passphrase then the same passphrase must be used for each wireless computer 4 Check that each wireless computer has a wireless link and is able to obtain an IP address by DHCP from the router Fora Windows PC go to the Control Panel and select Network Connections Q Check the Wireless Connections Properties and ensure that TCP IP Properties are set to Obtain an IP address automatically To access the Internet from any computer connected to your wireless router launch a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or

22. d computer s on your Local Area Network LAN NETGEAR Figure 5 4 Getting to Know Your Wireless Router Positioning Your Wireless Router The wireless router lets you access your network from virtually anywhere within the operating range of your wireless network However the operating distance or range of your wireless connection can vary significantly depending on the physical placement of your router For example the thickness and number of walls the wireless signal must pass through might limit the range For best results place your router Near the center of the area where your computers and other devices will operate preferably within line of sight to your wireless devices Accessible to an AC power outlet and near Ethernet cables for wired computers In an elevated location such as a high shelf keeping the number of walls and ceilings between the wireless router and your other devices to a minimum Away from electrical devices which are potential sources of interference such as ceiling fans home security systems microwaves or the base for a cordless phone Away from any large metal surfaces such as a solid metal door or aluminum studs Large expanses of other materials such as glass insulated walls fish tanks mirrors brick and concrete can also affect your wireless signal Failure to follow these guidelines can result in significant performance degradation or an inability to wirelessly connect to the

24. e Internet light is off verify that the Ethernet cable is securely connected between the cable or DSL modem and that both the modem and wireless router are turned on Obtaining an Internet IP Address If your wireless router is unable to access the Internet and your Internet light is amber check the wireless router to see if it is able to get an Internet IP address from your service provider Unless you have a static IP address your wireless router automatically requests an IP address from your service provider To check the Internet IP address from the browser interface 1 Log in to the wireless router Troubleshooting 35 2 Select the Router Status link under the Maintenance heading to check that an IP address is shown for the Internet Port If 0 0 0 0 is shown your wireless router has not obtained an IP address from your service provider If your router is unable to obtain an IP address from the your service provider the problem might be one of the following Your service provider might require a login Ask your service provider whether they require a PPP over Ethernet PPPoE login You might have incorrectly set the service name user name or password See Troubleshooting PPPoE on page 36 Your service provider might check for your computer s host name Assign the computer Host Name of your ISP account to the wireless router on the Basic Settings screen Your service provider might only allow one Ethernet MAC add
