6. move the screw if necessary Lift the console and remove the old speedometer from the console Discard the old speedometer but retain the rubber gasket and back clamp for use with the new gauge NOTE Set the console securely on the towel covered fuel tank and take care that it does not fall off during the following operations 9 Set the console securely on the fuel tank 2of3 INSTALLATION AND FINAL CHECK NOTE Apply window cleaning fluid or mild soapy water to the speedometer gasket as needed to aid installation 1 Turn the console over facing upward 2 Place the speedometer gasket into position around the console speedometer bore 3 Fix the new gauge into the bore so that it fits snugly against the rubber gasket Rotate the gauge into approxi mately visual alignment The back clamp will complete the alignment 4 Turn the console over face down 5 Install the back clamp All models except FXSTD Place the back clamp over the back of the gauge aligning the two slots with the console bosses Press the latches down until they lock into position FXSTD Place the back clamp over the back of the gauge aligning the three legs with the console bosses Press the latches down until they lock into position 6 Insert the trip meter reset switch through the hole in the left side of the console retain the harness in the clamp if used and screw on rubber button 7 Carefully insert the 12 terminal connecto
7. o prevent accidental vehicle start up which could cause death or serious injury disconnect negative battery cable before proceeding 00048a WARNING Disconnect negative battery cable first If positive cable should contact ground with negative cable con nected the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion which could result in death or serious injury 00049a 3 Disconnect battery cables negative cable first NOTE Cover the fuel tank with clean shop towels to prevent scratching Damage to the finish could result 4 Remove the instrument console acorn nut and mounting screw with a flat washer on some models Lay clean shop towels on the fuel tank Lift the console from the fuel tank turn it upside down and lay it on the towels NOTE lf necessary bend back the flexible metal clip to free the har ness conduit from the underside of the console 5 Unplug the 12 terminal connector 39B from the back of the speedometer Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion to separate the pin and socket halves D Remove the back clamp All models except FXSTD Gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer FXSTD Depress the three external legs of the lock ring then gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer N Unscrew the trip meter reset button and pull the harness from the clamp re
8. r 39B into the back of the speedometer 8 Turn the console over and center it on the fuel tank For FLHR I Install the acorn nut and tighten to 50 90 in Ibs 5 7 10 2 Nm Install the Phillips screw and flat washer and tighten securely For FXDWG Install the acorn nut and tighten to 80 100 in Ibs 9 0 11 3 Nm For all Softails except FXSTD Install the acorn nut and tighten to 80 100 in lbs 9 0 11 3 Nm For FXSTD Loosely install two T 25 TORX screws and washers into the rear console mounting holes Loosely install a T 27 TORX screw into the front console mounting hole Tighten both rear screws to 30 40 in Ibs 3 4 4 5 Nm Tighten the front screw to 30 40 in Ibs 3 4 4 5 Nm AWARNING Connect positive battery cable first If positive cable should contact ground with negative cable connected the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion which could result in death or serious injury 00068a 9 Connect the battery cables positive cable first J04401 WARNING After installing seat pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position While riding a loose seat can shift causing loss of control which could result in death or serious injury 00070b 10 Install the seat according to the procedure in the applicable Service Manual WARNING Be sure headlamp tail and stop lamp and turn signals are operating properly before riding Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can
9. result in death or serious injury 00478b 11 Turn ignition on and test for proper turn signal brake light and tail light operation 12 Check speedometer and tachometer for proper operation NOTE The odometer on some kits will remain displayed when the ignition is in the OFF position Initialization After installing the new gauge the vehicle should receive a full tank of fuel in order to properly initialize the fuel range miles to empty functionality During consumption of the first full tank of fuel the gauge software will begin the process of learning your riding patterns eventually tailoring the fuel range calculations to your unique riding characteristics NOTE After filling the fuel tank the range function will not update until the vehicle resumes normal speeds Back Lighting Adjustment To adjust color of back lighting Turn Ignition switch to Accessory position 2 Press and hold Trip reset switch until the odometer reads COLOR 3 Release reset switch 4 Click the trip reset switch to scroll through available colors using course adjustment in 20 increments 5 Press and hold to fine tune the color adjustment 6 When desired color is reached the gauge must remain powered and the button released for 5 seconds 7 When the color is set the word COLOR will no longer be displayed in the LCD Gauge automatically reverts back to display mileage Power can then be turned off 8 If color is
