Step2 2 2 Connecting the USB 2 0 Cable or Page 10 2 3 Connnecting the FireWire 400 Cable Page 11 Step 3 3 Formatting and Partitioning Page 13 LaCie Desktop Hard Drive Getting Connected User Manual Page 9 2 1 Turning the Drive On The power supply kit is composed of two cables one cable A connects to the LaCie drive and the other cable B connects to a power outlet such as a wall out let or a surge protector 1 Connect Cable A to your LaCie Drive ra N 2 Connect Cable B to the power supply brick C 3 Connect Cable B to a surge protector or wall outlet 4 Turn on the drive by pushing the power button on the back of the drive See Fig 2 1 B CAUTION Only use the AC adapter supplied with your specific LaCie drive Do not use a power supply from another LaCie drive or another manufacturer Using any other power cable or power supply may cause damage to the device and void your warranty Always remove the AC adapter before transporting your LaCie drive Failure to remove the adapter may result in damage to your drive and will void your warranty TECHNICAL NOTE You may use your LaCie drive when in a foreign country thanks to its 100 240 Volt power supply To be able to use this feature you may need to purchase an appropriate adapter or cord LaCie accepts no responsibility for any damage to the drive resulting from the use of an inappropriate adapter Using an adapter other

USB or FireWire devices and see if the drive s performance improves Windows Vista includes a feature that allows you to disconnect your LaCie hard drive from your computer without using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the task bar This feature works by disabling write caching on the disk which can reduce the per formance of your drive 1 Right click on your LaCie hard drive in and se lect Ps 2 Select the Policies tab 3 Select You should notice an im provement in your drive s performance Follow the instructions in section 2 4 to disconnect your drive from your computer If your drive is connected to a USB 1 1 port or hub this is normal A Hi Speed USB 2 0 device can only operate at Hi Speed USB 2 0 performance levels when it is connected directly to a Hi Speed USB 2 0 port or hub Otherwise the Hi Speed USB 2 0 device will operate at the slower USB 1 1 transfer rates Check to see that the Hi Speed USB 2 0 drivers for both your host bus adapter and device have been installed correctly If in doubt uninstall the drivers and re install them See section 1 2 Minimum System Requirements Ensure that the cable you are using has been properly certified The Hi Speed USB 2 0 cable that was shipped with your LaCie drive has been properly certified and tested to comply with USB standards Not all models include a system fan To determine if your drive has a system fan please see the data sheet for your p

User Manual Page 14 3 1 Formatting for Windows Users The process of formatting a drive on a computer running Windows 2000 Windows XP or Windows Vista consists of two steps 1 installing a signature on CAUTION Following these steps will erase ev erything from the hard drive If you have informa i 4 f tion that you want to protect or continue to use the drive and 2 formatting the drive These steps will back up this information before performing these erase anything that is on the disk 1 Connect the drive to the computer via the interface port 2 Right click My Computer and select Manage 3 From the Computer Management window se lect Disk Management located below the Storage group See Fig 3 1 A 4 If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard window appears click Cancel 5 Windows will list the hard drives that are installed on the system Locate the drive that is represented by the icon Right click the icon and select Initialize Fig 3 1 A stent ney ortor Leute tre 6 In the box to the right that says Unallocated right click and select New Partition 7 On the first page of the New Partition Wizard Welcome to the New Partition click Next See Fig 3 1 B wizard This wizard helps you create a partition on a basic disk H c on ti nu ed on next pag e A basic disk is a physical disk that contains primary partitions extended partitions and logical
9. ca bles FireWire 400 Cable and Cable End iLink DV Cable and Cable End Sold separately R DE a LaCie Desktop Hard Drive User Manual Interface and Data Transfer Information Page 20 4 3 Data Transfers A data transfer is the flow of data that accomplishes a task usually related to moving data from storage to computer RAM or between storage devices During data transfers it s best to wait before launching other applica tions on the same FireWire or USB 2 0 port Anomalies may arise with computers that have FireWire or USB 2 0 controllers that do not conform to OHCI Open Host Controller Interface standards In any other con figurations we cannot ensure 100 correct operation If you experience hanging problems proceed as fol lows 1 Make sure that the FireWire or USB 2 0 cable is connected tightly and securely on both ends of the cable from the drive to the computer If you are using a FireWire or USB 2 0 cable other than the one sup plied with your LaCie drive check that it is certified The cables provided with your LaCie drive are IEEE 1394 and USB 2 0 certified 2 Check that the power supply and ground connection are seated properly 3 Disconnect your computer s FireWire or USB 2 0 cable Wait 30 seconds Reconnect CAUTION Do not connect FireWire or USB cables so that they form a ring of devices There is no need for terminators on FireWire and USB devices so the unused connec

18. e the computer is running To prevent failures however it is important to unmount your drive before switching interfaces See section 2 4 Disconnecting Your LaCie Hard Drive for the unmounting procedure R DE a LaCie Desktop Hard Drive User Manual Formatting and Partitioning Page 13 3 Formatting and Partitioning Once you ve connected your drive and it is recog nized by your operating system Windows 2000 XP Vista or Mac OS 10 x you are ready to format and partition the drive In order to store information on a hard drive it must have a file system and be divided into sections that will contain the data that you wish to store This process is called formattin TECHNICAL NOTE The LaCie Hard Drive is preformatted in HFS optimized for use with Mac OS Windows users will need to reformat the drive See File System Formats below for explana tions of the other possible file formats When a disk is formatted the following things oc cur the operating system erases all of the bookkeeping information on the disk tests the disk to make sure that all of the sectors are reliable marks bad sectors i e those that are scratched and creates internal ad dress tables that it later uses to locate information Your LaCie Hard Drive is preformatted in FAT 32 MS DOS format To reformat your drive follow the in structions in this section You can also divide the hard drive into sections called partitions A partiti
