If the ALARM lamp flashes orange sixteen times Ink may have run out Click Delete Job to cancel the current printing job Click Stop Job to stop the current printing job Click Stop All Jobs to stop all printing jobs Replace the ink cartridge with a new one The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level cannot be correctly detected If you want to continue printing without this function press the RESUME button for at least 5 seconds Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition Error Number 1686 The following ink may have run out i Black The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level cannot be correctly detected If you want to continue printing without this function press the RESUME button for at least 5 seconds Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition Delete Job _ Stop Alljobs Stopjob 30 Routine Maintenance Note Setting of FINE Cartridges If a FINE Cartridge runs out of ink you can print with either Color or

Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not improve by standard Print Head Cleaning try Print Head Deep Cleaning which is a more powerful process Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber Print Head Deep Cleaning consumes more ink than standard Print Head Cleaning so perform this procedure only when necessary Windows 1 Make sure that the printer is on Open the printer properties dialog box Refer to Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box Directly from the Start Menu in Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box Windows of the User s Guide on screen manual Start Print Head Deep Cleaning 1 Click the Maintenance tab 2 Click Deep Cleaning 3 Confirm the displayed message and click Execute Deep Cleaning Unclogs nozzles that cannot be cleared by regular cleaning Deep cleaning consumes much more ink than regular cleaning Execute Deep Cleaning only if the nozzle condition does not improve after regular Note coors After the deep cleaning ends execute Nozzle Check and check whether Clicking Initial Check Items displays the items to be the pint head nozzles have been urclogged checked before deep cleaning 3 Cancel Initial Check Items _ 4 Confirm the displayed message and click OK Print Head Deep Cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts flashing green Do not perform any other operations until Print Head

Black FINE Cartridge only for a while However the same printing quality cannot be expected comparing to printing with both cartridges You should perform the following settings without removing the empty cartridge If the ers Cartridge is removed an error occurs You cannot print regardless of the Ink Cartridge ettings Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities The Black Only setting can be used when you select Plain Paper in Media Type In this case the Borderless Printing setting cannot be enabled If you select Color Only or Black Only when the cartridge runs out of ink remember to return the Ink Cartridge Settings to Both Black and Color after replacing with new one Windows 1 lt Open the Printer Properties dialog box Refer to Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box Directly from the Start Menu in Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box Windows of the User s Guide on screen manual Click the Maintenance tab and then Ink Cartridge Settings Select Color Only when the cartridge runs out of Black ink or select Black Only when the cartridge runs out of Color ink and then click OK Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility dialog box Refer to Opening the Canon IJ Printer Utility Macintosh in the User s Guide on screen manual Make sure that Ink Cartridge Settings is selected in the pop up menu Select Color Only when the cartridge runs out of

Black ink or select Black Only when the cartridge runs out of Color ink and then click Apply Confirm the message then click OK Routine Maintenance 31 E Replacing FINE Cartridges When FINE Cartridges run out of ink replace them using the following steps Important Handling FINE Cartridges Once the protective tape is removed do not touch the electrical contacts or Print Head Nozzles on a FINE Cartridge The printer may not print out properly if you touch it A Electrical Contacts B Print Head Nozzles To maintain optimal printing quality we recommend the use of specified Canon brand FINE Cartridges Refilling ink is not recommended Once you remove a FINE Cartridge replace it immediately Do not leave the printer with FINE Cartridges removed Replace empty cartridges with new ones If you insert FINE Cartridges that has been removed once the printer may not print out properly due to some reasons such as clogging of the nozzles Furthermore with such cartridges the Low Ink Warning may not be displayed properly Once a FINE Cartridge has been installed do not remove it from the printer and leave it out in the open This will cause the FINE Cartridge to dry out and the printer may not operate properly when it is reinstalled To maintain optimal printing quality use a FINE Cartridge within six months of first use Color ink may be consumed even when printing a black and white document or when black and

