5. 2013 It s that time of year again time to start gearing up for ARRL Field Day June 22 23 2013 ARRL s flagship operating event always held the fourth full weekend in June brings together new and experienced hams for 24 hours of operating fun Field Day packets are now available for download and include the complete rules as well as other reference items such as forms ARRL Section abbreviation list entry submission instructions a Frequently Asked Questions section guidelines for getting bonus points instructions for Get On The Air GOTA stations and a kit for publicizing your event with the local press New for 2013 Stations operating as Class A or B may begin setting up at 0000 UTC on Friday which will be Thursday 8 PM EDT 7 PM CDT 6 PM MDT and 5 PM PDT The groups may start and stop their set up resuming the set up later but may spend only a maximum of 24 hours cumulative time for setting up their sites We have our location secured and we are on our way to planning for our 2013 Field Day If you would like to provide input for events stations food snacks antenna or anything else related to Field Day please drop us a note to fieldday w5Stc org In the DARC Page 7 We will probably discuss a workout during our April or May meeting to test setting up the beam and getting the Communications trailer ready Upcoming Events Need Volunteers to Support Disaster Preparedness Fair 11 am 2 pm

Wo Wine Braised Short Ribs You need a large cast iron dutch oven to prepare this recipe properly I use a 7 25 qt 6 7 L round version The browning step is a bit time consuming but the rest is actually easier than the steps may seem e 3 to 3 1 2 lbs cross cut beef short ribs Kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper 4 strips of bacon or 1 4 Ibs pancetta 2 tbs olive oil 2 medium onions diced 1 celery stalk diced 1 1 2 cups dry red wine 1 large carrots peeled and cut into 1 inch chunks 5 large garlic cloves peeled and rough chopped 1 leek thinly sliced white part 1 dried chili stem and seeds removed chopped 1 14 oz can of whole tomatoes and juice 1 3 cup chopped parsley 1 large basil sprig chopped 1 large thyme sprig 1 bay leaf 1 Season the short ribs well with kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper 2 Heat the large dutch oven over medium heat and render the bacon or pancetta Remove the bacon leave the rendered fat 3 Turn the heat to medium high You may have to brown the ribs in batches Place as many ribs will fit UNCROWDED into the hot fat do not move the ribs until well browned It takes at least 2 to 3 minutes to brown the first side Brown the ribs on all sides again don t move until browned When each rib is browned remove from the pot and place on a plate 4 Add oil to dutch oven on medium heat Add onions and celery and cook until soft 5 Deglaze pot with wine and add the carrots garlic l

14. do the following Go to Channel and make a general call to anyone else who is on that repeater local Go to Channel 2 and have the repeater provide its link information 1 e what repeater or reflector it s linked to if any Go to Channel 3 and have the system provide me an echo test of my radio and audio Go to Channel 4 and unlink from the repeater currently linked to Go to Channel 5 and link to reflector OO1C Go to Channel 6 and link to reflector 003C The 4 symbol indicates a space in this position The B in the eighth character position for Rptl indicates the UHF module in the repeater The G in the eighth character position for Rpt2 indicates that I want to use the repeater s gateway capability The REFOO1 indicates Reflector 001 The C following that indicates I want to use its C module The L indicates I want to establish a link with this reflector Once saved to my D Star radio I can simply go to the channel number observe the entry name to know what it does and establish a link and or communicate One note on good procedure after I establish a link I need to move back to the CQCQCQ channel to avoid repeatedly trying to re link After completing my session I need to go to channel 4 and click the transmit key once to unlink from the linked repeater or reflector That s a quick synopsis of D Star memory allocation and convenience We ll take on

20. mp Rpt2 and the important role they play in communicating via D Star May 2013 In the DARC is the monthly newsletter of the Dallas Amateur Radio Club In this article we ll take a look at managing some to those keys We can manually place the call signs and specifiers in the four registers and communicate effectively But how do we tap into the power of D Star s capabilities without all that finger boning when we want to communicate through a different repeater or to a different reflector Fortunately ICOM has provided memories that allow us to predefine and save many sets of call sign keys These memories can then be selected at will and remove the burden of programming on the fly At this point let me state that I am a strong proponent of a programming cable and computer software to facilitate data entry into your radio Using the cable and either ICOM s software or third party software you can enter a lot of call signs in a short time Manual entry is possible but time consuming and tedious Let s take the example table below I want to use the Plano Amateur Radio Klub s UHF D Star repeater as the hub for my communications for one set of keys The repeater call sign is KS5PRK By default I will select my call sign for the MyCall entry which will not change unless I choose to change it Here are the entries I ll place in the first key set These settings allow me to

23. nsed as an amateur radio operator in June 2009 joined the DARC in September 2009 and has not stopped Katherine 1s always eager to take on new challenges and open to new ideas and does it with not only thoughts but also in actions She said she was not qualified but when approached about a new idea of having a Tech Net on the W5FC repeater She agreed to lead the efforts and put together a team to produce an exciting weekly Tech Net which will be celebrating three years soon Katherine is excited about the amateur radio hobby and what possibilities we can do as a club to teach and spread the enthusiasm of the hobby In the spring of 2012 Katherine wanted to explore what we could do for veterans since many were coming back home Katherine joined together with Don W9VE and started a weekly VetNet in July Working closely with Katherine on many subjects she is eager to go that extra mile to see what we can do to get folks involved She dragged me out one afternoon for a meeting that turned out being a tour of a business because she felt an opportunity for the DARC to expand our name recognition an idea we are still pondering In the DARC Page 3 Katherine also learned and has been a Morse code instructor for our classes Katherine is constantly thinking about the next step and has recently accepted the role of Vice President of the DARC It is with great honor I submit Katherine KESZCM to be the recipient of the Whit and Anne
