145. o some Photoshop style effects without using Photoshop Looks like Adobe agreed with the concept because they too provide the same support in CS3 While I agree that good software doesn t need to do everything there are times I don t want to switch to Photoshop or a graphics package to add shadows and inner or outer glow effects and now that is possible The second thing I liked about InDesign CS3 was the improved UI Now don t get me wrong I like the layout in CS2 The CS3 layout lets you create custom workspaces so you can have different organization for different products or for other people that share your computer And the control panel is improved as well Customize the panel and menus to show fewer or preferred options which helps when working on that tiny laptop or a crowded 20 1Mac screen Adobe also enhanced table support It is now easy to apply styles to tables and cells so any global changes affect all the tables So much for spending a lot of time manually reformatting every table when some creative genius on your project decides to change a font or spacing right before sending the file to the printer I don t believe I m the only that had that happen And for those people that compose in Word and bring it into InDesign but forget to add those pesky symbols like and in Word Adobe has a Glyphs panel to make that task simple within InDesign Something else I liked the page panel shows document previ
146. ooking for Perhaps it s a sort of way to integrate the bits and pieces of information to enable me to produce a template or three that I could use to create a technical document without having to worry about individual styles or the formatting of the pieces Perhaps I m in the wrong book It s not that I m not intrigued by master documents or collaborative writing or editing However what I really want to know is how to write a long document based on creating a style that works for or a longish technical report The style should be intuitive all the aspects of style and document origination should both self consistent and easy to implement Now the book has sections on creating TOC and Indices and working with links It also discusses headers footers and bibliographic citations at great length There is a lot of good information about creating Tables inserting graphics and the like But the book requires me to work too hard at integrating the pieces Shame on you Another Graphics Issues In a number of places no I did not make a list a graphic seemed either out of place or could not be tied to the associated text This seems more loosey goosey than the other Missing Manuals A Kudo for the Publisher Chapter 2 Entering and Editing Text When I checked the Typing in Word Selecting Text 9 publisher s web site I Content preview Buy reprint rights for this chapter found a great deal of useful book related materi
147. op and Illustrator formatted images into Fireworks and almost always keep the layers intact In fact Adobe even made it easier to import Fireworks images into Dreamweaver Now a simple copy and paste is all it takes to move your finished graphic into your Dreamweaver website The next thing that Adobe added was something called Pages It makes Fireworks your first stop for website design You can now quickly mock up a webpage in Fireworks and then save it as a page in a series of designs In addition to designating a master page containing elements that you want to appear on every page you can use Pages to quickly preview your whole website including hyperlinks and rollovers and hotspots all in one Fireworks file What a wonderful and simple idea to streamline your whole website creation process One of the other added features worth checking out is the SlideShow command You can take a folder full of graphics and either through Flash or Adobe s Spry framework create a slideshow that best resembles a photo gallery of graphics I also noticed a Common Library feature that allowed you to store graphics and reusable pieces of graphics in a bin for use on other projects This seemed very similar to what Flash does with it s shared items There s also a new Color palette and a Path Tool for advanced vector work Fireworks CS3 1s still my favorite graphics application Adobe took a good product and have made several improvements The improvements are
