2. 15 10 Appendix A Wiring Diagrams nn 16 Page 3 of 16 2009 Dearborn Group Technology DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual 1 Safety First It is essential that the user read this document carefully before using the hardware The PLC TestCon device is to be used by those trained in the troubleshooting and diagnostics of light duty through heavy duty vehicles and trailers The user is assumed to have a very good understanding of the electronic systems contained on the vehicles and the potential hazards related to working in a shop floor environment Dearborn Group Technology understands that there are numerous safety hazards that cannot be foreseen so we recommend that the user read and follow all safety messages in this manual on all of your shop equipment from your vehicle manuals as well as internal shop documents and operating procedures STOP Always block drive steer and trailer wheels both front and back when testing Use extreme caution when working around electricity When diagnosing any vehicle there is the risk of electric shock both from battery level voltage vehicle voltages and from building voltage Do not smoke or allow sparks or open flames near any part of the vehicle fueling system or vehicle batteries Always work in an adequately ventilated area and route vehicle exhaust outdoors a Do not use this product in an environment where fuel fuel
3. of 16 2009 Dearborn Group Technology DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual 6 Troubleshooting Your PLC TestCon and ABS OEM Software If your trailer ABS OEM diagnostic programs are having problems communicating with the trailer ABS system read the following troubleshooting steps Please download the Dearborn Group Adapter Validation Tool AVT from the DG website www dgtech com download php under DPA 4 Plus as it will be needed These examples will assume that you are using a Dearborn Protocol Adapter DPA 4 Plus as your J1708 J1587 VDA There are typically four problem areas with VDA devices Each problem is discussed in following sections 1 P oO D Connection related unable to communicate with the adapter vehicle or both Inability to select the adapter in your OEM diagnostic application Problems re flashing reprogramming with the J1939 protocol USB Issues 6 1 Connection Related Issues After you have installed the DPA drivers and connected the DPA 4 Plus to both the PC and trailer make sure that the DPA Power LED is lit Then configure your ABS OEM diagnostic program to use the DPA 4 Plus Should the DPA 4 Plus not work with the OEM software run the DG Adapter Validation Tool AVT to ensure that the PC is able to communicate with the DPA and that the DPA is able to see vehicle data bus traffic Windows Vista Users When the Adapter Validation Tool software is launched you will be told

5. vapor exhaust fumes or other potentially hazardous liquids solids or gas vapors could collect and or possibly ignite such as in an unventilated area or other confined space including below ground areas Page 4 of 16 2009 Dearborn Group Technology DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual 2 Introducing the PLC TestCon The PLC TestCon product can be used in Standalone Mode to quickly test PLC4TRUCKS compatible tractors and trailers The PLC TestCon can also be used in Diagnostic Mode in conjunction with an RP1210 compliant J1708 vehicle datalink adapter VDA and a PC to run trailer ABS OEM PC diagnostics applications The PLC TestCon kit should include the following items both items can be purchased separately Q PLC TestCon Diagnostic Tool with a 6 DB15 male pigtail connector a Six foot cord with red 12V and black GND banana plugs connected to alligator clips on one end and a DB15 male connector on the other PLC TestCon and DB15 to banana plugs alligator clips cable Page 5 of 16 2009 Dearborn Group Technology DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual 3 Standalone Test Modes The PLC TestCon can be used by itself to quickly determine if a trailer ABS system has a fault or test a tractor s ability to light the Trailer ABS Fault Lamp on the dashboard The PLC TestCon behaves in two different ways depending on the membrane Mode Switch on the front lab

10. ailer Mode Tests a Tractor s Ability to Light the Trailer ABS Fault Lamp Trailer Mode is used to check if a PLC compliant tractor is capable of lighting the Trailer ABS Fault Lamp on the dashboard The membrane Mode Switch on the front of the PLC TestCon or grounding DB15 pin 4 is used to go into Trailer Mode When in this mode and connected to power ground points in the cab the in cab Trailer ABS Fault Lamp will cycle on off in roughly a 5 second interval To exit this mode press the Mode Switch or remove ground from DB15 pin 4 There is a Trailer Mode LED on the front panel to indicate that this mode is active The PLC TestCon stays in Trailer Mode until the membrane Mode Switch is pressed or DB15 pin 4 is un grounded which puts the PLC TestCon into Tractor Mode 3 2 1 Quick Tractor ABS In Dash Fault Lamp Test Tractor Go No Go Test This section refers to the Quick Tractor ABS In Dash Fault Lamp Test paragraph on the PLC TestCon Q Ensure that the vehicle tractor ignition switch is turned on and connect the PLC TestCon to power and ground somewhere in the cab This can easily be accomplished with the aforementioned DB15 to banana plugs alligator clips cable by removing the alligator clips and placing the banana plugs into the CB receptacles You can also use a 6 or 9 pin truck diagnostic cable and connect to the tractor diagnostic port a The Power LED should light then press the Mode Switch so that the Trailer Mode LED comes on and

18. ni file for errors gt Click the Fix INI File Make This Vendor First In List button which can fix a potentially mangled INI file If these steps don t work contact your APPLICATION PROVIDER HELP DESK Page 11 of 16 2009 Dearborn Group Technology DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual 6 2 Not Seeing DPA 4 Plus in OEM Application VDA Selection List If you have installed the DPA 4 Plus drivers and your diagnostic application does not display DG DPA 4 4 Plus USB in their VDA selection dialog box this could indicate one of three things about the diagnostic application Most oftentimes item 3 is the main culprit and has been causing problems for several years 1 Application is not RP1210A compliant and does not work with the DPA 4 Plus a Some applications require a specific proprietary adapter 2 Application is RP1210A compliant but DPA does not support the protocol needed a For example 1509141 in the RP1210 layer 3 Problem with the main RP1210 INI file typically C Windows RP121032 INI a Some VDAs create issues with the RP121032 INI file when they install uninstall b You will be notified by a dialog box when you run AVT if there is a problem If so you should fix the problem On Windows Vista you will be required to have administrator privileges The AVT application has a button Fix Change RP121032 INI File that will allow you to view and fix the RP121032 INI file if there are e
