3. form in a gas tank adding water to your gasoline which can create even more severe problems If you winterized your bike correctly you will have either drained the fuel or added a fuel stabilizer to the fuel in the tank fuel stabilizers like Sta Bil can extend the life of fuel to a year or more If you did drain your tank take a peek inside for any rust gunk or condensation that could cause problems later Refill your tank with high octane fuel before you start it up to make sure the gas running through the system 15 as fresh as possible With fresh fuel in the tank we can move on to addressing the other most common storage issue dead batter ies Battery Maintenance The most common issue with bikes sitting all winter long tends to be the batteries Every time a battery goes dead its life gets cut down and it only needs to be drained a few times for it to become really problematic Smart riders will have kept their battery on a trickle charger while it was stored but if you forgot this step it s not too late to order one and charge your battery back up for that first ride of the season We recommend getting a smart battery charger that automatically turns itself off so you don t overcharge and damage it like the Battery Tender Smart Charger Junior or the BikeMaster Automatic Battery Charger No matter what charger you pick up it s still a good idea to check your battery fluid levels before hooking it up and top off any low cell
4. a little too fast for his own good last month I forgot to include most of Bob s Safety article So with apologies to all the following is the complete safety update from Bob Spring 15 here the sun s hanging around longer and we know you re itching to get riding But don t hit the road just yet there s a few things you need to do to get your bike back in shape after hibernating all winter Read our guide and make sure your bike 15 as ready to hit the road as you are Spring 15 officially here and it s about time to get riding again If you were able to get all your winterizing done when you were forced to hang up your riding boots for the cold season your bike should be almost ready to ride 1f not getting your bike road ready might take just a bit more effort Either way using our guide it should only take a couple of hours to get your bike in tip top shape for riding season so you don t miss a single day of it when it gets here So here s a quick rundown of the 7 point plan to Winter recovery in order of importance 1 Manual Labor Dust off your trust service manual and skim through it Fuel First Why you shouldn t use fuel that has been sitting Battery Maintenance Lead acid or lithium you probably need a charge Tires Will they be good for the whole season Oil amp Filter Now is a good time to change them The Forgotten Fluids Don t forget your brake fluid and coolant Na t BR Lh Spring Cleaning D

13. ays are getting longer make your bike shine Manual Labor Whether you re still stuck indoors or if riding season has already begun reading your owner s or service man ual can help get you prepared for spring maintenance This Spring Preparation guide will give you some great general pointers on how to be prepared but your manual has all the specifics for your own bike Skim through it after reading our guide to get a feel for what kind of procedures you ll need to do and what kind of tools you might need to order before digging in If you don t have one yet we have hundreds to choose from in our Motorcycle Manuals section Fuel First Stale gasoline is an often forgotten yet very problematic issue with stored vehicles so I recommend address ing your fuel and fuel system first before anything else Gasoline 15 a very refined chemical composition and it actually deteriorates very quickly After a few months the more combustible elements in gasoline will have already begun to evaporate which can cause your bike to run rough or not at all If your bike has a high compression engine like in many sport bikes old fuel will cause even bigger problems Next page June 2015 Puget Sound H O G 2052 Newsletter page 8 In addition while sitting in a tank gasoline can react with oxygen to create varnish deposits in the fuel sys tem which can clog lines filters and Jets or injectors Due to temperature variations condensation can also

16. o go ride Happy amp Safe Riding Bob June 2015 Puget Sound H O G 2052 Newsletter page 11 Do you have a favorite place to ride Want to share with the HOG group Would you like to see different kinds of rides Please let me know so we can make it happen The time to ride is now Thanks Chris June 2015 Puget Sound H O G 2052 Newsletter page 12 It began like so many other weekends Brenda and I getting geared up for a Saturday of vol unteering in some fashion or another for our HOG chapter at Sound Harley Davidson This morning we looked forward to attending the Great Northwest Chapter s General Meeting and introducing and inviting them to our chapters Angel of the Winds Benefit Ride on June 4th Angel of the Winds flyers tucked safely away 1n our saddle bags we headed down the road toward 172nd Then within minutes our pipes were roaring that familiar song as we headed south down the 5 toward Lynnwood No rain the wind in our face light traffic no better way to start any day It wasn t long before we found ourselves pulling into Emerald City We left the house at 0800 early just in case we ran into traffic but found ourselves pulling in early There were maybe five or six bikes there a couple of folks hanging out in the mostly empty parking lot taking off their riding gear Other bikes began pulling in as we stowed our gear and prepared to go in As soon as we go inside I began distributing our Angel of the Wind
17. orth and down high way 97 spent the first night in Goldendale the second day we went through the Dales and spent the night in Lakeview and of course the third day in to Reno The 2 day group went south on I 5 and turned into Oregon spending their first night in Klamath Falls and of course into Reno the 2nd day We spent 2 days in Reno and all of us had a blast We were fed at a BBQ sponsored by the Reno dealership Friday night and on Sat urday Jim Coate put a ride together we went down to Virginia City and toured the ol West town We rolled around Carson City for lunch and back up to the Nugget where many of us were staying On Sunday Jim again put a ride together taking us all the way around Lake Tahoe and again in to Carson City for lunch then back to the Nugget where we had our Sunday evening banquet The HOG group from Reno did us proud It was a fun and good time Monday morning we saddled up with one large group going back up the way the 3 day group rode down Back home Tuesday afternoon led by Rick Johnson across 90 and up 203 to the barn whew I m tired OK next month get ready for a Father s Day Event and BBQ put on by the dealership and HOG cookers on the 13th On the 14th we ll have the 2nd Sunday ride the 21st is OUR PICNIC PLEase PUT THIS DAY ON YOUR CALENDAR Our summer picnic is on Father s day this year so bring the ol man out and show him off And the last day to remember right now 15 the 27th of June when w

