BRK  oe  at F  k H yi i     x Wier h Pe J   Ba a    To avoid injury  read user s manual before using        Pt ae Se  FS  _ mm A      a j  iN            leading bed evolution    Joerns   Bed Frames  39  and 42  CareWide Extension    Important Precautions       Warning  Possible Injury Or Death  Joerns    CareWide Extension Kit is designed specifically for the  Joerns EasyCare and Care 100 model beds  Use of  this product on any bed for which it was not designed  could result in an unproven or unsafe configuration   potentially resulting in serious injury or death  For  questions regarding compatibility  contact your Joerns  representative        Warning  Possible Injury Or Death  Use a properly  sized mattress in order to minimize the gap between  the side of the mattress and the assist device rail   This gap must be small enough to prevent a resident  from getting his her head or neck caught in this  location  Make sure that raising or lowering the bed   or contouring the mattress support platform does not  create hazardous gaps  Failure to do so could result in  serious injury or death        Warning  Possible Injury Or Death  Bed safe  working load is 500 pounds  This is total weight  counting resident patient  mattress  bedding   accessories and any other equipment or persons likely  to be on bed  Do not exceed 500 pound safe working  load  Exceeding the safe working load could result in  property damage  injury or death        Warning  Possible Shock Hazar
2.    4  Locate the detent pins  Each extension requires  two detent pins  Insert pins through the slot in the  bracket and then through the hole  Figure 2      A  Warning  Ensure that each pin is properly seated   Figure 3      Figure 2    Figure 3       Joerns   Bed Frames  39  and 42  CareWide Extension    5  Once the extensions are fully assembled  you will  need to install the mattress stops provided with the  extension kit     Note  If this is an extension replacement service kit   no mattress stops were provided  Use the existing  mattress stops that were included in the original kit     6  Install the mattress stops on the Head and Foot  ends of the mattress support platform  Aligning  the stop as shown in Figure 4 will ensure that the  mattress stop will engage the inside of the mattress  support platform as shown    7  You will then need to press the sides of the    mattress stop inward to allow clearance past the  sides of the mattress support platform  Figure 5      8  Lower the stop  Once the mattress stop has come  to rest on the top of the mattress support platform   Figure 6   allow the stop to take its place around  the tubes of the mattress support platform as  shown in Figures 6a and 6b    9  Replace standard width panels with wide panels        Warning  Use properly sized head foot panels when  used with assist devices to prevent entrapment issues     Note  Figures 4  5  and 6 depict the mattress stop for  the 39  extensions  Location for the mattress stop is

4.  to its lowest positions     This CareWide Extension Kit is only one part of your  healthcare bed system  Proper combinations of   bed  mattress  head foot panels  and assist devices  are needed to minimize the risk of entrapment  For  more information  contact your Joerns Healthcare  representative     Bed System Entrapment Information    In April 1999  the U S  Food and Drug Administration   FDA  in partnership with representatives from the  hospital and post acute bed industry  including  Joerns Healthcare  national healthcare organizations   resident advocacy groups  and other federal agencies  formed the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup  HBSW    The workgroup   s goal is to improve the safety of   bed frames for residents and patients in all health  care settings who are most vulnerable to the risk of  entrapment  The efforts of the FDA and the HBSW  culminated in the FDA s release of recommended  guidelines intended to reduce the risk of entrapment   including dimensional limits for critical gaps and  spaces between bed system components and clinical  guidance for assessment and implementation of bed  side rails in various health care settings     Joerns   Bed Frames  39  and 42  CareWide Extension    Entrapment zones involve the relationship of  bed components often directly assembled by the  healthcare facility rather than the manufacturer   Therefore  compliance is the responsibility of  the facility     As the leading manufacturer of long term care beds  and a frontrun