Cannot Use Do not use the following types of paper Using such paper will not only produce unsatisfactory results but can also cause the printer to jam or malfunction Additionally when printing on A5 or smaller sized paper do not use paper thinner than a post card including plain paper or notepad paper cut to a small size Folded curled or wrinkled paper Damp paper Paper that is too thin weighing less than 64 gsm 17 Ib Paper that is too thick plain paper except for Canon genuine paper weighing more than 105 gsm 28 Ib Picture postcards Postcards affixed with photos or stickers Envelopes with double flaps Envelopes with sticker flaps Envelopes with an embossed or treated surface Envelopes with pressure seals Any type of paper with holes Paper that is not rectangular Paper bound with staples or glue Paper with adhesives Paper decorated with glitter etc Before Printing E Loading Paper Important When performing duplex printing pay great attention to the dust and stain on the area desk etc where the printed paper is ejected Printing with dust and stain remaining on this area can have a bad effect on the printing result and printer If you cut plain paper to 4 x 6 101 6 x 152 4 mm 5 x 7 127 0 x 177 8 mm or 2 13 x 3 39 54 0 x 86 0 mm credit card size for a trial print it can cause paper jams You cannot print on postcards affixed with photos or stickers Always load paper in

Does Not Come Out Printing Does Not Start Printing Is Blurred Colors Are Wrong Straight Lines Are Misaligned FINE Cartridge is not installed properly Remove the FINE Cartridge then reinstall it There is no ink left Small dusts may be stuck between the contact points In this case the print result may be improved by reinstalling the FINE Cartridge x 2 N A X E A Media Type setting in the printer driver Make sure that the Media Type set in the Main sheet of the printer driver does not match the actual type of Windows or the Quality amp Media in the pop up menu of the Print dialog box paper Macintosh matches the type of the loaded printing paper 44 Troubleshooting Print Head nozzles are clogged Print the nozzle check pattern to check for uneven ink output If the nozzle check pattern does not print out properly Clean the Print Head and then print the nozzle check pattern to check that ink is ejecting properly If the problem is not resolved after performing Print Head Cleaning twice Perform Print Head Deep Cleaning If the problem is not resolved after performing Print Head Deep Cleaning perform Print Head Deep Cleaning again If the problem is still not resolved after performing Print Head Deep Cleaning twice A FINE Cartridge may have run out of ink Replace it with a new one For details on how to print the nozzle check pattern how to clean the Print Head and how to perform Print Head Dee

15. not feed Reload paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder and press the RESUME CANCEL button Three flashes Paper jam The paper may be jammed Remove the jammed paper reload paper properly in the printer and then press the RESUME CANCEL button See Paper Jams on page 49 Four Flashes Ink has run out Ink has run out Replace the ink cartridge and close the cover If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing press the RESUME button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed Then printing can continue under the ink out condition The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing The resulting print quality is not satisfactory if printing is continued under the ink out condition Five flashes The FINE Cartridge cannot be recognized Possible causes are as follows The FINE Cartridge may not be installed properly The FINE Cartridge may not be compatible with this printer Install the appropriate FINE Cartridge If lines are misaligned or the resulting output is not satisfactory carry out the Print Head Alignment Seven Flashes FINE Cartridge is not installed in the correct position Confirm that the FINE Cartridges are installed in the appropriate positions See Replacing a FINE Cartridge on page 26 Eight flashes Ink absorber is almost full The printer has a built in ink abs
16. roller with applying a slightly moisten cotton swab with water to wipe off dust or stain If the problem still persists contact a Canon service representative E Cleaning the Inside of the Printer If the printed paper is smudged the inside of the printer may be dirty To always get best quality printing result periodical cleaning of the inside of the printer is recommended You can clean this part in two ways See Cleaning the Bottom Plate Bottom Plate Cleaning on page 38 See Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Printer on page 40 Important When using Photo Paper Plus Double Sided PP 101D be sure to clean the inside of the printer before printing Cleaning the Bottom Plate Bottom Plate Cleaning This section describes how to clean the inside of the printer If the inside of the printer becomes dirty printed paper may get dirty so we recommend performing cleaning regularly Windows d Make sure that the printer is turned on and then remove any paper from the Auto Sheet Feeder 2 Folda single sheet of A4 or Letter sized plain paper in half widthwise and then unfold the paper 3 Load this and only this sheet of paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder with the open side to the front Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left For details on the Paper Thickness Lever refer to Front View in Main Components of the User s Guide on screen manual We 1 Load the paper after unfold