19. queeze a few more miles out of a motorcycle tire it ain t worth it When checking tires after storage you should be conscious of potential flat spotting on the tires from sitting for a long time especially on soft compound tires and bringing tire pressure up to spec as air will have un doubtedly seeped out after months of not being used Check the tire wear too it may be a good time to go ahead and replace tires before spring hits so you know you have good rubber for the whole riding season If you do spring for new tires check out our guide on How to Choose Motorcycle Tires for more information Oil and Filter You may have changed your oil as part of your winterizing process but if not it s a good idea to change it before starting a new riding season Every motorcycle is different so you ll need to consult an owner s manual for the exact procedure but it s a good practice to change your oil and filter at the same time the correct filter for your bike can be found easily us ing the fitment tool on our site Here s a handy guide to help with all that messy business Changing your Motorcycle s Oil Forgotten Fluids One of the most neglected things on a motorcycle 15 the brake fluid Even when your bike isn t being used brake fluid is extremely hygroscopic meaning that it has a tendency to absorb moisture straight out of the air brake fluid attracts so much moisture that simply leaving the cap off a bottle overnight can ruin it
20. s New gas vs gas that 1s several months old running old untreated fuel can cause problems in fuel systems The Battery Tender Jr 15 a good quality smart charger for motorcycle batteries If you have a lithium battery which 1s a great upgrade you ll need to treat it a little differently You should still use a trickle charger but you ll need one that 15 lithium battery specific like the Shorai Charge amp Store Battery Management System Lithium batteries are solid state so you don t top off the cells with water either Check out my complete guide on the benefits of lithium batteries for more information The Shorai lithium ion battery uses its own charging system more expensive but well worth the investment If you happen to hook up your battery to a charger and nothing happens chances are that your battery is just too far gone to be revived It s definitely better to find out a few weeks before spring so that you can order a new motorcycle battery without having to delay your first spring ride that we know you re looking forward to so check the battery in advance Continued next page June 2015 Puget Sound H O G 2052 Newsletter page 9 Tires Tires are a part of your bike that should really be checked before every ride only a few square inches of rub ber keeps hundreds of pounds of metal and you in contact with the road at any given time so having tires in good condition is essential Don t be that guy trying to s
21. s flyers on each of the ta bles and on the chairs while Brenda continued mingling with the now growing crowd letting them know we were there to talk about our event Flyers distributed I grabbed a cup of cof fee a scrumptious maple bar and joined Brenda in hobnobbing with the crowd We met Earl the Chapter Director who introduced us to Danielle who offered us the 50 50 tickets Earl the Head Road Captain and editor of their monthly rag Paul and his wife Cheryl their Member ship Officers and Linda the LOH Officer We couldn t have been more impressed by the friendly nature of the Great Northwest members Brenda couldn t have been more impressed with their 50 50 drawing She won Brenda and 1 sat at our table as Earl brought what they call their Social Hour to order About half way through the meeting he graciously introduced Brenda and I We talked about our Angel of the Winds event inviting them all to come join us Continued next page June 2015 Puget Sound H O G 2052 Newsletter page 13 After the meeting was over the Great Northwest chapter gathered on the front porch for their Road Captains safety meeting for their ride to Issaquah that morning Brenda and I hopped on our trusty steeds and headed for Sound to catch the tent sale and then it was up the free way to the North Cascade dealership where they were hosting a BQ to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project At the HOG table we had the opportunity to talk with J D Ste
22. t of fun the Ladies met with Kari and completed the Ladies Ride and Luncheon on Saturday the 9th I wasn t allowed to attend so I can t tell you a whole lot about that But I wished I could have attended I m just sayin that s me sad boy So the next day was the 2nd Sunday ride We rode south following Michael Ross through Granite Falls Robe Menzel Road Lake Roesiger Road through Sultan and Ben Howard Road to the Snohomish el Paraiso Mexican restaurant We filled our tummies and most of us rode back different directions up to Arlington Good job Mike On the 16th the dealership celebrated Military appreciation day It was also the day of the BACA run Over 100 bikes were represented and although not a HOG event we participated in having the BBQ for the riders Intending to serve them on their return from the ride we fed them before they left AND AGAIN when they returned I don t know where Kari kept coming up with Hamburger and Hot Dogs to cook but she came through in shining form as usual Thank you Kari I wasn t here for the 4 th Saturday ride as we were in Reno for the North Meets South ride Soooo saying that let me tell you about that There were two general groups that went to Reno one group leaving Wednesday the 21st taking 3 days to get down to Reno and another group leaving the 22nd ok this isn t too hard taking 2 days to get down there The three day group rode through Leavenw
